A mining company BHP Billiton launched a hostile bid yesterday for a huge Canadian firm that makes fertilisers. Apparently a forecast has been made for a massive increase in the demand for meat in the Far East and other places as the economy there improves. The fertilisers and pesticides are needed for a big increase in grain production to feed the cattle destined for the dining tables of Beijing and other places. I know grass fed beef needs a lot more space and costs more and will doubtless remain a niche market but this kind of news makes depressing reading.
