Plug for my cousin's kombucha company

    Primal Fuel
I just got back from a family reunion in Minnesota and my cousin, Bryan, brought a case of his kombucha. It is out of this world! We had a long talk about how he makes it and I learned a lot. He's still a small company but has started distributing his kombucha locally around Minneapolis. His company is called Deane's Kombucha (Deane is his middle name).

If you are in that area, I highly recommend you look for it. He lists the places where you can purchase his products on his web site at http://www.deaneskombucha.com/default.html I tried the original, ginger honey and ginger matcha cherry and loved them all. I would have taken some back to MA with us, but the entire case was gone within a day - everyone liked it.

I'm from southern Minnesota, but make it up to the cities all the time. Next time I'm up there, I'll definitely be picking some up from the Seward Co-op!

That's fantastic! I've been toying with the idea of starting a kombucha business in my area. I'd love to learn how he got started.

Diana, he was very open about what he is doing, and it sounds like he has been in contact with several other small kombucha brewers around the country. I wouldn't hesitate to contact him or any other brewers you might come across. I know that he is now renting a commercial kitchen and has hired his first 2 employees. Also, there are some issues that have cropped up (with the FDA?) regarding the alcohol content of kombucha and how it should be classified and sold. It was really fascinating hearing about all that - it's things I would have never thought of.
