All of this martial arts talk is making me jealous. I was just looking into starting classes before I found out I was pregnant. But I'm going to try something out this summer. What would you recommend for a 1st timer, female, in her 20's? I have 0 background, just love watching MMA, wrestling, etc, and think it would be a great way to actually use all the weight lifting I've been doing.

There are so many martial arts out there with different flavours. Sounds like you're interested in the sport variety so if bashing pads is your thing maybe try kickboxing or muay thai, if you like the idea of submission stuff more then BJJ or some form of wrestling - submission/greco roman etc would be great. They're all great sports that work on a comparatively smaller technique variety than some more traditional martial arts, but because they practise fewer techniques more often they tend to make them work better, especially for their sport. Plus they're all great fitness!

Yeah, if you're looking for something like MMA I'd suggest BJJ as well.

@stevew - we do a good deal of knife work in our class. As our Guro says, the only way to learn how to defend against it is to learn how to use it. He taught us 'return to sender' not too long ago. Pretty lethal stuff! Not to mention all the other insane stuff we're learning in that class.

    I grok, therefore I am.

Second Degree black belt in Traditional Tae Kwon Do, and also training in Hapkido and Grappling. At my age (53)it's more about the training, past my prime for competing except maybe in traditional forms. Martial arts can be the best primal training a person can do. I love it.

I can't find a teacher within a 3 hour drive, but when I was in high school, I took Pekiti Tirsia (The art of the flexible weapon.) I really need to find a Jiu Jitsu or Aikido instructor around here, though.

Krav Maga here. I've been interested for a long time but have only been able to start training this (school) year.

I have been doing Tae Kwon Do with some Hapkido and JJ. I have to say I love training at a school that actively promotes mix different forms together. I just started Iaido. It is my first venture into weapons.

I've been taking Wing Chun for a little under two and a half years. Much more under the category of a fighting system than a martial art; some may say this is an issue of semantics, but I disagree.

Was training Shorin Ryu Karate as a kid (age 11 - 18), been wanting to pick it up lately. Alas, noone training that kind of style near by.
