Everything that goes around, comes around. I can remember when the standard weight loss advice, more often delivered by grandmothers than MD's, was ,"Cut out sweets and starches". That was it. In those words. End of discussion. There was almost always a "Diet Plate" on the lunch menu. It consisted of one hamburger patty, grilled plain, with a slice of tomato and on lettuce, a side scoop of cottage cheese, and something like a canned peach half.
SAD to say (heh), but my own parents were caught up in the rage to be modern. I was fed many TV dinners. Yuk.
