Glycine: Protects against diabetes, sugar, cancer, stroke...

    Primal Fuel
    Greetings from Finland!

Some paleosphere bloggers such as Chris Masterjohn and Denise Minger have mentioned that some of the harmful effects of "animal protein" could actually be caused by excess methionine and insufficient glycine. In one study, they discuss, high-dose glycine increase the lifespan of rats by ~30%.

After noticing some of good results with glycine, I decided to systematically check all the relevant research I could find and put it into a blog post. At this point, my glycine summary contains more than 100 scientific references:

Valtsu's - Health Benefits of Glycine

Seems like a miracle nutrient. In the studies, glycine has been able to protect from diabetes, cancer, stroke, fructose, endotoxemia, body fat gain, lead toxicity and many other things...

Good stuff! I now eat around 35 gram of powdered gelatin per day and I suppose there are no reasonable upper limits of glycine ingestion that can harm my health?

I don't take any supplements unless they are whole food (only one right now is fermented cod liver oil ) so how much gelatin would I have to consume daily to achieve a statistically relevant dose per the research discussed on your blog?

I don't know what is the ideal range, but even a few grams daily could provide some benefit. I take 10-15 grams of gelatin every day. I think a few papers reported good results with 10g collagen hydrolysate / day. That would provide 3 grams of glycine.

They used 60 grams of gelatin in a couple of studies conducted before 1950. I think some of them reported an improved ability to do work/exercise etc...
