Red Meat Sits In The Colon For Up to 8-10 Days page

The title was said by one of my brother friends during my last visit to Chicago.

We talked a lot about the primal lifestyle and he seemed quite interested in it all and agreed on a lot of what I said. Thankfully my brother has gained a huge interest.

On Friday the friend, Kevin, enjoyed a large Steak that I believe was corn-fed. I brought some grass-fed beef and my brother, his girlfriend and I enjoyed some hamburger. As we were eating he made the statement...

"red meats sits in the colon for up to 8-10 days."

I honestly do not remember what my response was.

But, I ask for your response - what do you have to say to this? I am guessing that us primal people have nothing to worry about...

my mother keeps telling me things like this...that eating more meat, especially red meat causes colon cancer and things along those lines. i don't know whether it's true or not. i'm not sure where she heard it, but i'm sure (like you said) grass fed vs corn fed makes a difference.

This is kinda like that myth that if you swallow your gum it stay in your stomach for 7 years.

Eat a porkchop on monday, a steak on tuesday, and chicken on wednesday. Next tuesday examine your poop. Whichever kind of meat-poop you squeezed out will tell you how long it took to pass through you.

Note: There may be better methods for determining this, I would be open to suggestions.

I was curious, so did some googling, and most people dissmiss that as myth (on like wikianswer, answerbag, yahooanswer etc). Meat is more constipating than fruits and veg and moves slower, but with other food in there and the consumption isn't excessive, especially primal foods with fibre there shouldn't be a problem?

Does explain why heavy meat eaters produce some abominable smells though as meat does putrify after a while. But lets be honest if is sat there for 8-10days nothing else would be able to get out! And your faeces is only undigestable plant matter or food which has not be digested properly, so as long as your healthy and dont overeat your body will break down all meat.

Wait, this isn't normal? Oh no...

Red meat is completely digested and leaves no residue. It never even gets to the colon.

Too much insoluble fiber can really slow down one's transit time, though, by clogging everything up.
