    brown patches = hormonal issue

common causes of hair loss: hormonal imbalance, rapid weight loss (from almost any method, needed or not, healthy or not), nutritional deficiency, STRESS (any of the previously listed items counts as stress, BTW).

personally, I've had other events in my life (STRESS, nutrient deficiencies from vegan diet, AND rapid weight loss) cause me severe hair loss, but my hair's totally thick & healthy on low carb/high fat.

for you, I don't know if it's specifically about CARBS, per se', but if your body considers it a shock to go low carb, that's a stress. take it easy on yourself.

I've been eating low carb for over a year and VLC since January...with melasma and hair loss I'm thinking PCOS? I also just started testing my morning fasting glucose out of curiosity and was surprised by the readings in the low 100s...figured my blood sugar would be much lower given my low carb lifestyle, no family history, always been of normal weight, etc,

I'm on vacation now so can't get to the gyno for a week...I was on BCP for the past 22 years except for brief breaks when I had my 2 kids...just went off of them in April 2012...except for these two symptoms and some bloating, I feel amazing, tons of energy, great mood, very low stress etc....but am concerns that something is wrong hormonally...

    Hello,

I am new here, but I have great compassion for your hair loss. I have suffered with the same and it started 8-9 years ago. I've seen several doctors and they haven't done anything for me except refer me to the 'hair loss professionals' who just want my money; I've sunk $-thousands. I've asked my doctors to test my thyroid and was found to be normal. When I asked for the in-depth test, I was told, "No. You don't need that." I've tried all the B-vitamins (seriously...in great detail) and I did experience faster hair growth, but no regeneration.

I did discover that sun exposure, Vitamin D, and stress reduction helped me in actually regenerating some hair growth.

I started Primal for well-being and, hopefully, weight loss. As a Primal, I'm not counting on hair regeneration, but I'm curious to see what this lifestyle will do for my hair. So far, I'm happy to say that after 6 weeks of Primal eating, my hair has an amazing shine and is easy to work with. My hair dresser is telling me my hair is much healthier. So, let's see what the next year brings. That's all I can say.

I truly understand what you are going through and I wish you the very best. I will report on any changes and I hope to hear from you, too.

    Best.

I would love to see some in depth research and analysis on Keto hair loss. I have been in keto for 8 months - with a few days off here and there - and I love it, except that I have lost about half of my hair and it is still falling at an alarming rate. The doc did all of the tests and found no problems.
I am a 53 year old woman, quite active, not stressed, taking Biotin, C, D, MCT, Potassium, Magnesium and Omega 3's. If I up my carbs I come out of keto right away, then I become lethargic, have problems suppressing my appetite, and immediately gain 10-20 pounds.
I am currently coming out of keto for 4 days every 2 weeks to eat nutrient rich foods that I don't get while in ketosis - hoping this helps.
Any other tricks or tips or ideas or ....?

the body sees weight loss as stress. stress may cause hair loss. this is NOT unique to keto.

what do you eat on keto that is not nutrient-dense? how many cals are you normally consuming?
As I ate the oysters with their strong taste of the sea and their faint metallic taste that the cold white wine washed away, leaving only the sea taste and the succulent texture, and as I drank their cold liquid from each shell and washed it down with the crisp taste of the wine, I lost the empty feeling and began to be happy and to make plans.

Anyone else notice this? I also noticed that my hair is growing a lot faster (need a haircut every 3-4 weeks instead of usual 8 weeks)...any ideas? Thyroid levels were checked about 4-6 months ago and everything was normal...otherwise I feel amazing but am concerned about my thining hair...

I eat 1-2oz of liverwurst daily and 1 C of bone broth daily. All meat is GF, eggs pastured, veggies organic, etc. I get 8 hours of excellent sleep, low stress, walk 1-1.5 hours daily...calories 1200-1400/day 70-85% fat, 50-60g protein, <20 carbs...love the way I feel so don't want to not be ketogenic...any thoughts?

I had experienced the exact same problem and found a solution. I stay keto, but now once a week I have a carb night. It changes everything!! Here is a link to my story: Eat Carbs at Night To Shed Fat and Build Muscle - Train with Jodi

FAD DIETS will cause you to look sickly.... Thinning hair looks like a cancer patient.
Yet, you're talking about vanity pounds? Seriously, go eat a slice of pizza. Pizzaterians have full heads of hair.

aprimalmomma, you may want to goggle 'vitamin B hair loss'. There are tons of sites that claim a vitamin b deficiency can lead to hair loss.

I know your post is from several years ago, but hoping for response from anyone who sees this. My wife and I are healthiest we have ever been in our lives, won't bore with all the glorious details. Been on primal diet for 8 months now. Literally everything is awesome BUT!!!! We are both losing hair and growing concerned. We are at about 100 carbs a day, eating tons of veggies breakfast lunch and dinner, salads for lunch with salmon or chicken, breakfast, eggs bacon, fruit, and usually eggs loaded with veggies. Getting lots of good fats, coconut oil, olive oil, lots of avacados. no idea on calories but we eat a decent amount of food! Certainly full at each meal. Because both my wife and I are experiencing it together, it is obviously something I'm screwing up on. We take fish oil supplements and probiotics. Anyone figure out what to do?
