Last night the four grandparents were at our dinner table for birthdays. My mom made the comment that this past week she was so hungry for real mashed potatoes made with cream and butter. All the other grandparents oohed and aah-ed over the idea, reminiscing over how they remembered all those good foods from the farm. I chimed in with "I'm regularly making fresh green beans with butter and bacon crumbles this summer." The longing look in their eyes was kinda sad.

I know... I haven't had one since I left OR, so over two and a half years. I think I'll wait about that long again before I try another one. Maybe by then they'll be able to wrap my Spicy Italian in nori.

Who says back fat is a bad thing? Maybe on a hairy guy at the beach, but not on a crab.

Green bans wrapped in bacon pats of butter and some maple syrup drizzled over in the oven until bacon cooked...sends people over the edge that I'll eat it!!

Why can't they have real mashed potatoes? My mom once tried to serve instant mashed potatoes and everyone hated them; after that we were happy to peel potatoes so we could have the real thing. Fortunately my mom never bought margarine, we always had real butter and cream.

I was waiting in line at Walmart. My attention was drawn to the cover photo of a magazine, where there was something wrapped in bacon, and some other things. It looked like a banana wrapped in bacon.

Actually, it was corn on the cob. But now I can't stop thinking about wrapping a banana in bacon and roasting it.

    1. I made a 7 hour slow cooked beef cheek stew, with onion and red wine. The sauce was a little thin, and I said I'd probably just make some cauliflower mash to soak it up. A colleague I was telling suggested adding some instant mash powder to thicken it..

    2. At work, with my enormous bowl of lamb stew with veg and stock, and the girl across from me is eating a pack of 2 minute noodles microwaved with some carrot. Everyone applauds her on her healthy choice and assumes a look of disgust at my greed.

So, went to a friend's house for dinner last night. All homemade: Potato salad, watermelon salad, ribs in barbecue sauce, peach cobbler and store bought ice cream. Today, my gut is killing me. The commercial ribs and store bought ice cream are tearing through me like crazy and I feel like crap because there was not one item in the meal that didn't have sugar in it in one form or another. No wonder they are all obese (friend has had gastric bypass and lost her pancreas because she got violently ill not long after and almost died). He makes almost all his own bread and their adult daughter has put on a good 40 pounds in the last year. And my friend has problems with alcohol (sugar addiction). He's lucky because even though he's in the military, he is a good 6 feet tall and carries much of his weight in his frame. Sigh. Nice to be with them, hard to see their choices.

Not a CW, but a 'caught by the CW faileo trap'

Was out shopping yesterday. One child at a birthday party. The other at home with Dad. An afternoon to wander about Bed Bath and Beyond with no one nagging, whining, running to the restroom. Bliss. Adjacent to BB&B is a smoothie place, Robeks. Why not, says I. I had done my 'move at slow pace for a long time', my house was clean, laundry done, a warm afternoon. And a smoothie is better than a sweet, correct?

I enter, contemplate the kale, carrot, beet, apple juice (Too sweet! says I) and then see the 'greek yogurt and strawberry'. Hmm. That sounds great! Offered with 'less carbs' and 'semi-sweet' taste. OK. It is tangy, and delicious, but on the sweet side. That did not stop me from sucking down a medium size.

Today the curiosity killed the cat, and I checked the website for nutrition breakdown. Good God, I just sucked down 86 grams of carbs in ONE SMOOTHIE!!! No wonder I was jittery in the afternoon!
