Yeah, I used to listen to his podcast interviews for a bit. Some have been fluff for me. It's a pick here and there, with some 'eh' thrown in.

I'm too busy to read or listen to stuff that I don't always find beneficial.

I guess I'd read or listen to his stuff that is worth-while, but for the most part, my RSS folder was getting full of his stuff that I never got around to listening to or reading.

I agree to disagree. I don't think most people named here look bad for their age.

Jimmy, well, I just unsubscribed to his blog. I was wondering why Mark led me there, now I am not interested in reading his stuff anymore....nor have I been interested for some time now.

There were a few blogs that I also recently unsubscribed to, due to their lack of inspiration, due to their daily menus consisting of diet coke, etc.

I'm not perfect, but I do like to be inspired by good (healthy) role models.

so true maba. That's why I can't stand forums based on Atkins or low carb lifestyles in general... because people get so wrapped up in their low carb "substitutions" and junk frankenfoods that are engineered to be low-carb but are NOT in any way natural REAL foods.

I found Jimmy Moore's "menu" blog a while ago and it depressed me so much to see the crap he eats and all the diet sodas and other junk... http://lowcarbmenu.blogspot.com/

Exercise is everything! Jack LaLane proved that he is what 96, 97 now? ....snd looks great! Jack lalane is almost primal too.

He has egg whites in the morning, piece of fruit, piece of toast, milk or coffee for breakfast

he has meat/fish/cottage cheese + big ass 10 vegetable salad for lunch ...olive oil + lemon dressing.

he has meat/foul for dinner + lightly steemed vegetables

breakfast - yogurt with fruit

Jack lalanne is essentially low fat and low carb.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VuW3RfWJ1H0

and those are just his recommendations for other people. I have talked to his marketing rep. He eats cashew occasionally as a treat.

Redford looks as though he's had a bit of a nip/tuck somewhere along the line and has aged oddly. Harrison Ford doesn't look bad to me - a bit careworn but he still has a good body for his age.

@mom500
I have to agree the pics you posted are very good.
Eades seems to have improved because when I saw him in the movie "FatHead" he was flabby, puffy and tired looking.

Most actors indeed look worse and worse month after month and sometimes I can't believe how much they have balloneed sometimes even without gaining weight, they just look puffy and unhealthy. I have seen on the Zone Chief website that several good looking actors and actress follow the Zone to maintain their look and health. Although the Zone diet is not primal I think it's interesting to see people realizing they need healthier eating and less carbs to avoid degenerating.

Harrison Ford also looks very unhealthy to me.

http://www.bestweekever.tv/bwe/images/2009/02/Harrison_Ford.jpg

I can't help but remember his line in the first Indiana Jones movie: "It's not the years, honey, it's the mileage."

Oh, and Robert Redford; I think he's spent a bit too much time in the sun at his ranch.

http://blog.taragana.com/e/wp-content/uploads/2009/07/robert-redford.jpg

These are publicity photos where they're looking their best. I've seen them in interviews where they look much, much worse. I know Redford is 73, but he just looks like a dissipated old man to me.

Niklas, I think its good to know for those who are trying to lose heaps of weight that they don't have to kill themselves with exercise. If they concentrate on the diet the weight will start falling off. Once they start losing weight they may have more interest in exercise and start doing some resistance training.

Then there are things like balance. Strength, balance, etc become more important as we age too, to avoid injuries. The only way to achieve strength and balance is to exercise in ways which promote these things. They also help in field sobriety tests! ;)

Bobbylight - sometimes I find it easier to nod and say "kinda-ish" when people think I'm on Atkins - at least they have some concept of low carb / no bread. Then I can always add in about eating "clean" rather than junk.

As for exercise, I was under the impression that cadiovascular was the appetite stimulator (can vouch for that!), but resistance / weights ensured you kept or built up muscle as you reduced calories/dropped fat.

Animalcule - fit and capable is the best goal to have I reckon! I'm never going to be a supermodel, my natural shape is "sturdy" hahaha. But I want and need to be able to look after myself.

Yeah AuH2Ogirl, I have very defined muscles from eating this way, but I am not strong at all (have really been slacking with exercise for 4 months now - all I do is walk, and some gardening). I look good, but I prefer to be fit and capable!

I've read on ZC also the belief that if you eat ZC and don't exercise, you'll build muscle anyway. And, you shouldn't really exercise unless you're playing a sport or something. You shouldn't exercise just to exercise.

My beef (no pun intended) with that is while that may be true, you may put on more muscle than while you were eating SAD and not exercising, will you be strong? I exercise because I want to be able to go on a moderately strenuous hike carrying my camera, tripod, and a couple lenses without having to stop and rest a million times, and things like that. Being muscular doesn't necessarily mean you're in good condition.

@Sue
Yes Insulin Resistance definitely contributes to weight gain, as it makes it difficult to get into a low insulin period. If there is no low insulin period weight cannot be lost.

Also Insulin resistance is mostly accompanied by Leptin Resistance because they have the same cause, glycation. So it is a vicious cycle, more food (the sweet type) more hunger and more resistance.

@Sue
still I would be wary to conclude anything from such a study and maybe other factors (like the health of the partecipants) influenced it because a meta-analysis I saw showed that when exercising the energy intake increase in response to exercise is always below energy expenditure. That means that exercise do lead to using more energy than you take with food while Taubes seemed almost to suggest that exercise would lead to weight gain by working up an appetite.

The problem here as I see it is the term 'exercise' is very subjective. Exercise, to me, means high intensity for a very brief period of time. Exercise to someone else might mean a 1 hour jog through the woods everyday.

If you read the book 'Body by Science', they do a really good job of explaining why certain forms, particularly chronic cardio, is as you quoted someone "a coming heart attack".

Niklas, In Good Calories, Bad Calories - it is not Taubes' claims that exercise makes you hungrier its from early research.

For instance in the book:
P259, 260, 261 - "Russell Wilder of Mayo Clinic lectured on obesity in 1932, he noted that his patients tended to lose more weight with bed rest, while unusually strenuous physical exercise slows the rate of loss.
Until the 1960s, clinical investigators routinely pointed out that moderate exercise would lead only to insignificant increases in energy expenditure, and these could be easily matched by slight and comparatively effortless changes in diet. Vigorous muscle exercise usually results in immediate demand for a large meal, noted endocrinologist Hugo Rony in 1940. In 1960, when the epidemiologist Alvan Feinstein examined the efficacy of various obesity treatments in a lengthy review in the Journal of Chronic Diseases, he dismissed exercise in a single paragraph. There has been ample demonstration that exercise is an ineffective method of increasing energy output. Feinstein noted, since it takes far too much activity to burn up enough calories for a significant weight loss. In addition, physical exertion may evoke a desire for food so that the subsequent intake of calories may exceed what was lost during the exercise. By this time, though exercise had a profoundly influential proponent: the Harvard nutritionist Jean Mayer, who would almost single-handedly overturn a century of clinic evidence and anecdotal experience".

It's diet that is important for weight loss. Exercise is good for maintaining weight and has other health benefits. Its not the major catalyst in weight loss is what I believe Taubes was saying.

Exercise isn't useless, but it appears to be overrated in terms of weight/fat loss. I believe obesity is a symptom of sickness, and that sick people shouldn't exercise until they get healthy.

Also, by "exercise" I mean real exercise, not normal average daily activity and movement. But we definitely need more research into why a bed rest prescription for the chronically obese used to be just the thing.

@Sue
I have read many people ditching exercise, expecially on ZC board. For example I was reading this person claiming that he has a set of dumbbells but brought them in the basement because exercise is useless. Since Taubes started claiming that exercise just makes you hungrier (not that I or science evidence agress) even more people are claiming the less they exercise the better. On low-carb friends there are even those saying to stay in bed and find a sedentary job because that's the healthiest thing.
Another one called "exercising" a "coming heart attack".

Niklas, who is claiming that you can look athletic and lean without exercise?
I think you can lose weight without exercise but its beneficial to atleast do resistance training.

Anand, I think insulin resistance contributes to weight gain. If your muscle cells are resistant to the call of insulin the body still has to get that glucose out of your bloodstream so it sends it into fat storage - which is happily accepted.

@Primal Child

I don't really think that Insulin Response has much to do with Weight gain. Its really more due to Leptin Resistance. The brain does not know that we are getting fat. It thinks that there is too little fat, and tells us to eat more.

High Insulin makes it difficult to lose weight, but if Leptin Resistance goes down, weight can downwards. The speed will depend on how long we are in low insulin period, compared to the high insulin period. If insulin is high most of the time, there can be no fat loss.

This is the reason snacking while trying to lose weight is bad. It doesn't really matter what you eat.

Diet coke it seems contributes to leptin resistance. Insulin Resistance and Leptin Resistance are both very similar problems; caused by same agents. So it is possible that it will cause insulin resistance as well.
