I've been reading MDA on & off for a while, but really need to lose weight. I already eat only real, whole, naturally raised food, but just gotta lose some weight that built up from the sugar-addict years!

My 30 day goal is to lose 8lbs. My means are:
- Move more: Start with 5m walking today, increase one minute/day.
- Lift more heavy stuff: Start with 5m biceps today, increase one minute/day.
- Drop all grains & non-berry fruits for the 30 days.
- Limit other non-veggie carbs like non-fermented milk.

Wish me success! Off to start my journal...

i started 30 day challenge on jan 12, i think. i had a terrible head cold that week. terrible! probably not the best way to start, but on the other hand, i lived on delicious homemade chicken soup for a week.

today makes 3 weeks. i've only lost 5 pounds. the head cold is gone (and honestly only lasted about 4 days and did NOT settle in my chest...... a miracle!) i have noticed i'm starting to feel better overall. i feel "lighter". i don't know if that makes sense. clothes seem to fit a little better. was hoping for a little more weight loss a little sooner.

i am not working out much. a few days of walking and/or a little out door activity.... played catch with the football and some goofy chasing game on sunday. i know i need to start moving more. i will. soon. ;-) i know that makes a big difference for the weight loss.

i have given up all grains. eating very little dairy.....maybe a 1/2 tablespoon in a salad or on top of soups. no milk or yogurt (although, as soon as i get around to making some yogurt, i am planning on eating it in small doses). i've had very little sugar.....really just what is inevitable in a restaurant salad dressing or a jerk sauce we used to dress some pulled pork, or a small square of 80% dark chocolate. the jerk sauce was only about a tablespoon for the entire roast, which was an easy 4 servings......so, not much sugar in the one serving. i don't drink coffee. rarely hot tea. love my water! it has been easier than i thought to give up the carbs. week 2 was hard. this week, much better!!! we had raspberries with home whipped cream (no sugar, just whipped cream!). maybe 3 nights a week, a piece of dark chocolate. i love dark chocolate, but i finally found my limit and couldn't take the 99% dark chocolate. ooohhhh..... bitter.

eating lots of eggs, bacon, meats, vegetable soups, beef based chili, cauliflower, peppers....moslty. what about salami? that's an easy snack. :-) i'm hoping we're about 80-90% primal. haven't had a cheat day!!! i should keeping a food diary.

currently 175 lbs (started at 180 lbs). 5'5". size 12ish. "athletic build". history of mild, exercise (or sick) induced asthma. age 34.

goal.....mostly feel better. look better. i'd like to lose 50ish lbs......not set on a number. i also like how primal living really fits with eating better for our planet. we want to live a sustainable lifestyle!!! still lots to do, but those are the goals.

happy tuesday.

Hi, Im Jase and I'm new to the forum. My PBC is to go 30 solid days on only unprocessed meat, coconut oil and a small amount of FODMAP approved PB approved veggies. It's going to be the toughest 30 days of my life thus far I have a feeling! I am doing this because I was diagnosed with Crohn's 2 1/2 years ago and it has only gotten worse. I have also noticed how traumas of my past are related to my food binges and purges as well as my outright refusal to eat properly. I'm not really that worried about weight loss although it would be a cool afterthought, I'd just really love to get my body right and my heal up my emotional wounds. Starting tomorrow, December 14, until January 14.

Hi everyone,

I'm currently 150lbs @ 12% BF.

My goal is to lower my BF to 9% for January 1st, which is in 17 days.

It sounds unattainable but I'm confident that a strict primal diet combined with intermitent fasting, HIIT cardio and strength training will yield powerful results.

Wish me luck! :D

Hi all. I am waiting for my PB book to come in...any day now pls!
But, I have made a concentrated effort to knock out the processed foods till then. Mostly.
Looking to lose weight, be able to smack that softball and run the bases better than ever! I also want to hang with the 'younger crowd' on the mountain bikes.
Weight loss goal is 60lbs. Currently around 205.
Body fat %...I'd like to hit the mid-teens. Currently almost 40%. Puke.
From lurking around here, I get the gist of the Primal way of life. Simply need some guidelines as to quantities etc.
Come on Book! Will start the day after it gets here and give this a 30 day shot. (hoping to be a few pounds lighter before my 40th birthday in January!)

And yes, that's a beer in my hand in my pic. Love beer. Good, chewy, dark beer!

Hi, my name is Virginia Gardner. I live in Charlottesville, Virginia. I've been dealing with flat metabolism which has been brought on by menopause and quitting smoking after 30+ years. I keep busy with a real estate business, as well as working in my studio (I make art, http://virginiamosaics.com), but both of these involve a lot of ass-sitting, and between my backside and my newly acquired stomach, I'm freaking out. I attended a Realtor function recently and realized that I was in the company of a whole lot of very fat women and that I was becoming one of THEMMMMMM. 20 lbs is my weight loss goal, at a minimum. At that point, I fully expect to have adjusted my consumption lifestyle. I began my journaling yesterday.

My challenge is to eliminate all foods I am allergic to (soy, wheat, yeast, sugar) and to get my triglycerides and fasting blood sugar back down to normal. They are both just a few points elevated out of range; 164 for the triglycerides and 105 for blood sugar. My HDL is a respectable 52 but it would be nice to see it go up higher -- it did use to be in the 60s. I would also like to lose at least 50 pounds.

My 30-Day Challenge will include a diet of only unprocessed, fresh foods: meat, eggs, fruit (including avocado), vegetables (no corn or tubers), olive oil, nuts, and a small bit of honey.

My challenge is to keep grains, sugar and whatever processed crap to zero, train capoeira 3-5 times every week and eat only to fuel my body!
I will forgive a teaspoon of honey every now and then and perhaps some dairy(mainly to add taste to some foods)
Good luck to all of us!

My challenge is to completely normalize my blood sugars by the beginning of November. Right now they're much better than they were (180s) but I'd like to get them down to 90s fasting and 110s after eating, instead of the mid-120s.

I'd also like to raise my HDL from its current 37 to somewhere above 50, while dropping my triglycerides from their current 133 to somewhere below 100.

Anything besides that (weight loss, for example) is just extra goodness. :D

I am 47 too but I started this diet in Jan of 2008 when I hit 249 pounds. I am at 215 pounds but have really slacked off when a job loss and a wife leaving hit me hard. I was doing some self examining today and found the article that made a huge difference in my lifestyle change.

My goals are to lose enough weight that my clothes fit better, exercise more often, cook healthier and more primal for the next six weeks and have fun doing it!

I am tryng to replace the calories but not the taste: tofu instead of cheese, lentils instead of meat.
dont get me wrong, I am not off the western diet wagon completly and wanted to know if the site or the members have any ideas of good replacements.

My 30 day challenge is to adopt this as a lifestyle. My longer term goal is to drop about 50 lbs by next summer. I'm pleased to say I am on target losing a pound a week. I also need to increase my strength. My one son is a phys-ed teacher. He has introduced me to static contraction. Lifting weights for the first time ever... in three weeks my squat has gone from 135 lbs to 305 lbs. ( More on that later.)

Mark a special thanks for your comments and support.

I am now jumping in thoeugh I have been observing for about amonth, bought the book read the whole thing within three days. I was having migraine ( I now call them "my grain" headaches three times a week. Have been following the program for three weeks alrady, have lost nine pounds and am happily learning to enjoy being outside taking advantage of the more natural way I was meant to live. And as for that 80/20 rule I have actually not slipped up whisch is awesome! As for my goals I have about 25 lbs to lose but more importantly I want to be able to feel free of carbohydrate addiction that has followed me around for many years making me a slave to the dreaded food pyramid.

I guess its better late than never. I have been watching for a while and I think its time to jump in. I have been attempting to go primal for almost two months. My biggest problem is that I am a high school student with a limited income. I do my best, but sometimes I feel that dinner is dinner, even if it contains noodles. So, my overarching goal is to do whatever is in my power to eat and exercise like grok. It would be a help to me to list a set of clear goals in order to make sure that I am holding myself accountable.
1. Stop eating ice cream. (My one real vice)
2. Insure success with a well stocked kitchen
3. Change my sleeping patterns (Go to bed earlier.)
4. Incorporate one HIIT workout a week.
5. Become more spontaneous with low level exercise.
6. Post a journal once/day for accountability.

My challenge is to give up refined sugar for 30 days. I'm scared...which feels a little dumb...but this is my tough area.

I already eat pretty healthy...probably not as clean as many of the regulars on this site but I do fairly well...lots of fruits, salads with olive oil, lean meats, some veggies.

But,the sugar. Oh, how I love sugar. It's delicious. I know it's horrible for me but I love froyo. I love cake. I love ice cream. I love peanut butter cookies. Just talking about them is making my mouth water. However, I also love CrossFit and fitness and running and looking fancy in a bikini...so, I want to test myself and get rid of sugar for 30 days.

Hi,
Another late comer. Just got back from trip to Mexico. Have been eating 65% primal for the last month and a half. Fell off while travelling back into US.
Goals: 1) Get more habitual in eating primal when my environment changes; such as travel, eating out, etc.
2) Drop from 170 to 130 (I have a 5'3" frame)
3) Add in weight lifting
4) Reduce dairy consumption (I LOVE my cheese)
Looking forward to catching up on the Challenge emails and getting to it. Good luck to everyone!

Hi all -- I'm a 65 year old guy who thought I was pretty fit til one day walking downtown to meet my wife for lunch I started feeling chest pains, shortness of breath, general crapiness - all the classic symptoms. I felt better when we sat down to eat but the symptoms returned as I walked back home. I thought: I'll walk really fast to the local hospital and if I still feel this bad I'll go into emergency. Three days later I emerged with 2 stents in my coronary arteries, prescriptions for lipitor, plavix, beta blockers and ace inhibitors and some vague advice to lose a little weight and maybe go for a half our walk a few times a week.

That was 3 years ago. Since then I've lost 25 pounds starting with Zone (kinda) then, as I learned more from site's like Mark's, cutting down on grains and slowly adding more saturated fat. And I've been shifting my exercise from jogging to heavy weights and sprint swimming. So far so good. My doc is pleased with my lipid profile.

Time to go the rest of the way primally speaking,
so for August:
- cut out grains completely
- find a source of grass fed beef, chicken, butter here in Eastern Ontario
- cut legumes
- keep up some running (I really enjou running the trails) but shorter distance and add occasionall sprints.
- experiment with IF.
Cheers, Ron

Jumping in a little late but I just got back from vacation and am on a mission! Right now Im standing 6'4" 225lbs and probably around 15-17% bodyfat. My goals are:

1. 30 days of paleo with no cheats or alcohol! This will be tough because I haven't gone 30 days with no alcohol in a LONG time.

2. Do 6-8 Crossfit and Crossfit Endurance WODs a week.

3. Get below 10% body fat. It wont be possible in just 30 days but this will be a great start.

Hi, I'm a 54 y/o male, 40 lbs overweight, arthritis pain in my knees and hands, slipped disc in lower neck. Plus my Dad and 2 uncles had bad diabetes with amputations. Walking for 30 minutes is not easy, 20 minutes is OK.

So anyway, the warranty has definitely expired on this body, and it is way past time to do better maintenance!

I have a bad addiction to Dr. Pepper and other sweets. Plus I love my bread.

On the other hand, I have great respect for early American Indians and other hunter/gatherers, and would like to adopt their lifestyle as much as possible, while keeping my day office job.

And it makes sense that because Dr. Pepper and bread weren't around 10,000 years ago, that they MIGHT be bad for you.

My wife and I had some success with "Body for Life" a few years ago. You can guess what happened, in a short while I had regained all the bad weight. No hint at all that I had done anything special.

Also had some similar brief success many years ago with the "Caveman Diet" while checking on allergies, suggested by the allergy specialist. My wife, who is a registered dietician, didn't like that diet and will probably give me grief on the Primal Diet as well.

But she is no thinner than me...

So here goes: for the next 30 days, I will adopt the primal diet, no bread no soda no pasta. Just veg/fruit/meat/nuts/water.

I'll walk 20 minutes a day (for now, maybe more later) and also add some weights. We have a Bowflex machine in the house gathering dust (oh yeah those commercials make it seem so easy).

Right now I won't make a weight loss goal, although if it is more than 5 lbs, then I'll know it was not just dehydration or similar daily fluctuations.

Thanks all, and good luck with your challenges too.

Mike R

Hello,

I am a 54 year old woman who struggled with my weight in my teens & 20's, lost & maintained my weight loss in my 30's & 40's and now in my 50s have been struggling again. I used to be very fitness conscious but kind of "gave up" for a few years, gained weight which consequently made me feel discouraged so the cycle repeated itself.

I need/want to lose approx. 70 lbs. I would really like to lose 40 lbs. by the end of the year. For the next 30 days my goals include:

1) Eat primarily healthy protein and organic vegetables.
2) Limit amount of fruits
3) Exercise a minimum of 3x per week but most importantly regain my previous love of exercise so it's something I want to do.
4) Lose 7-10 lbs.

I love reading everyone's posts. Thanks for being so generous with your comments. I hope to learn things that work for you that might also work for me.

All the best,

Joy
