Great one yesterday when I was making my dinner (pork steaks) and two of my flatmates were also in the kitchen... One of them offered me a biscuit, I declined, so he says to the other one "I've never seen Gary eat a biscuit the whole time he's been here... he's a healthy eater. He does eat a lot of meat though...".

They also found it hard to believe that I can just eat a main course and stop without feeling any compelling need to have a dessert. "I take it you just don't eat desserts because of your tastes?". The implication being that it's not out of health concern because I can't be concerned about my health when I eat all that meat?

Haha FNW "Full fat. All the fat." I laughed at that :)

And PrimalK, that would have had me staring at my lap so as not to unknowingly be giving a horrified look...I've got an expressive face apparently. Only 2 pastries being an improvement is like only having two bullet wounds instead of three...

love this post!

i spent this morning with my in-laws (not by choice) and my FIL asked me what my 8 month old is trying with foods right now. I mentioned the veggies and fruits he likes and has tried. i also mentioned the chicken and turkey... then he asks "has he tried oatmeal yet?"... my reply "no, and he will not be eating grains. they have no nutritional value to it"... and both my ILs hemmed and hawed... They have noticed that I have lost a lot of weight but I never told them what I was doing. They already have issues that I have my own opinion on things....

So my MIL says "well, at least you are just eating chicken and turkey... not a lot of red meat, right?"... coming from a family full of auto-immune issues, i just smiled and said "mmmmm red meat is the BEST!"... funny thing, my FIL called this morning saying that his IBS is okay now so i could come down to the house....

I loved how my SIL was in the back biting her tongue. i know she wanted to say something (the once before vegetarian and a "resident" at Stanford - because Dr.s know it all, right? ;P)

Ahhhh, this is going to be fun! haha

My brother lives in the states and he gets full fat yogurt from Middleeastern stores (it's staple in the diet there). But I wonder if you guys would like it, it's slightly more sour and more lumpy that the "Western" version, due to the live bacteria.

Butterworks Farm here in VT - full fat AND grass-fed! But only available in a full quart, and there's no way I can eat that much without most of it going bad. They sell a pint container, but only in maple - yummy, but sugary.

Seven Star Farms Organic yogurt from Phoenixville, PA (near Philly). Awesome stuff that's full fat.

Also, Hawthorne Farms (from somewhere in NY state) full fat yogurt.

And the usual suspect, Fage Total.

Add Alta Deena yogurt to that list, from SoCal.

I first had it about 1979 and couldn't believe how good it was. I really knew nothing then about foods but figured it must have to do with the cream.

Yes, of course.

Teri thanks for the brand names.

Maba, I honestly doubt the doc will be sensible. I mean, the magazine thingy they gave me today said to eat whole grains, fruits and vegs, lean protein, and low-fat dairy. The Department of Defense book (it's a military hospital) mostly said to eat "healthy foods" but at one point it actually wrote out the standard food pyramid as the official recommendation for pregnant women, beginning with 6-11 servings of grains and topped off with very little fat/oils.

oh no no, i was merely saying how i too had the same experience, that's all. Isn't it crazy that they stock up on all the processed stuff but I had to go to 3 different stores before I found full-fat yoghurt. I have the same experience with the Fage greek yoghurt too. They carry the big tubs in 2% and non-fat, but the full-fat is available only in the small sizes which ends up being expensive when I buy a couple of them at a time.

I hope your Dr. gives you some sensible dietary advice. I was talking to a co-worker today who's pregnant and she told me she drinks soy milk w/ cereal for the omega-3's and that she drinks skim milk as that's what her Dr. recommended. Even CW-spouting people recommend lots of fats for pregnant people and young children, couldn't believe her doc asked her to drink skim milk!!! I told her about the phyto-estrogens in Soy, she said she'll ask her doctor about it before stopping it. Maybe I should have emailed her that article on soy from WAPF.

We are blessed here in San Francisco. We have two brands of full-fat yogurt: Pavel's Greek style, and Strauss Creamery.

I suffer from an embarrasment of riches...but maybe you could ask your grocer about those two brands?

Another one from today, in the grocery store.

Husband picked up his favorite vanilla yogurt and I went to switch it for the Stonybrook kind... preferably full-fat. But there was only fat free and low fat.

Me to the guy stocking the huge wall of yogurt: Do you have any yogurt that is full-fat?

Him: Fat free?

Me: No, all the fat. Full fat.

Him: Oh, FULL fat. *glances at some yogurt* fat free, low fat, fat free... fat free... no full fat! *scours another section* NO full fat! *incredulous, still looking" There is NO FULL FAT YOGURT.

Me: Oh, well thanks for helping me look. Isn't that so crazy though?

Him: Yes! Very crazy! NO FULL FAT!

(English is for sure not his first language btw... I thought he was awesome. haha)

Today at the doctor's office, meeting with the nurse for my first prenatal appointment:

Nurse: So you'll want to be eating fruits and veggies, meat, and lots of whole grains.

Me: Well I do eat meat and eggs, lots of veggies, some fruit, but I don't eat grain.

Nurse: Well that's going to be a BIG thing your doctor will want to discuss.

Me: Why? I eat nutrient-dense foods. What can I get from grains that I can't get from other foods?

Nurse: Well there's LOTS of good fiber in grains! ... but there is fiber in vegetables and fruits too I guess.

Me: Right. (i didn't bring up the debatable "need" for lots of fiber) And grains also have anti-nutrients that bind to vitamins you need and make them unusable. So, not eating them.

Nurse: Well I don't know anything about that!

...later...

Me: Well I've been eating chicken stock, lots of eggs, bananas, apples, sweet potatoes...

Her: Wow! That's better than a lot of people. Most people can't stand eggs if they have morning sickness.

Me: Well it sure beats saltines and peanut butter sandwiches, doesn't it?

Her: No kidding! You're doing great.

Me to husband: See? She's on my side already. She just doesn't realize it yet, and she's probably going to stop eating grains too.

Picture the scene:

Train journey to work 6.30am. Me, sitting opposite (ahem) very overweight man, who is having a conversation on his mobile phone. He is, at the same time, stuffing his mouth with a butter croissant, a chocolate croissant and a huge hot chocolate with cream on top. Conversation goes like this:

"Well the doctor tells me that I need to lose weight and that I need to get my diabetes under control. I told him that I don't eat very much, just breakfast and then dinner at night, no alcohol, but he wasn't very impressed.... No darling, I'm not having my usual - I've cut it down to two pastries and a small drink today...."

I so wanted to tell him about PB, but you know, I don't think it would have helped.

And that was a SMALL drink? I hate to see what size the large one was. It was truly a large bucket...

I work in a restaurant. There's a guy that comes in every day and orders a cup of veggies and a cup of brown rice. (most people get a "meal" bowl with mostly rice, some chicken or beef, and some veggies)

A few days ago my boss mentioned that the guy had been getting the same lunch for years, day in day out, and that he (boss) would get sick of eating the same thing every day. I said, "yeah and he doesn't even eat meat!"
Boss replies: "well that's why he's so skinny."

um..
I'm pretty sure he's skinny because he eats like a bird, not because he avoids meat.

What's worse is that the majority of people will believe it, despite the words "meat, fish" being the first on the list... some folks can't add 1+1.

A funny thing I noticed lately is how this guy at my gym does 20+ reps of an exercise and is all "UGHH.. UGHH" by the end... while I, on the side, am doing 5 reps and growling. Does he think he's doing better than me, I wonder?

And ever since I've been in that gym - close to 4 months - this rather heavyset guy has been doing the SAME exercises everyday, probably in the same order, and I don't think he has increased the weights either (yes I noticed all that). What a waste of time.

Oh, and people stare when I do Turkish get ups...
