Anti-inflammatory herbs help a lot. Go to a Whole-Foods/ healthfood type store and get them in bulk (or off of the internet), this kind of source is more pure, better quality and cheaper.

* Cinnamon
* Turmeric
* Ginger
* Bromelain (enzyme)
* Devil's Claw
* St. John's Wort
* White Willow
* Licorice Root

Too name a few ;-)

Nightshades, really? I eat quite a few of those - I love raw peppers, and tomatoes and also baked eggplant. Maybe that's why the pain doesn't go away completely. I guess I need to experiment with that. Thanks Tarlach.

I had definite finger joint pain throughout my 40s. I went gluten-free about 18 months ago and all of the pain is completely gone in addition to a whole list of other ailments that disappeared. I realize not everyone is as gluten-intolerant as some, but removal of gluten grains seems to be a key to less inflammation. In my case, the biggest gain was eradication of migraines that I had had since childhood.

I've also had hand pain that started when the odometer rolled to 40. I put it down to my job, which alternates computer use with repetitive stress-inducing lab prep work, on top of the ravages of a history of gymnastics, martial arts, and cycling (shifting frequently spares your knees at the expense of your hands). I had good luck with a supplement called Zyflamend that relieved about 75% of the pain (can't do glucosamine due to severe shellfish allergy). Eliminating gluten grains in mid-June brought almost total pain relief. With Mom's 80th birthday celebration last weekend I had cake for 2 days straight, along with other massive wheat indulgences. This morning my right thumb was achy, for the first time since I went mostly gluten-free back in mid-June. Not sure if this is immediate fall-out from the weekend gluten-fest, a delayed reaction to last Wednesday's pizza pig-out, or a cumulative effect from the combination. Yeah, when some of us fall off the wagon, we keep bouncing down the street. On the bright side, I am almost 19 hours into a 24-hour IF and I've had no increase in hunger twinges despite the high-carb lead-in over the times when I've gone in low-carb. These twinge lasts less than 10 minutes and occur around 18 hours or more after my last meal (seems an exaggeration to call it a genuine "pang"). I will be very interested to see how long this thumb pain persists now that the gluten onslaught has ceased. To confound things a bit I did lift heavy this morning (among other things, 4 sets of 5 deadlifts, which do normally test my grip strength as well as my leg strength).

I've started getting this but I put it down to my addiction to computer games more than anything. I just went to Japan and Korea on holiday and ended up eating rice most days. The pain in my hands went away, which indicates to me that it was because I wasn't near a computer, rather than dietary. But certainly, wheat and similar grains cause inflammation, no question.

Most lucid post by you, ever, Griff! Jus' kidding!

Well, I've had finger joint pain worsen, I do believe, since going PB. I'm almost grain free, maybe a couple of ounces a week of product.

Of course, "Proximity in time does not equal causation." Maybe I'm just getting older and this is part of my DNA.

Glucosamine and chondroitin will help with joint pain, but it sounds to me like you have the same grain hypersensitivity/allergy that I do. I had rheumatoid arthritis. Since I stopped eating wheat, I've had no more arthritis pain anywhere.

I'd rather have the pain-free life and no carbs than the carbs and the pain.

I was amazed while reading PB that Mark also had his finger joints start hurting when he was in his early 40's. The same thing happened to me a little over a year ago. I will be 44 in November. Every time I stop carbohydrates, most of the pain goes away. I experimented several times and each time brought the same results. No grains, no pain. So now I am doing my best to be Primal but at times it can be difficult with a 3 and 6 y/o in the house. This last time that I ended up eating carbs was at a football party and it is taking longer for pain to subside. Any suggestions on supplements to ease this up a bit?
