Uh, actually, avocado, the logic of babies and no fiber does hold, if someone has been asserting that without fiber one can't make poops, or that poops exist only in order to pass on the fiber.

Babies make poops several times a day with no fiber at all.

For a long, riveting reading experience, which will teach you more about poop than you ever wanted to know, I'd suggest Googling "Fiber Menace" by Konstantin Monastyrsky.

So far my own experience indicates he's right. Excessive fiber clogs up the system and leads to straining at stool trying to pass huge compacted poops too large for the plumbing. When I cut back on fiber, life got easier, poops got multiple, smaller, and softer. kafloop, all done.

He doesn't mind eating the kind of fiber normally present in a reasonable amount of fruits and vegetables, though he doesn't believe in eating veggies by the ton, either. But he truly despises fiber from grains, and he waxes eloquent against psyllium.

He says that excessive fiber overworks the digestive system, as it struggles to digest the indigestible.

Here, have some fun:
http://www.gutsense.org/

His book Fiber Menace is also excellent.

Well if English is my second language, then German is my third, though it'll be my baby's mother tongue o_O. That part is going to be complicated. My parents got me started on English before I can remember and most of my studies/TV shows/books were in English, so I don't think of it as "second" :)

Anyway, "Turn for Awesome Cheap Junk" LOL funny :)

Sure there is. They also get by fine without any solid food. Without anything at all besides milk, in fact. Doesn't mean that's healthy for adults. I'm not saying we need lots of fiber. But your logic doesn't hold.

You might want to look into becoming a lay midwife (if you are serious). I think they learn through apprenticeship with other midwives, and they don't actually get certified - that way the laws don't apply to them the same way, and they can do home births and stuff.
One of my friends had a home birth w/a lay midwife because the certified ones wouldn't attend her since she is very thin and has a spine curvature (which made her not low-risk i guess? but everything went fine and they did have backup plans in case of emergency).

It definitely does help! We always get rid of things before and after we move... somehow though in between we manage to keep buying stuff (says the girl who is going to Macy's today to possibly get a couch and some new pans for our kitchen). *sigh*

Glad you liked the crust - definitely a tasty thing. And the whole milk mozzarella is definitely a YUM factor compared to the "part skim" pre-shredded stuff you get in the bags. SO good, agreed.

Awesome that you started a blog! I'll have to check it out, though I won't promise to read every post - I'm trying to cut down on this computer-time. :( I'm going through some blogs today and unsubscribing from several. Always sad to let go of a good one but what must be done must be done. I don't want to be a computer-mommy. Anyway, links are always welcome - so thank you! I just hate when people re-post my entire recipe (even if they changed a few words or a couple ingredients, it makes my teeth itch).
If you do decide to go with a self-hosted blog anytime soon, check out dreamhost - that's who I use for my web hosting and i LOVE them. Have been with them for years and years, and also turned my dad onto them - and lately he's even been calling me on the phone to gush about their awesome customer service and support. I have their link on my website along with a coupon code so your first year will be super cheap.

Okay it's Sunday morning, and I'm a little sad because it's gray and chilly outside :( I'm debating whether or not I want to go for a run outside or do yoga first...maybe yoga first and run later? At least yoga is inside :) Yesterday hubby went for a 2 mile walk with me around the neighborhood after dinner, and then I did No More Trouble Spots when I got home. Finally a good workout on a weekend again!

We may have found a decent treadmill for $50, so we're just waiting to hear back from the guy selling it on Craigslist. Maybe he'll write back today and I can run on that while it's raining later...

Yesterday, the first day of Spring!!, was absolutely gorgeous! And there were about 1,000 people at Findlay Market because of this...I had to circle the whole thing 3 times to find a parking spot! This is the time of year that I start going at 8am on Saturday to avoid the crowds. A few farmers were back in the outside portion, and the inside was just slammed. I went in a different way thatn usual, and actually found a new store! It's not really new, just new to me :) It was "Saigon Market" and I decided to go inside just to see what they had in there. Turns out, there were all kinds of interesting things! Quail eggs, duck eggs, mud fish, canned EVERYTHING (including bananas...weird?), 100 different kinds of soy sauce (including Thick Soy Sauce, also weird?) and fish sauce and curry paste and a ton of different rice noodles...it was definitely interesting. I didn't buy anything in there, but it's cool that if I need some weird asian spice I can get it close by!

We had green salad with chicken for dinner after I roasted a chicken yesterday, which was delicious for the first day of Spring :) I was going to make beef tongue and oxtails, but I'm glad I saved those for today, since it's supposed to rain and be cooler. I forgot to get red wine, which is why I couldn't make it yesterday, so I'll have to get a bottle today.

Ummmmm, nothing else is very exciting today, just have to finish laundry/make the oxtails/work out....oh and finish reading Gentle Birth Choices. It really is a great book! Highly recommended to all the soon to be mamas :) Everything in the book just resonates with me so much, and makes me wish I wouldn't have to spend another 6 years in school to be a midwife in the US. Here, you have to have a nursing degree first, THEN you can get certification as a midwife. And the rules on where midwives can help you give birth are so strict in some states, like in Ohio you're not even legally allowed to have a midwife help you give birth at home. ????? Anyway, time for breakfast and yoga I think, and then more reading :) Ah lazy Sunday, how I love you!

Yeah, it's still pretty brown here. It's been a busy couple of days and it's not over yet. I'm supposed to be finishing a blog post but I'm gonna wait until after my friend's Ostara celebration, since it's an Ostara blog post.

The short version- I've been eating and drinking way too much. Still Primal, just too much. I can't wait for monday.

Gotta finish laundry and get my butt home so I can get up for church in the morning. I'm getting less and less comfortable there. I don't really fit in. That seems to be the case no matter where I go. Maybe I'm meant to be solitary in my faith. I don't know. Service is ok. It's coffee hour afterwords that's uncomfortable. Maybe I could just go for service and leave immediately. Hmm...

Huzzah for selling things that aren't needed. That definitely helps when you have to move again. I'm getting ready for a move and am going through everything triple time to see if I need it.

I also tried your cauliflower pizza. It's really good, but I didn't put enough cheese in the crust or spread it out evenly enough. So, another trial and error thing, but like I said, really tasty. Especially with whole milk mozz. I've never been a big fan of mozz by itself, but while I was cleaning off the shredder, I tasted it and died and went to heaven. SO good.

Also, I wanted to let you know that I've started my own blog and I will likely be linking to a lot of your recipes, since it's easier for me to follow someone's recipe than making my own. I'm only just learning how to cook. I've already got you on my blogroll. For now it's just a free blog. I figure I can get readership up, and when I have the money for hosting and everything I can get one that will let me have ads and make some money.

Have a great day!

Kay that is cool that your friends are getting more into eating real foods. I hope something sinks in w/this friend but even if not I'm just pleased with myself that I was able to discuss it without ever feeling "stuck" or backed into a corner.

I didn't know that spiel was "to play" in German! I just looked it up and the definition that fits how I tend to use it is "plausible glib talk" hehe. Is English your second language? I never would have guessed...

Slesca, you're so right that it just "works." And that it makes sense. I don't know why but I love reading about the science behind it and WHY it works the way it does... I've always liked science and chemistry/biology is really fun for me, but in an applied situation versus a "reading a textbook" situation... and what is more applied than food and its affect on my very own body?

Had my yard sale this morning and it was awesome! Between the early sales I made on craigslist and today's sale, I took in over $250!!! Definitely successful. We got rid of all our big stuff we wanted to sell, and of the littler stuff we have left, only a bit of it is the "we just wanted to get rid of it" category. Some of it is stuff I guess I'll keep a while longer and see if I use it. Or maybe list it on Craigslist individually w/pictures. Woo hoo.

twinmama, I agree that those things are good points, and I told him that... I just told him there were other factors that maybe he wasn't considering.

"The easiest time I have with it, is to simply ask them what sort of "essential nutrition" one gets from grains." - THIS is something I do a LOT... no one has a good answer. I usually put "that you get from grains that you CAN'T get from vegetables"... that also gets rid of the fiber response too. haha. I do want it to be clear that I'm not eating a zero carb diet. It's not like I'm solely carnivore or something.

I sent him Mark's guide to cholesterol, since he seemed to be worried about the fat/heart disease thing. Hopefully it will help. And I also sent him a "grain manifesto" that I found on another site, which gives a few good reasons not to eat grains without getting too deep.

I don't normally get in discussions/arguments like this... I'll normally say things like "well I just feel better eating this way" and shrug it off. But this guy really started with the "debate" behavior and I just went along with it. haha.
Hopefully I made him think a little.

I do think the guy had some good points... McDonalds (poison), large portions (of usually poison), and sedentary lifestyle... Yeah... he's right... eat poison, then don't move... you're gonna get fat...

Sounds like he just doesn't know what the poisons really are... And that's where he gets all confused with the food pyramid. I'm sure it's odd to hear that many foods are basically toxic to our system... really??? FOOD? And if you do eat lots of fat, (and poor quality ones at that) with a ton of insulin spiking foods... then he appears to be on target... so of course, he thinks eat fat, get fat. That's easy to get to if you leave out major components of the equation. So, big whoop. His mother is a nutritionist. If she's a good scientists, she evolves with science. You don't grab on to old conclusions when new data is entered into the equation. That's not scientific at all...

The easiest time I have with it, is to simply ask them what sort of "essential nutrition" one gets from grains. No one has ever been able to give me anything other than fiber (which I point out is undigestable), and carbohydrates, which is easy to prove as unnecessary in quatities over what one gets from fruits and vegetables.

After that, just point out how much more nutrition is available in the same nuber of calories from the primal foods.

The key is not to tell them grains are evil. Just that they are unnecessary. This keeps the debate friendly, and keeps them willing to listen.

I find the easiest way to disprove the food pyramid is with the dairy food group. Since only like 70% of the world is lactose intolerant, how can it be an essential foodgroup? When they bring up soy milk, point out that it has only existed for the last 20 years or so.

I love debating as long as everyone can keep it friendly. I'll debate politics, diet, religion, books, history, movies, and video games with anyone who cares to as long as they can avoid ad hominem attacks - which I have zero patience for.

Busy week and I got my first cold in over a year. I'm disappointed that I got one at all, but I guess getting one in March is better than the 2-3 that I'd get each year. This one's pretty bad and if my work schedule hadn't been so crazy, I definitely would have stayed home one day. I think I'm getting slightly better today, so I must be on the uphill.

Also, after it being 65 degrees on Thursday, we now have 4 inches of snow. Spring is like that around here- such a tease! My eating has been kind of so-so. I had a grilled cheese sandwich last night with some homemade chicken broth. I was just feeling so sick and sorry for myself that I couldn't take one single hour of "sick time" this week at work. Grilled cheese sounded (and tasted) really good.

Back to bacon and eggs for breakfast. I have some errands to run and general house upkeep to do, plus being sick made me less productive at work, so if I'm feeling better tomorrow I have some must-finish items that I'll have to go to the office and get done. Ugh. From feeling so positive early in the week to just feeling overworked, ill, and terribly sorry for myself now. Oh yeah, my husband's out of town for a "spring break" with his friends so I'm single-mom-ing it. Normally, this is not a big deal, but I just want to nap with my nasal spray today.

Awesome, FNW! It's so rare to actually get a chance to present the arguments for PB at length. I have to compress my responses into something like haiku in the hopes they will be heard. And you never know if people understand what you say, because even when the seed has been planted, people almost never display conversion from fixed ideas on the spot.

But one of my buddies at work was actually interested, gave the science a fair hearing, and read up on MDA himself. He was a pudgy chronic cardio addict like me, but after a week it's amazing to see how much leaner and healthier he is. And he is ecstatic about how he feels. It's like watching what happened to me, all over again, in another person's life! So immensely gratifying! We've already signed up for a mud-run 5K in August, by which point we should both be ridiculously fit.

To me, a rare success like that completely makes up for all the struggles with willfully ignorant people (or "mule-headed confusers" as my wife vividly describes them). But even those people are bound to be swept along on the wave eventually, once the PB breaks out more to the mainstream (and you know it will).

So let's keep on advertising our lifestyle with our most effective tools of communication: healthiness, happiness, and a generous disposition.

I hope I don't get tested on my primal knowledge any time soon because I don't think I'd do nearly as well. I've absorbed the concepts, but have not really absorbed the science behind it (i.e., why isn't saturated fat bad? How does sugar make you fat/cause health problems?)I didn't really need to because it just...worked. And it seemed so obvious that butter (ingredients: butter) would have to be better than ICan'tBelieveIt'sNotButterFatFree (ingredients: too numerous to list). I have absorbed a lot of the science behind the primal exercise though, and always feel free to engage in conversation about that.

I wouldn't lose hope for your friend, either. The times that I've changed my mind about things, I've started off vehemently arguing my position and it was only through that process that I discovered holes. (hmmm, vegetarian for 11 years...now patting my belly and thinking about my freezer full of STEAK!)

You never know! People immediately resist ideas that are against what they "know". BUT and I've noticed this a lot, if what you're saying is logical (and this case it is) it sinks in later. A couple of my friends are still into lowering fat, but on the other side, they've also been cutting bread and sweets out. I never said anything directly, I just repeat myself over and over that am trying to cut out refined food and eat real food. Now one of them is coming to me to say that she's proud she did not touch bread in a week. Still buying skim milk though :(

I say keep discussing :) Even if it looks useless at first! I have a feeling your husband will surprise you more in the future. My BF reached the point right now where he asks me to send him articles to send to his co-workers because they keep asking him why he doesn't eat bread or rice with lunch.

I did not know people used the word "spiel" in English! I had to look it up because it's to play in German...

Awesome, FNW. Nothing like a little challenge to convince you that you really do know what you're talking about!

I agree with jo; a year ago I was mostly vegan and convinced that I had it right, nutritionally. Now I'm full-on Primal. People can change.

That said, I think they need a motivator. I find that the only productive Primal vs CW conversations I've had are those that begin with an opportunity to share BENEFITS rather than FACTS.

People start listening when they have a real problem and you have a potential solution (if you present it properly). Also, most people need a small bite to start with.

Yesterday, a coworker told me, enviously, "you're so thin!"

I simply thanked her and said, "Lift weights and don't eat grains. That's it!"

Of course, that isn't IT, but it's the bulk of the solution. If she wants to hear more, she can ask. I often find that once the seed is planted, people come back later wanting details.

It's what every salesman knows: you're not selling products, you're selling benefits. :)

Good for you FlyNavyWife. I have learnt so much from changing my diet and reading all the research. It's nice that your husband is singing from the same hymn sheet too.

"Guy in my husband's class was arguing with me about food/nutrition today"

Actually, you were arguing with *each other*. Nobody can have an argument with someone that doesn't argue back. :-)

I don't engage people in these kinds of discussions because a) it's an unnecessary drain on my generally positive energy and b) it's a fruitless effort. When it comes down to it, very few people are actually motivated by arguments. Shrugging your shoulders, smiling, and continuing to live a healthful, happy and awesome life is much more persuasive than a battle of facts could ever be.

Went to a friend's house for a late St.Pats dinner. Corned beef, cabbage, and roasted potatoes - yum!!!

Guy in my husband's class was arguing with me about food/nutrition while we were there. His mom is into nutrition and taught home ec for something like 35 years. Very CW, very food pyramid.
The guy thinks our country's obesity problem is all because people aren't eating according to the food pyramid, are eating larger portions and more McDonald's, and are lazy non-exercisers.

Basically I gave him my spiel about eating things we evolved to eat, whole foods in their natural forms, that we don't need grains, that the insulin/glucose rollercoaster causes all types of problems... tried not to be too detailed with things until he probed me for details (by arguing w/CW "facts", not by asking).

I felt pretty good because every thing he brought up, I was not surprised by and had facts to back up "my side." Also felt GREAT that my husband who was sitting there joined in a bit... he pointed out to his friend that our brains are made up of mostly fat and that it's necessary for us to eat fat to function... and that when he eats the food I cook he doesn't get hungry between meals but that when he brings sandwiches to lunch, he comes home and searches for a snack immediately...

It was definitely cute/cool to see my husband jump in.
And definitely cool to have the knowledge to back me up.

Still don't think I changed our friend's mind even a little bit... he's very stubborn, as people are when they think they're doing everything by the book... but it was a little bit of fun.

Yard sale in the morning, super early.
