Mark
20 years ago I was told by my doctor that I had to lose weight due to health issues. Back then I was 23 and 5'10" and a whopping 325 pounds. I learned to cook for myself and I started to exercise, mostly just running. In about a year I was down to 190 pounds and that when I discovered the gym, where I put on muscle and got really lean, most of my friends and family could hardly believe it....I couldn't believe it. I got really hurt in the gym one year and had to have my top rib on the left side of my body removed.
Just before I turned 40 I began to have issues with my stomach, constant bloating, my digestive system was a complete wreck. I went for an endoscopy, a colonoscopy and the doctors found nothing but my daily practice of running, lifting weight and taking yoga classes slowed down. Recently I have become a yoga instructor and I spend a lot of my time with yoga, but I discovered that I have a wheat allergy and I can't go anywhere near anything with gluten. I still have problems with my stomach although they are less, they are still there and still seem to control my life. As I eat well no carbs, no meat or chicken, but lots of fish, fruits, nuts and vegetables, and not sweets, I still have the same stomach problems. Is this about getting older or is it just that my body doesn't respond to the same things anymore. This is very confusing and painful.

I have heard of polyphasic sleep before, but I never really paid any attention to it. Recently one of my friends started following this sleep pattern.

I don't really care all that much, because I love myself some good long sleep (and the occasional lucid dreaming that Mark mentioned in a past weekend links is always welcomed)

but he started a blog and is telling all my other friends and acquaintances how amazing and beneficial it is for you, but it seems off to me.

I certainly won't ever sleep like this, but it is like talking nutrition with someone, there are plenty of resources on the internet to support his stance as there are mine.

Any thoughts?

I am a very healthy 27 year old female - and I am 7 weeks pregnant. I have been struggling with the decision whether or not to get the Swine Flu vaccine. Of course I am in a supposed "high risk" category for flu infection, which I have been told over and over could kill me or end my pregnancy. My issue with the vaccine is - Squalene - it is an adjuvant to the H1N1 vaccine to help deliver the vaccine into the immune system. While Squalene is naturally produced by the human body - I believe it is harvested from sharks as well?- some doctors believe that when it is introduced into the human body through injection, the body is now reprogrammed to fight Squalene - naturally produced or not. Squalene is also found in the controversial anthrax vaccine which is still considered experimental on military personnel and has been linked to Gulf War Syndrome, autoimmune disease and arthritis.
It is described on the World Association for Vaccine Education website as "Too dangerous for human use, Squalene is not licensed for use in the United States. Oil adjuvants like squalene have been ordinarily used to inflict diseases in animals – for experimentation and study".
It reduces the amount of vaccine needed per dose .. Thus making the drug company’s alot more money. I would hate to make a rash decision based on fear that might have adverse lifetime effects on myself or my baby. But is it worth the possible risk for the “protection”?
Help!

Why doesn’t eating and exercising Primal seem to work for me? Am I doomed to be skinny fat?

Here’s my background: I’ve been eating primal for over eight years. Seriously. During these eight years I was moderately active (walks, some sprints that practically killed me, some weights), ate low carb everyday with very little cheating (only occasional splurges – under 1x per month, if that, and hardly ever in the 200+ carb range for more than a day), and even mixed in some intermittent fasting. I was lucky enough to marry a caveman – he’s the one who has taught me the beauty of eating and living Primal.

I eat Primal 1) because it keeps me skinny, 2) it totally makes sense to do so, and 2) I feel awesome when I’m “in the cave.”

Last year I was lucky enough to be involved in a medical research program for a condition I have called POTS, which pretty much has made me exercise intolerant all my life. Until recently, I had never run 100ft in my life. During testing it was determined that my heart is 1/3rd smaller than other women my stature. My cardiac output and lung capacity were woefully low. As you can imagine, this contributed significantly to my past exercise intolerance!

Here’s the deal, though, and how it relates to eating Primal – which, according to Mark’s book, contributes about 80% to body composition. I was underwater-weighed as part of the study to determine my body fat percentage. I was a whopping 30%+. I’m 5’ 7” and, at the time, weighed around 135lbs. After going through a four-month exercise program to increase my cardiac output and stamina as part of the medical study, I weighed around 132lbs and was still a whopping 30%+. Granted, the exercise program was not Primal, but it jump started my whole exercise life and helped build an aerobic base. I can now do things I’ve only dreamed of before.

Since this time (last December), I have stepped up my exercise (recently joined a boot camp to further increase my aerobic base so I can go 100% Primal in three weeks), followed Primal eating (under 100 carbs a day), done intermittent fasting, drastically watched my cheating, I don’t eat nuts or a lot of fruit…and I'm still 30%+.

What gives? What the hell am I doing wrong???

My legs are always super dry, and I used to think it was from either poor nutrition or dehydration. But having been primal for the past 5 months or so I know my nutrition is pretty good. And I've been drinking like a camel lately, my pee is even clear, yet my legs have gotten even drier. They're never as dry after I shave, since it exfoliates them, but why would I be shedding so much? It doesn't seem very healthy and it worries me. I don't use lotion or anything, I'm au naturelle. I would really appreciate any knowledge anyone may have on this! Thanks!

I recently traveled for 3 weeks through the south of Argentina by bus (+3,000km mostly on overnight or all-day buses) and the start of the trip was good and paleo -- i survived mostly on canned tuna, hard boiled eggs and my homemade trail mix but as the trip progressed with other travelers (non paleo) it became harder to stay paleo without being a pain in the ass to the majority. Any suggestions for traveling and staying paleo if you aren't eating out at restaurants (with the ability to choose your own dish) and you are sharing/cooking meals with lots of non-paleo carb monsters? (pasta, big bread sandwiches, chips, cookies and crackers). I'm talking backpacker traveling on-the-cheap paleo options. Options that I can carry with me on the bus that can last at least 1-2 days out of the fridge would be ideal.

Thanks for the input!

My wife and I have elected not to immunize our daughters by the use of vaccines. Too many recent horror stories that continue to raise our awareness of just how scary the medical establishment can be.

An example would be digging into the recent problems with the HPV vaccine that they advertise on television for young teen girls. This vaccine was never tested on humans on a large scale until it was released to the general public.

The recent plans to immunize hundreds of millions of people worldwide against H1N1 is also a concern. Roughly 35,000 people die each year in the United States from the flu (mostly the elderly). The powers-that-be are claiming that the "swine flu" will claim 90,000. To me, this is a depressing number, but I do not feel it justifies injecting millions and millions of people with a known cocktail of untested vaccine, mercury, thermisol, and squaline.

How would Grok respond to the idea of being injected with a virus in order to potentially increase his immune response to similar viruses in the future?

Hi Everyone,
I have been trying hard to adopt the Primal Lifestyle and I love it. I especially LOVE sprinting and lifting heavy things. I have developed knee pain (mainly walking down stairs and after sitting - although it does hurt a little to run) and went to an ortho guy to make sure I'm not hurting my knees. He explained my knees look good but it appears the problem is over-developed quads and under-developed hamstring muscles. Did this happen to Grok? Other Grokettes? Any suggestions on a good balancing exercise/plan for me? Thank you!

I was amazed while reading PB that Mark also had his finger joints start hurting when he was in his early 40's. The same thing happened to me a little over a year ago. I will be 44 in November. Every time I stop carbohydrates, most of the pain goes away. I experimented several times and each time brought the same results. No grains, no pain. So now I am doing my best to be Primal but at times it can be difficult with a 3 and 6 y/o in the house. This last time that I ended up eating carbs was at a football party and it is taking longer for pain to subside. Any suggestions on supplements to ease this up a bit?

Is IF safe for non-diabetic hypoglycemia? I'm talking about hypoglycemics who have low blood sugar as a result of insulin resistance/hyperinsulinism, not hypoglycemia as a result of being a diabetic who injected too much insulin. It would seem logical to me that IF would help the IR in the long-term, but may be harmful in practice.

For me it was using my "move slowly" time for a walk on my local trail in my FF's. On my walk I spent some time clearing fallen branches, small trees, and rocks from the trail to make it more passable. I also filled a bag with trash. No one may ever notice, but it made me glad.

My vegan friend is coming to visit me next month. We both love to cook, and I really want to cook super yummy meals for her while she is here. However, I couldn't imagine two more opposite diets. Yes, we overlap in veggies and nuts (although I like to cook my veggies in butter or bacon fat usually!). I guess I will have to use olive oil and make meals where I simply replace our meat with tofu for her. Does anyone know any yummy vegan-primal hybrid/crossover recipes?

Also, any links to articles I should read before she comes over would be great. I have heard of the Vegetarian Myth and plan on reading that, but anything else? I don't want to challenge her vegan ways, but I want to be ready to defend any possible debates that might arise.

I'm now down to 105 and people say I look too thin (I do). When I hit 112 pounds I began trying to increase fatty fish, nut, etc. consumption to keep from losing (or even gain a few) but I am now down to 105. This is definitely not a homeostasis for me. Anyone else going through this?

Dear Mark,
I recently met up with a friend that I hadn’t seen in over 6 months. I told her that I have basically been following a Pelo diet for the past 5 weeks. She responded that I must have type O blood. She is one of those chronically rotund vegetarians that suffers from low energy at times. Her acupuncturist suggested that she eat according to her blood type. She was a nervous wreak praying that she wasn’t an O. What is your take on blood types and diet?

Thanks,

Eric

I have been so superbly dedicated to my Primal eating habits, and have been losing fat rapidly, and feeling great until...

I was foiled by a pile of gorgonzola mashed potatoes at a restaurant last night! Usually I could order something with mashed potatoes and leave them no problemo. My pork chop was perfect, the balsamic poached pears accompanying it were delicious, and I totally ignored the bread basket, but something made me taste the potatoes.

Apparently I am powerless over these particular potatoes because I promptly devoured them all...except of course for leaving one good sized bite on the plate to not look like a total glutton in front of my date.

Grrrr.....

I've posted before about my situation but have more info to add so am posting again as per Mark's suggestion yesterday. Hoping you generous PBers have ideas!

I'm a 47 yr old perimenopausal woman who started the PB in April. I have steadily gained weight- went from 154 to 168lbs! Only gained 1 lb muscle per recent body comp. I was vegetarian for 20 yrs (but started eating fish 10 yrs ago). I went off bc pills 3 yrs ago. I have hypothyroidism (finally diagnosed but do NOT have Hashi's/Celiac/low coristisol/adrenal fatigue. In fact, recent labs indicate excellent health. My prob: weight gain (fat) and very low testosterone (despite my routine outlined below).

My supplements & meds: have an ND & holistic MD who have me on natural desiccated thyroid (Armour) for 2 mos for the hypo. Am slowly increasing the dose (know all about the shortage & FDA debacle; am able to get mine thru Canada) My ND has me on Designs for Health supplements- zinc, fish oil, raw milk whey protein, metabolic synergy, vit d, thyroid synergy, DIM, and now DHEA in hopes that will help with the weight & testosterone though I'm doubtful (nothing seems to help!) I have a Buddha belly, which is typical of being estrogen dominant & insulin resistant which I am.
My diet: all food is whole, local, seasonal, organic where possible. I shop at Farmers Markets, Whole Foods, Trader Joe's etc
Typical day:
bfast is 2 eggs or 1 egg & 2 whites, sautéed zucchini, 6oz lean turkey sausage, salsa, 1 TBS goat cheese, handful of almonds, assam tea w/ splash of half & half. Cooked in EVCoco oil.
lunch is: 6 oz protein (poached chix, grilled salmon, etc) on greens w/ toms, cukes, avo w/EVOO & lemon juice followed by herbal tea.
dinner: same as lunch, but will add steamed/sautéed veggies too (low carb). After dinner sometimes a square of dk choco, or handful of nuts.
snacks: before workout, a Designs for Health Paelo Bar or 1/2 of a hi protein Greens + Protein bar (not exactly primal but I eat bfast at 7am & lunch at 3pm so I need at snack around 11 am). I workout at 12:30-1:30pm usally. After my workout I have a homemade whey protein smoothie (no fat) as per my doc.
My workout: I have a personal trainer who customizes a 6 week routine. He's a Paleo/PB fan- so there's lots of bodybuilding & compound moves. Weights= 3x week (M,W,F). Cardio is tabata sprints 2x week, recovery run 1x week (T,TH,S) . Yoga on Sunday. Workouts 45 mins or less. Yoga= 2 hrs. Have been exercising regularly since the 80s. Until recently, did spin 3-4 x week plus classes- boot camp, pilates, body conditioning etc at my local gym.
Any suggestions to help me lose weight welcome. I've done body comp tests & my resting metabolic expenditure is 1500 cals! I also have a very hearty appetite, which has been quelled somewhat by eating lots o' protein. But still...eating less, exercising primally has not made much difference. Help before I give up & revert back to eating rice & bean burritos, bread, oatmeal & tofu!

I've read everything about the sun here on MDA. I get that sun exposure (in moderation) is good and healthy for us. But what about wrinkles? Does the sun cause aging of the skin, even if you never get burned, or sunbath for hours?

Also see this forum, where they discuss our dear Mark's "aging skin" because of his love for sun exposure:

I have started eating all fruits, vegetables, meat, eggs and nuts for 2 weeks. I am getting discouraged as I have only lost 3 lbs. I have not had any starches, breads, grains and sugars since day one. I have just been going off the website but ordered the book just the other day. Any advice for me to keep me going?

Has anyone noticed an increase in what some people call "fidgeting" and what researchers tend to call "restless movement" since you went Primal? I can't seem to stop moving, even though I still spend a good portion of my time sitting. My legs are in constant motion! I guess I have so much energy that I have to burn it off somehow, even though I also work out every morning. Anyone else noticed this?

The reason that I thought of it is that some research was done showing that lean people tend to fidget more and obese people tend to fidget less (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A41897-2005Jan27.html). The speculation was that some hormone causes obese people to not want to move around and lean people to move around, but I thought, "what if it's simpler than that and the difference is in energy levels?" Lean people would tend to have higher energy levels than obese people, right? So if diet is what drives our energy levels, wouldn't it be people who are eating closer to the Primal style that would have more energy and thus be more fidgety?

Had a job yesterday shooting a health fair at a rural hospital. They would bring people through for a series of tests and then consult them at the end. I listened to them tell these poor folks to eat a low fat/high carb diet. Also to limit their sugar intake while offering cc cookies, rice k. treats and lemonade to everyone in the room. Also... literally hundreds and hundreds of cigarettes littering the hospital front. WTF?
