dr mickey g on "Iodine & Healthy Thyroid Function part 1"

I started going off on an Iodine tangent on another post, so I thought I'd move some of the info over here for anyone interested in this most-important element, and the role it plays in maintaining healthy thyroid function, and by virtue of that, a healthy metabolism.

Google "conditions treated with iodine" and you'll find that it's used to treat everything from ADD and headaches to brain fog, "zombification", low IQ, depression, and chronic fatigue.

The reason? Iodine is full for the thyroid gland, and the thyroid gland, along with the adrenal glands, play an important physiological role in the prevention of the aforementioned conditions. Together the thyroid and adrenals are the two biggest energy-producing glands in the human body, and unlocking their potential is a key component to attaining vibrancy and health.

Properties of Iodine include: Production of thyroid hormones*, Antiseptic to bacteria, viruses and fungus, Anti parasitic, Anti fibrotic and cancer, Mucolytic agent, Alkalizing agent, Triggers apoptosis, Chemical and biological detoxifier, Anti allergic

*Functions of Thyroid Hormones include:
Neurological development and function, Increases all hormone receptor sensitivity, Regulates metabolism, Digestion, Oxygen consumption, Heat & energy production, Mobilizes fat –release of fatty acids from adipose tissue

Interesting how Conventional Wisdom eschewed its use back in the day, claiming we could get our daily requirement through the consumption of Iodized salt alone. Sure you can get your 'daily requirement' that way--if all you're interested in is preventing goiter! If you're at all interested in optimum health and vitality, then you're going to need to explore other avenues of Iodine intake in your diet.

Every cell in the body contains and uses Iodine.
The Thyroid contains the most iodine needs 6 mg iodide per day. Breast tissue contains the 2nd most iodine needs 5 mg iodine per day. Other glands and tissue combined need 2 mg iodine/iodide per day. Other tissues requiring iodine include: Ovaries
Salivary glands, Parotid glands (your body's first line of defense against Heavy Metal Toxicity), Pancreas, Cerebral spinal fluids, Brain, Stomach
Epithelial tissue, Lacrimal glands -Tear ducts, WBC

Iodine is required for all of your body's symporter systems to function optimally.

According to Dr. Royal Lee, founder of Standard Process: “We have always held that deficiency of minerals from a metabolic standpoint was more often due to the inability to assimilate because of vitamin
deficiency than because of actual dietary lack. Not
that such dietary shortage does not frequently occur,
but that in the great majority of cases it is the vitamin deficiency that makes the shortage apparent.
A good illustration is the case of iodine deficiency
in goiter, where the primary cause is a vitamin B and
C deficiency, necessitating a higher intake of iodine
to prevent trouble, the use of B and C concentrates
being a far more satisfactory remedy than iodine
after the condition has developed.”
Royal Lee; Vitamin News;Vol. 3, No. 7; June 15, 1935

It takes a severe Iodine deficiency to cause goiter, and usually a contributing factor like Chlorine exposure either in your home water supply or due to chronic exposure to chlorinated swimming pools or cleaning products. Chlorine actually displaces Iodine from cells in the thyroid gland as they compete for the same binding sites. This occurs due to their similar valence electron availablity (see below link for periodic table of elements), with Chlorine displacing Iodine because Chlorine has a lower molecular weight than Iodine, so apparently the body prefers that more.

Those who think they may be being exposed to chlorine in the municipal water supply should not only consider adding a faucet filter, but a showerhead filter as well--especially if you like to take long, hot showers like my wife does. That warm water open your pores right up, and if there's chlorine in your water it will get right into your body and negatively affect the thyroid gland.

Iodine is food for the thyroid gland, and keeps it healthy. Iodine also has extremely powerful antiseptic properties. All of the blood in the body passes through the thyroid gland every 17 minutes where--if Iodine levels are sufficient--it gets exposed to, and sanitized by, Iodine, a most potent bacterial, fungal, viral, and parasitic killer.

Just read the book and it makes so much sense!
I was recently tested and as I long suspected am allergic to gluten, dairy, and eggs, (also avocados and almonds?) I'm not allergic to any meats. Problem is I have been a vegetarian for many years. Have been eating a little meat now and it makes me feel nauseated and heavy. Also have basic gross out that I am eating a cow, pig, etc. Anyone else have these problems and/or suggestions? How about any alternative non-dairy, non-meat protein sources?
Help and thanks!

Feeling a little like my first day of college - excited, so much to look at and read, not sure where to go and know I'm going to forget something.
I stumbled across MDA while looking for ways of eating that could help IBS. I have suffered with IBS all my life and now in my 40's I've added high blood pressure and low blood sugar to the mix along with an irregular heart beat that I'm on meds for as well as for the high bp.
Last night I cleaned out the cubbords and my husband told me this morning that I kept talking in my sleep last night saying that I had to go to the grocery store.
This is how day one has been so far

Day 1
Breakfast
1 hardboiled egg and one apple (free range, organic)
tea - unsweet, decaf

Lunch
grilled fish

I think supper is going to be a steak

Steve on "semmelweis, stupidity, and going Gordon Ramsay"

I think this week's topic on semmelwise was really interesting with loads of great points.

One that came up that I want to tackle is that of personal choice and getting into conflict. I think that western society has gone way overboard with tollerance. It is a great catastrophy that humans are the only creatures on this planet that have no natural predators, the great circle of life the weeding out of the weak and the stupid does not happen to us as it happens to every other living thing on this planet.

And so we have to listen to these people and we are taught to be tollerant. I think it's ok up to the point where you aren't affecting anyone but once you step over that boundary and start affecting other people's liberties it becomes a real problem and we should be standing up to those people who question the PB and make our point heard. The french are especially well know for this in the field of politics, they dont agree that stand up and do something about it.

Mark has written numerous posts where stupidities are so very present, like the one on grok tag, where children are now no longer able to compete against each other sometimes ending up with cuts and bruises, or how about the one talking about what you put into your body has the biggest impact on whether you are likely to get cancer, as opposed to other things like chemicals and the environment.

Why is it ok for someone to spend a lifetime eating crap like grains, or drinking drinks high in aspartame and then expect other people to cough up not only their medical expenses bill but also suffer increased premiums for themselves when they eat nothing but healthy diets and exercise regularly. Why is it ok for people to choose not to do anything at all with their lives and then sponge off the system to pay for everything for them, that doesn't just affect them, that affects everyone.

I love Gordon Ramsay, I think he has an amazing attitude when he's in the kitchen, he doesn't take crap from anyone and most importantly he gets things done. Perhaps when people ask us why we are primal we should not be afriad and lay it down for them and then follow it up with something like "oh and btw because of your sugar cravings I can't afford to put my kid through college, here's the bill"

For the past 8 years, I have rarely eaten more than 2 meals a day. However, I was eating a very carb-lifestyle with meat a once a week "luxury". I've since changed my diet over the past two months and am feeling great and a good 40 pounds have washed away with nary an effort. I've also been prescribing to a "Eat only when hungry" mentality, which still leaves me eating one twice a day or once a day depending on how active I was the day before. So, how would IF work for me? I've gone 24 hours without eating and as I do it more often, it feels less and less like a chore. I feel like I could go even longer, but am afraid of if that would have a negative impact on my weight loss (which has started to stop coming off, or I am gaining muscle). I know that for many Native American tribes, you were not considered an adult until you were able to go for 4 days of fasting and were still healthy, but these were people who did not the weight problems our culture has.

About as far as the east is from the west, would be a face-off between Rip Esselstyn (not to mention his father, Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn, who wrote the book, "Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease") and Mark Sisson. Both seem to be exactly 180 degrees in the opposite direction of each other:

http://engine2diet.com/

Rip and his father are vegans and swear that consumption of meats and fats and oils is coating layer upon layer of plaque in our arteries that will eventually... well, no need to go further... I'm no preacher.

What I am is a gentile who needs to find a sensible way of living.

I would dearly love to be able to hear a debate -- whether video or even email, which I would pay money to hear -- between Rip Esselstyn, a vegan triathelete, and Mark Sisson.

So much of the primal lifestyle has been working for me, but there is so much more... maybe?... that I DON'T know. Things unseen, colorless, odorless, tasteless, dangers just over the horizon. I'm left to wonder: is this lifestyle I've chosen robbing Peter and one day he's going to punch me in the heart because I decided to give it all to Paul?

Hey all -

Heard a podcast from Mark, got intrigued, and picked up his book. Good stuff. I've eaten similarly in the past, but the PB way seems more sound--and I appreciate that it allows generous portions of fruits and vegetables.

Question to all of you PB'ers, though: Did you find you got tired when you first started going Primal? I've been eating totally Primal for five days now--like the routine, and generally I feel MUCH better--but today I tried to lift weights and just felt too tired to do it.

Could it be that my body hasn't yet grown accustomed to burning fat efficiently? Will this fatigue issue go away?

Appreciate any insight you long-timers might share!

Thanks.

Dear Mark,

I decided to sleep on the floor yesterday, wrapped in my comforter. I've camped a fair amount in my life and so am no stranger to uncomfortable surfaces; sleeping on the floor didn't seem to cause any problems for me this morning, but I do have a good mattress and wonder if I'd be crazy to stop taking advantage of it.

Grok obviously did not sleep on memory foam or feather beds, but is curling up on the carpet without a pillow taking primal life too far?

It would be really interesting to hear from a woman who went through a primal pregnancy, from start to finish! How did she adjust her diet and exercise over the course of the pregnancy? If she'd had a non-primal pregnancy before, did she notice any benefits? And of course, how much weight did she gain, and how hard was it to lose her pregnancy weight postpartum?

Since I eat 80g to 130g of protein a day, I wonder if this does lower my testosterone level?

Vibrant Elders:

I'm 54 years old, but I've made every mistake in the book. I've been both a 240 lb. couch potato, and a 140 lb. overtrained cardio machine, which truly broke me.

Now I'm following the Primal Blueprint to bring myself back to health, and I wonder if you would address the very different journey an older, injured person might take. In terms of Grok (and Grokette), what can a Primal Elder aspire to? How would an older or injured Grok/ette heal themselves? What, if anything, do we need to recover and rejuvenate? How might our journey differ from a youthful Grok? How do we take the Blueprint and modify it?

Most of the regular posters on the Forum seem to be young-ish, I would love to hear more about thriving or recovering older folks following the Blueprint.

Thank you so much for all your fine work, Mark. After less than a week on the Primal Blueprint, I feel better than I have in years, and I'm hopeful for the first time since having my spinal fusions two years ago that there *is* a way back to healthy life.

Thank you!!!

i posted this question as a comment on mark's salad posting but realized it was from a year ago so i'm not sure it will get noticed.

in that posting, 1 of the salads contained snow peas and the other green beans. i have since done further digging on the site and found many other recipes that call for green beans or peas, including mark's video where he makes his 2 minute salad that he eats every day.

i am very confused because i thought these were legumes and to be avoided. can someone clarify? can i go back to eating these two foods? can they be considered vegetable options [even though i know they are legumes]?

Mark,

First and foremost I'm a huge believer in the barefoot lifestyle for those who can tolerate it, and I'm glad you threw in the "do it gradually' caveat.

As chiropractors we're taught that faulty biomechanics of the feet lead to pelvic instability. Because the pelvis is the foundation for the entire spine this biomechanical unsoundness eventually leads to spinal misalignment.

In chiropractic school we're taught to stabilize the feet with custom made orthotics, and the company Foot Levelers had a big presence in the clinical setting at my school. I didn't get in to prescribing orthotics until my 3rd year in practice, and in general don't advocate their use.

There are some cases with patients who just plain need them. Can't walk without them. Can barely stand without their orthotics for more than a few minutes before experiencing terrific back and pelvic pain.

I suppose this further proves the idea that we are all unique individuals. Every body's body is different. We are not like cars. If you're a mechanic and you can fix a 1992 Chevy Cavalier then you can fix ANY 1992 Chevy Cavalier. If I'm a doctor and I can fix someone that was born in 1992 that doesn't mean I can fix EVERYONE that was born in 1992.

That's why doctors get paid more than mechanics, though.

Anyways I digress from my initial point. Just a few comments on some of your statements from today's Barefoot article and how they might tie in to natural selection:

"There are objective truths out there, and the objective truth is that most people aren’t born with genetically defective feet."

True. Thousands of years ago those that were bron with defective feet wouldn't have survived long enough to reproduce without family members to take care of their survival needs.

Sidenote: From a Chinese Medicine perspective, the arches in the feet may flatten due to issues with the small intestine and/or colon, as the reflex points for these organs lie in the heart of the longitudinal arches of the feet. See link below for a foot reflexology chart to see if YOUR foot pain may be stemming from an organ:

http://www.thaiwaysmagazine.com/thai_article/2221_foot_reflexology/foot_reflexology_001.gif

"Everyone’s imperfect, sure, but for the most part we’ve all got the same basic equipment with the same basic biomechanics working under the hood. Unless you have a birth defect, no one is born with feet that “won’t work right” or that “require shoes”. The flat footed (no arch) argument doesn’t stand up as an excuse, except when you’ve already spent a lifetime coddling your feet in supportive casts."

See this is what I love about Mark--he doesnt' hold back! I couldn't agree more, and it's unfortunate that modern life seems to promote such an UnGroklike Lifestyle that promotes the degeneration of our feet. In ancient times our feet were in direct contact with the Earth. We felt the pulse of the Earth in our feet and felt it's energy rise up and fill our bodies. And we respected the Earth a lot more back then, too. Hmmm...

To this day the capoeiristas de Brasil still play barefoot. See youtube video below for a great game:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9vvo5p4Ztrs

"A cautionary word that anyone transitioning to a barefoot lifestyle should take it VERY easy at first."

Grok on, brother.

Y0!
I'm new to the online journal what-nots, but I've been in and out of health commitments for a few years now. I saw this site however, and it just seemed to relate.

I'm an 18 year old student, so my schedule is all but consistent (like my diet). I try to eat more thoughtfully, but with my budget those cheap grease meals are so much more appealing, and my late nights always end with a full stomach.

I'm 5'8" and 180pounds and I simply want a more energized and healthy body. I always find myself taking naps after school and completely throwing off my sleep schedule, and I'm sure my attitude could improve if I wasn't always so tired.

Anyway, here's a couple goals for this month
- No soda (or other sugar infestations)
- Glass of water with every meal
- No food after 9P.M.

My legs are always super dry, and I used to think it was from either poor nutrition or dehydration. But having been primal for the past 5 months or so I know my nutrition is pretty good. And I've been drinking like a camel lately, my pee is even clear, yet my legs have gotten even drier. They're never as dry after I shave, since it exfoliates them, but why would I be shedding so much? It doesn't seem very healthy and it worries me. I don't use lotion or anything, I'm au naturelle. I would really appreciate any knowledge anyone may have on this! Thanks!

I have heard of polyphasic sleep before, but I never really paid any attention to it. Recently one of my friends started following this sleep pattern.

I don't really care all that much, because I love myself some good long sleep (and the occasional lucid dreaming that Mark mentioned in a past weekend links is always welcomed)

but he started a blog and is telling all my other friends and acquaintances how amazing and beneficial it is for you, but it seems off to me.

I certainly won't ever sleep like this, but it is like talking nutrition with someone, there are plenty of resources on the internet to support his stance as there are mine.

Any thoughts?

I know that having a workout routine is an important part of the Primal Blueprint. I am a 54-year-old female, 5'6", 227 pounds, in terrible physical condition.

Four months ago when I started PB, I had extremely painful plantar fasciitis and I was in the middle phase of frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis) on the right side. Now, I've lost 20 pounds, the plantar fasciitis is a distant memory, and my shoulder is well on its way to healing. I can actually move in my sleep without waking up. I also have a lot more energy, to the point that I can skip down a few steps and hurry down the sidewalk, which is an unusual feeling for me. I'd like to start a workout routine, but I have no idea where to begin. I think I'm not alone in my dilemma.

So, Mark, how about some help for people like me? I get discouraged looking at workout programs like P90X, as I know it would have to be renamed something like P450X for me to even have a hope of accomplishing it. I can't do any of the beginning moves, and I'm fearful of hurting myself. I already walk a lot, about 3 miles a day, and in the summer I do heavy work in my yard and large garden. But in the winter, I get no exercise beyond the walking. I have room in my basement to do exercises.

Where do I start? My right arm is still quite limited, but working it lightly is good. Please provide some pointers for me and others who need to start from the very bottom. If there's a good program that you can recommend, please do.
Thank you so much,
Sharon

I am a very healthy 27 year old female - and I am 7 weeks pregnant. I have been struggling with the decision whether or not to get the Swine Flu vaccine. Of course I am in a supposed "high risk" category for flu infection, which I have been told over and over could kill me or end my pregnancy. My issue with the vaccine is - Squalene - it is an adjuvant to the H1N1 vaccine to help deliver the vaccine into the immune system. While Squalene is naturally produced by the human body - I believe it is harvested from sharks as well?- some doctors believe that when it is introduced into the human body through injection, the body is now reprogrammed to fight Squalene - naturally produced or not. Squalene is also found in the controversial anthrax vaccine which is still considered experimental on military personnel and has been linked to Gulf War Syndrome, autoimmune disease and arthritis.
It is described on the World Association for Vaccine Education website as "Too dangerous for human use, Squalene is not licensed for use in the United States. Oil adjuvants like squalene have been ordinarily used to inflict diseases in animals – for experimentation and study".
It reduces the amount of vaccine needed per dose .. Thus making the drug company’s alot more money. I would hate to make a rash decision based on fear that might have adverse lifetime effects on myself or my baby. But is it worth the possible risk for the “protection”?
Help!

This thread had some responses that got me thinking. Several people said that they have not fared as well on the Primal Blueprint as others. They have either gained weight or they are feeling horrible on this way of life.

Are there people who actually have adapted to grains, however far and few between they might be?

Of course people should learn to listen to their bodies, which I feel is what Mark encourages, not only through the book, but through MDA. PB is a set of guidelines that one needs to experiment, but what if you are like the OP, or someone else who has tried variations of this and are still not faring well? Is the PB not the guidelines they need to follow?

This guys says a lot of things that go along with what Mark says, and like other people, he says stuff that doesn't agree with what Mark says. The one thing I am interested in is what he says about calories. He says that they don't matter because the way we figure out calories is by burning them which is way more simple than how our body processes food. If you want to watch the whole thing, it's about an hour long. What do you guys think? And Mark, I would love to hear what you have to say too.

Ok. I've been debating whether to post this or not. My wife doesn't know.

I started PB about three weeks ago. I love it. After the "carb-flu" I feel energetic and awake all day and I've lost about 10 pounds. I feel great!

I've also noticed more...uhhhh...ummmmmmm....cravings for certain things, i.e. sex (and bacon for some reason). I feel my libido has increased and was wondering if it has to do with hormone changes because of the diet change.

Or is it just because my body is just more "in tune" because of my lifestyle change.

Has anyone else experienced this? Don't be shy now!

Inspired by Mark's recent post (Fasting Makes You Active) and its many comments, I tried a mini-IF today. Dinner last night was at about 6:30, and I skipped breakfast and ate lunch at 12:00. I also had a cup of coffee with whole milk at 9:00. My fasting period was 17.5 hours. Is that enough to have any benefit? It was easy, I was pretty hungry by noon but nothing I couldn't handle. However, I slept late, so it wasn't that many awake hours without food.

On weekdays I leave the house at 6:20, usually (but not always) have a 15-minute break somewhere around 9 or 10, then a 30-minute lunch break around 11 or 12. I'm scared to begin my workday without something in my belly, not knowing exactly when I would get a chance to eat something or how I would function at work on an empty stomach. I know there are plenty of people who do it, but I'm still nervous about it! There are days that my workday is lighter and I can predict that I will certainly get a morning break. Maybe I will try it one of those days first and see how it goes.

How much will the coffee with milk affect the IF? Going a morning without food is one thing, but without coffee??? *shudder*

Sooooo... I'm confused. If you eat more lean mean (less saturated fat) you should eat more fruit vs. the PB you eat more saturated fats and less fruit?
