You seem to have the answers in front of you (for your gut issues) but are not quite grasping them! The Gluten issue is huge, but to really see gains, try an elimination diet for a time (2, 3 months?) of ALL grains/legumes and starchy stuff. If Gluten is an issue, the fiber and carbs in any rice, beans, corn, soy and assorted products may also be. Easy to test, just rule it all out for a time.

And you say you "eat no carbs" but list off lots of fruits, nuts and vegetables... well, depends on the veggies you eat (potatoes, yams, etc are very carb rich), but certainly fruit and nuts are VERY carb rich. Take a second look at what you are eating there. Modern fruit is just candy from a tree. Nuts are high in Omega 6 oils, and are quite carby and fibrous, this could be a lot of your gut issues.

And you eat "no meat or chicken"? why not!? That's good nutrient dense food! Get some meat, eggs, fish, fowl as the basis of your intake.

Take a look at the "paleo" nutritional plan, something along these lines:

http://www.paleonu.com/get-started/

or this simple explanation:

http://www.tbkfitness.org/TBKdiet.html

And of course, buy the book "Primal Blueprint" and get on board with fixing yourself!

Mark
20 years ago I was told by my doctor that I had to lose weight due to health issues. Back then I was 23 and 5'10" and a whopping 325 pounds. I learned to cook for myself and I started to exercise, mostly just running. In about a year I was down to 190 pounds and that when I discovered the gym, where I put on muscle and got really lean, most of my friends and family could hardly believe it....I couldn't believe it. I got really hurt in the gym one year and had to have my top rib on the left side of my body removed.
Just before I turned 40 I began to have issues with my stomach, constant bloating, my digestive system was a complete wreck. I went for an endoscopy, a colonoscopy and the doctors found nothing but my daily practice of running, lifting weight and taking yoga classes slowed down. Recently I have become a yoga instructor and I spend a lot of my time with yoga, but I discovered that I have a wheat allergy and I can't go anywhere near anything with gluten. I still have problems with my stomach although they are less, they are still there and still seem to control my life. As I eat well no carbs, no meat or chicken, but lots of fish, fruits, nuts and vegetables, and not sweets, I still have the same stomach problems. Is this about getting older or is it just that my body doesn't respond to the same things anymore. This is very confusing and painful.

Mens health did a great article on this with one of their writers; he intermittent fasting and sleeping; said he functioned great. He stopped though with the reasoning that he had too much time. He would finish his work and end up watching T.V. for hours.

It's rumored that Einstein and some other great (non school educated) people of our time did this.

Im pretty sure I already do this on the weekends accidently and I don't know if it's the best idea haha...

Sounds like hell on a stick to me, BUT, my OH is self-employed and deals with people all over the world. That kind of sleeping behaviour is natural to her. And she seems to survive quite well on it. Never knew it had a name, though!

I've thought this through a lot and (my personal opinion here) I think the natural reason for this sort of sleep is due to the biological need to take care of infants. A newborn is supposed to sleep no more than four hours at most and generally they only go for two. The one friend I had who was already on a polyphasic schedule BEFORE having a kid adapted to the nighttime regimen his newborn required with no problem whatsoever. Those "hellish first three months" everyone else goes through he claimed flew right by and he had no loss of productivity or sour spells. His wife loved him for it because she'd pump during the day and he'd end up feeding their son at night. She got an entire night of rest every other night, he got to nap whenever he needed to, and they didn't have any issues bonding as a family due to lack of sleep.

My mom sleeps like this. I just don't get it. She'll sleep for 4 hours, get up and tinker around the house, take a nap for a couple hours, go to work, come home and tinker, then nap, wake up... you get the idea. I couldn't do that.

BigBeck,

I Googled this and found this link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polyphasic_sleep

Fascinating. I know a lot of cops and Security professionals (myself included) end up sleeping this way from time to time. Don't really think it's an ideal to strive for... but it works.

I have heard of polyphasic sleep before, but I never really paid any attention to it. Recently one of my friends started following this sleep pattern.

I don't really care all that much, because I love myself some good long sleep (and the occasional lucid dreaming that Mark mentioned in a past weekend links is always welcomed)

but he started a blog and is telling all my other friends and acquaintances how amazing and beneficial it is for you, but it seems off to me.

I certainly won't ever sleep like this, but it is like talking nutrition with someone, there are plenty of resources on the internet to support his stance as there are mine.

Any thoughts?

And here we all were on another thread thinking that the best thing that could happen to humanity's population explosion would be decline in numbers... perhaps those diseases were here for just that purpose, and having found our way around them, we have now cooked our own goose. ;)

Ok, that was somewhat tongue in cheek for anyone who can't tell, but I did find it rather ironic that on one thread we're discussing that less people is better and on another, we're worried about people dying.

Sam, that's not a theory, it's a hypothesis. A hypothesis is great, it's the starting point of science. The idea that vaccines cause childhood disorders was a valid hypothesis, just as the idea that AIDS was caused by drug use was a valid hypothesis at the time. The way a hypothesis becomes a theory is through thorough testing of both the hypothesis and the null-hypothesis (tests to try to disprove the hypothesis). Problem here is that study after study has disproved both of these hypotheses, therefore killing them in their tracks.

A hypothesis can be as sound as can be, but without evidence, it is not a theory and should be moved on from.

thanks for debating everyone. im going to make one more point and that will be it for me. if you post a follow up i will read but i will not respond. oddly enough, i got the swine flu! how bout that! after a good deal of raw garlic, raw cayenne pepper, green foods powder, fresh veg juice, soup with mineral rich broths (kombu, kilbasa, chicken + various veg), wild oregano drops every couple hours, 15000mg vit c/day, and nutrition lectures while lying on the couch, im feelin pretty good to go on the third day, today.

i just want to point out a theory on autism presented by carol simontacchi, a certified clinical nutritionist, specialist in neurodevelopmental disorders and other aspects of brain development, author of The Crazy Makers (a book about how processed food, additives, food colorings, excitotoxins, unkownchemicals, etc. affect childhood behavior).

this theory was explained in an interview on underground wellness radio recently - http://www.blogtalkradio.com/undergroundwellness (the discussion on vaccines is near the end, after about 50 minutes if youre interested, but the whole discussion is excellent)

as the brain of a fetus and burgeoning child develops, it goes through a number of important stages that have lasting impacts on that child's future. one stage might involve the development of motor coordination, or visual understanding, or the ability to speak. thats how brain development works: it is not a linear process; there are various stages of development going on at any one time.

important here is the fact that the blood brain barrier is not fully developed in children, and children with methylation (a form of detoxification) disorders are especially at risk. simontacchi's theory is that when substances known to impact the brain enter into the body, they will have an impact on the stage of development the brain is in. so if the brain is developing the ability to recognize faces when a disrupter is presented, that child might have difficulty recognizing faces in the future.

now, this could go for mercury (or other vaccines adjuvants: squalene, formaldehyde, aluminum, etc), or aspartame, or endocrine disrupters, or a number of other toxins.

simontacchi warns that because mercury is a heavy metal, it will sink to the bottom of the multi-dose vials the swine flu vaccine is being distributed in; if the vial is not shaken vigorously (she found evidence that it often wasnt) one kid is going to get all of the mercury. she found kids who tested off the charts for mercury post vaccines.

she also found kids who overnight went downhill after a vaccine. numerous case studies (which may be a better measure than epidemiological studies here) confirm this.

theres nothing to debate about this because i cant prove it, it's just a theory. take it or leave it. i think there are grounds for concern, especially when our babies are being given dozens and dozens of vaccines during infancy, oftentimes 5 or more in one day. we know for a fact vaccines carry risks; if you dont believe that, try getting your doctor to say that the vaccine he is giving you is 100% safe in writing.

thats all

take care everybody

I am deeply shocked and saddened at the level of irrationality present in this post's comments. (I am referring to the comment board, not this forum thread.) I seriously just read a response to one of my comments using the "discovery" of dinosaur footprints found alongside human footprints to refute my defense of the scientific method. I was then told:

Just look at how butthurt and hostile the people on your side of the argument have gotten just during the course of these comments.

I really don't understand. Most of the name-calling that I have witnessed in the course of the post's comments has been directed towards the "self-righteous, ignorant, intolerant" non-believers rather than from.

Religion was introduced into the conversation by the third post promoting young-Earth creationism. (Whether or not this was a Poe remains unknown as the poster has remained silent since.) Rightfully so, this comment was completely lambasted as indubitably false. However, because this represents a fundamental belief of many people, suddenly feelings were hurt and tempers were riled.

This is the problem with belief: because it is not based upon any evidence, any criticism of a belief threatens to erode its unsubstantiated foundations. This is, understandably, very uncomfortable for the believer. Presentation of facts which contradict the faithful edicts cause emotional distress and are construed as personal attacks. The issue becomes an emotional maelstrom as believers and non-believers alike resort to ad hominem attacks and impassioned responses.

Even though I have rambled on far beyond the realm of TL;DR I would like to make one more point. There seems to be a confusion between atheism and anti-theism. (I suppose the latter is sometimes called "militant atheism.") At its core, atheism represents a rejection of unsubstantiated belief systems, an insistence upon evidence, and a promotion of critical thinking and healthy skepticism. It does not claim that there is no god; rather, atheism simply does not accept the claim that there is a god based upon lack of evidence. Anti-theism, on the other hand, actively states that there is no god.

This is the fundamental difference: inactivity and activity. Atheism is inactive; it is simply a rejection of a belief system and does not actively make any claims about the nature of the universe. Anti-theism is active; it not only rejects a belief system (theism), it actively promotes the belief that there is no god.

Although it is an extremely well-worn analogy, consider the existence of fairies. Let's suppose that a belief in the existence of fairies is called "fairyism," and all believers in fairies are called "fairyists." However, because there is no evidence for fairies, you are hard-pressed to find anyone who actually believes in their existence. Therefore, the majority of people would reject fairyism and be labeled as afairyists.

Even though most of us (hopefully) do not accept the belief in fairies, is the label of "afairyist" truly relevant? Does it really make sense to define ourselves by what we don't believe in?

Although most people are afairyists, how many spend their time actively claiming that there are no fairies? Unless fairies are brought up in the course of conversation, how many people are likely to spout off an anti-fairy agenda? Probably not many. However, if the claim of fairies' existence is mentioned, most people will be provoked to then refute this claim and possibly lapse into anti-fairyism.

This is the mechanism by which atheists are construed as anti-theists. The constant interjection of theism into debate prompts the non-believer to assert their rejection of theism and, in the process, is often misunderstood as making an independent claim.

considering that most of modern science has its origins in Christians seeking to logically and scientifically explain God's creation, i find the fundy-atheist thing just irritating.

the whole 'omg there is DEFINIATELY NOT GAWD' is just ridic. the data doesn't dictate one way or the other whether the Christian God exists or not. a correct scientific response would be agnosticism, not rabid atheism and accusations that your brain musta fallen out if you're Christian and like math and science.

issac newton was working within a Christian intellectual tradition when he formulated much of what we understand to be modern physics. people forget so much of what religious faith contributed to science before the last 2-3 generations. people have such tiny, short memories. it's fascinating how so many really do have faith that everyone before the 60s was Just Plumb Dumb, when the scientific evidence is actually that our brains are 20 percent smaller since the dawn of neolithic eating, half of that an artifact of modern agriculture (the last century or so).

it is wonderfully strange how so many evolutionary rabid atheist primal/paleo types actually kinda believe those same paleo ancestors were just stupid but they are much smarter.

Thanks for those links. I never heard of Francis Pottenger or his famous cat study before. It was interesting to learn he was a contemporary of Weston Price!

To me, prima facie, the results demonstrate how potentially destructive an "unnatural" diet can be to an organisms health. One thing I wonder: could these (or have these) results be interpreted that raw meat is more beneficial for human health? Because one difference between cats and humans is that humans have been cooking food for a very long time (I think at least 100,000 years?) and cats never have...until humans started feeding it to them.

I don't want to sully you post by attaching ancillary ideas to it but what you said reminded me of a Ralph Waldo Emerson quote, "Foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds." I don't think any group of thought is immune to falling into 'foolish consistency'.

Ridgeback, all religious/spiritual people are not un-scientific. There are some who can grasp science and still hold fast to faith in something bigger than themselves. Yes, it is annoying to have people bring "peusdoscience" into a debate and expect it to be swallowed, but that doesn't mean those who do understand science have the right to be judgemental and bigotted.

I think mindless adherance to any group, whether it be religious, or otherwise is dangerous. Fundamentalism comes in many forms. I have encountered fundamentalist environmentalists, parenting fundamentalists, and even PRIMAL FUNDAMENTALISTS! :)

I guess I just see a difference in people who follow organized religion without questioning or thinking for themselves, and those who have found a spiritual path that they feel gives them some peace, grace and a greater compassion for others.

I think we should have respect for people's spirituality, and even atheism can be considered a type of spirituality. ;) Tolerance and respect shouldn't be too much to ask on a board with so many enlightened educated thinkers.

I am glad there is such a community of critical thinking people here... typically I am fighting a solo, uphill battle trying to reason against both CW and religious beliefs.

Mark's post beautifully illustrated my view on life and why there is no need for a god (or gods) in my life to find enrichment, meaning, or happiness.

I do believe we are naturally curious, and from that curiousness religion spawned to fill the unknowns. I also believe that at any given time there are things we will never fully understand and really have no need to understand (i.e. creation of the universe)

I think people that hold the creationist belief feel life is degraded by not being the center of the universe, not being the children of god. If they could simply grasp what Mark said, I think they could go on living and appreciating/enjoying life without their bibles and baby jesus.

I think that the later poster (citing Answers in Genesis as a website for "good science") is definitely not a Poe, though. Or maybe it is just the most elaborate Poe that I have ever seen, and I just wasted ten minutes of my life typing up a response, lol.

Shine, It could be. Sarcasm doesn't transmute through text very well. It is hard to determine what "just saying" signifies. If that was supposed to be the sarcastic qualifier I didn't interpret it as such.

You won't get huge muscles with heavy weightlifting unless you eat a lot so I wouldn't worry about that if you do. You really have to try to get big. Eating below maintenance and doing heavy low rep sets of bench, squat and deadlift will shed bodyfat off of you. It tricks your body into thinking you need the muscle more than the fat so it gets rid of it.
