No, not all animal fat is saturated. A little less than half of the fat in a steak (for example) is monounsaturated. Most of the rest is saturated, but there is a small amount of polyunsaturated as well.

My favorite cut, as an example -

i eat tons more in volume (leafy greens, other veg, nuts/berries & meat in moderate amounts). i used to be a packaged granola bar/protein bar queen. now that i've taken the time to prepare my food, my grocery bill went down $15 and i dropped 10lbs :)

as far as calories it varies...some days i only get up to 800 and other days i eat 1400cals (i'm 5'4 115lb)

Sweet potatoes and rice are really the only starches I eat. Great for bodybuilding.

I was asking about protein metabolism, and was directed towards this diagram http://www.elmhurst.edu/~chm/vchembook/images/590metabolism.gif

It's really helpful, in that you can see any of the three macronutrients can end up as fat (see all three arrows pointing to acetyl coA, which in itself "points" to fat creation as well as citric acid cycle) BUT it is far more likely to occur with some than with others.

@Anand Srivastava, I don't think we should always try and emulate "Grok". I don't think it's necessarily "better" to eat just two or three meals a day compared to five or six smaller ones...After all, "Grok" would definitely be snacking on berries/seeds or what have you on a hunting excursion...

But regardless, I do eat full meals...This morning I had 3 eggs, 2 slices of bacon, and 3 summer squashes sauted in butter...Could definitely eat two hours later! Usually I'll have 5-6oz. of meat and some vegetable in butter, which I would consider a "full meal". I think it may have something to do with my body composition, age and metabolism...I'm young, very slender, and have a lot of lean muscle mass. Perhaps I just burn through food quickly? :)

Insulin doesn't spike much when you eat primal snacks...Eating a carrot and some sunbutter isn't really going to be that detrimental..I'm not too worried about that, it's just almost obnoxious that I'm hungry so often. How do you feel when you finish a meal? Full, stuffed, or just satiated?

Consider these 2 facts:
* fat is very high in calories;
* the paleo/PB diet contains a lot more fat than veg, vegan, and CW diets.

Does this lead most people who are on the paleo/PB diet to consume less food?

Focus on Crossfit (http://www.crossfit.com) inspired workouts, lifting massive weight (no more than 5 reps to failure,) and run FAST at least once or twice a week. Combined with a clean diet, you will be guaranteed some kick butt changes. :)

My grandmothers never did.

But lest we all get teary eyed for a golden past existing only in our minds, remember than in those years they absolutely did not garden what we would call organically.

My mother and father were typical post-war "back to the land" types and they saw nothing wrong with DDT or chemical fertilizers. And prior to DDT, people saw nothing wrong with "'cides" made from lead, arsenic, copper, lye, and worse.

Then a lot of produce went into jars, often with lots of sugar.

I think I hear some bubbles popping......

Yeah, I seem to do ok with white rice too. But all other grains, even brown rice make me feel bloated and give me heartburn. Dr.Harris of PaNu says potato and white rice are ok if you must eat starch. I'm not endorsing grains, just saying if you're in a situation where you have to eat non-primal stuff, then white rice might be the lesser of the evils.

Raphael, save about 1C of the soaked water in the refrigerator and add it the the next time you soak brown rice. And when you keep doing this the phytase content in the water increases and helps neutralize the phytic acid in the rice. Read Stephen' blog for more info. I have a bottle of, hopefully phytase-rich, water in the refrigerator.

I can eat white rice with little consequence (other than some bloating/carb rush). High gluten grains are the ones that seem to give me stomach problems, though. If I continue to eat them, I usually have to go back to taking Tums or OTC heartburn meds on a regular basis.

I would take a look at some of the fasting threads from before. Ideally, it would not be as healthy for you to start off fasting. As animals do, we store our toxins in our fat. So when we start to burn fat, those toxins are released into our blood stream and let free to damage our body. Without healthy organ function, primalirly in the liver, there's going to be a lot of unnecessary damage being done. I defnitely would not start fasting for a few weeks or even longer; this needs to be about getting healthy and not losing the largest amount of weight the fastest.

If you decide to still go on with the fast, I would go out and buy a milk thistle supplement (liver support), and definitely still get your antioxidants and vitamins in.

When you get to that stage where you think you've tried everything, maybe it's time to look at hormones.
Prominence:
Estrogen Receptors- quads/glutes, lower abs
Androgen Receptors- chin, tricep/lower arms, chest
Insulin Receptors- "love handles", Sub-scapular
Cortisol Receptors-gut region
Signs of sluggish thyroid hormones or thyroid: mid axillary

So when I say the above I mean that fat is stored in these areas, and can be related to an imbalance or problem with the receptors.

@jess on the week days i can't really say since i'm beat from work most times. on the weekends, i eat a nice big breakfast and wait a couple hours and then have a killer workout. i usually don't eat again until dinner or i'll make a shake with almond milk, blueberries & an egg white or 2 to tide me over.

last night: rest :)
today: about to go for a run it's beautiful outside! somewhere in the 3-5mi range let's see how i'm feeling!

@Raphael You're right: starch is converted to glucose, which is stored in your muscles as glycogen, or as fat if your muscles are "full".

At least, that's my understanding...

as a young married couple who just bought their first house this year. sure, i'd love to buy all those $$ expensive goods but i live in a climate with 4 seasons!

in the summer time i support a local CSA which is great but in the winter months i buy frozen brocc/cauliflower/blueberries and in the produce aisle- non-organic greens, apples, oranges and squash. i adhere to a more seasonal eating approach simply because it's a lot more cost effective. i feel that in the long run this won't make me "suffer" compared to other PB followers eating organic.

Starch is converted into saturated fat? I thought it turned into glucose and used to replenish glycogen stores... can someone explain?

Hahah.. I'm not for grains at all - I make it part of my 20%. I'm just saying that if you want to eat grains, at least prepare it correctly. People in Asia eat rice all the time and they're generally much healthier than Westerners, so you can't go too wrong with rice. ;)

Ok enough.

@OnTheBayou Canola oil has a high smoke point. Unless I'm missing something, doesn't that cause canola oil to resist decomposition during cooking and digestion?

@AuH2Ogirl Hrmm, averaging 2500 calories each day is not enough? One day, I happened to eat 3500 calories, and man oh man, I was feeling like a beached whale.
