mstrudle on "Cold water bathing?"

I only take cold showers. Previously my home felt frigid at any temperature below 72 degrees; now I bike in shorts and a t-shirt on foggy days and I don't even heat the house anymore; just let nature do its work.

There is certainly something to be said about going primal in every aspect of your life. Many people are content to stick with diet, but if one were to use no shampoo, bathe only with cold water, go to sleep when the sun goes down, and sleep on a semi-hard surface without a pillow, then the benefits would probably increase greatly. There are obviously more aspects to a primal lifestyle (such as barefooting or eating dirt) that I haven't mentioned, but these ones come to mind as the easiest to transition to.

Idyllic... I still have a ways to go until I'm reaching that goal. There's still a lot to do. I mentioned in another thread, but I'm actually going ot start building my own house, the ultimate in DIY soon. And by "soon" I mean, I'm gathering the materials now to start doing it as cheaply as possible, but it could be another year before I lay the foundation. It's kinda strange for me to hear idyllic or things like "in the boonies" because I still have a computer, I still have a washing machine, it's not like the perception most people think when they hear I live off the grid.

Also, there is a lot of labour and expensive involved in the initial setup. A lot. That can be a real turnoff and stopping point for a lot of people. It stopped me from doing it for several years because I simply didn't want to cough up that much cash. But it has freed me from another life. Most parts of it have almost paid for themselves. The quality of life it's offered me has more than paid for itself a dozen times over. It isn't easy and there were days where I was spending all day in frustration and stress and getting very little sleep. The pay off for that is laziness now. But if that sounds attractive to you at all, I say, just jump in and go for it. Don't hem and haw about the money.

Btw, I only have 3/4ths of an acre, most of it is mixed vegetable/orchard/herb garden and part of that is getting sublet into my new house. So it's not even about buying a big place in the country. Sure, I'd want more space if I were to raise some animals which is a dream of mine, but for now, I think I'm doing a lot and more importantly I'm learning, so when I do finally leave here, I'll be better prepared for something like 5-10 acres.

I'd recommend bamboo for building, plus it grows very fast, some species can grow a foot a day. Not so much for burning, we burn mostly what falls down around here: redwood, pine, spruce, eucalyptus. Once in a while we get lucky to find some alder or oak, but not really.

I have to say, I've been enjoying my contrast showers quite a bit. I do pretty much as hazyjane just described.

I've heard about non-shivering thermogenesis increases from increased mitochondrial proton gradient uncoupling, increased production of glutathione (the primary endogenous antioxidant enzyme), as well as increased pain tolerance.

I can't vouch for my glutathione levels, but I used to get cold all the time and I'm now frequently comfortable under conditions that used to make me shiver. The pain tolerance is more difficult to say, but I do think it probably made me at least mentally more resistant to pain -- I completely split open both of my toes on a step this last fourth of July and it didn't make me do much more grit my teeth while my friend's aunt disinfected it, which would never have been the case before. Always tough to say with something as subjective as pain, though.

Molecular Grokologist on "Fruits (Fructose) and Biochemistry"

Ok, so glucose enters the liver, having been absorbed in the gut and sent through the hepatic portal vein. It might get converted to fructose or it might get shipped out to the bloodstream as plain old glucose.

If it gets turned into fructose (a necessary step in metabolism), it's got pretty much one way to go: toward becoming acetyl CoA right there in the liver. A teeny (and I mean really teeny)amount of the fructose gets pushed into a side pathway, the Pentose Phosphate Pathway, where it gets converted to a 5 carbon sugar and one of its protons is peeled off and stuck onto a molecule called NADPH that does all kinds of important chemistry. The amount of fructose that goes to Pentose Phosphate instead of down the main path is very tightly regulated because NADPH helps keep just the right amount of oxidation in the cell (too much breaks all kinds of helpful molecules and makes them useless and too little keeps some parts of the cell from talking to each other).

Almost all of it goes straight down a series of steps where it gets converted to acetyl CoA. This is where fat enters too, as two carbons at a time are chewed off of long fat chains and converted to acetyl CoA. From here, a small amount of acetyl CoA is siphoned off to be used in the synthesis of a number of molecules, cholesterol among them (more on this in a minute). All the rest of it goes through a series of changes in the Kreb's Cycle where the cell gets a bunch of energy.

Three acetyl CoA can be put together to make a molecule called HMG CoA. Statins block the next step, which is the reduction of HMG CoA. After that, lots of pathways branch out to produce things like cholesterol or ubiquinone (Coenzyme Q). So in blocking HMG CoA reductase (the enzyme that does this important step), you block cholesterol synthesis and tons of other things. It's a metabolic sledgehammer since it's just before a crucial branching point in these synthetic pathways.

The precursors lying around don't tend to cause major problems since they're not especially reactive and they break up into acetyl fragments (which can be reattached to coenzyme A to make acetyl CoA and metabolized for energy. The real problem is the fact that you're blocking molecules like ubiquinone (which makes sure that your mitochondria don't "fumble" electrons onto molecules which will then run around wrecking cellular machinery) and causing potential cholesterol shortages (or at least misallocations) which cause membrane stability issues, interfere with hormone synthesis (since testosterone, estrogen, vitamin D and many other hormones use cholesterol as a precursor), and other problems to boot.

All in all, the amount of cholesterol that actually gets made depends on a wide variety of factors that boil down to how much you need minus how much you absorb from your food. It's not hugely exact, so you end up with extra all the time, but it just gets secreted into your gut as bile salts (molecules which help break fats up into tiny globules so they have more surface area for your digestive enzymes to work on) and then reabsorbed only in the amounts that you need.

I'm not positive I covered all of your questions (or actually made myself clear, for that matter), so let me know. This is also rife with oversimplifications, too, so if you'd like intervening details filled in, I can fill in the missing steps.

I totally get what you're saying. I do have things I want to do, but there's a point where you realize it's not gonna happen and let it go!!

I'm actually hoping that after having kind of crap food he'll be glad to have good cooking. For the most part he could be primal, except for bread... and since I've cleaned out the house, he's stuck with what's here, LOL. We'll see though. I'm not going to force it, just hopefully make it so cool he won't notice!!

I don't think the book ever says consume them liberally. They should not be the bulk of your diet anyway. I consider them a snack and you shouldn't even feel the need to snack if you're "doing it right." Just sayin'!

It's my dream too. Probably won't really happen until retirement, but hopefully that'll be an early one.

I think that smart home design and placement can really limit how much energy you need.

If you're going to use wood for heat and/or cooking, check to see osage orange will grow in your area. It's like a miracle wood. Rot resistant so you can use it for fence posts. Gives more BTUs than any other wood when burned. It can be coppiced, so it's great for a woodlot. You can grow it as a hedge for livestock. Its wood is used to make the best bows (sorry, yew lovers).

I'd recommend subscriptions to Mother Earth News and Grit for everyone.

I'd recommend The Self-Sufficient Life and How to Live it, by John Seymour. Not the perfect book for everything, but it touches on enough subjects to get you started.

If you'd like to read about a community that I'd like to try to emulate some day, check out Gaviotas: A Village to Reinvent the World, by Alan Weisman.

Funny, this is giving me weird flashback-like moments. When I was a teenager, my folks decided to "get back to the land", and moved us to 2 sections of forest in northern BC. Was off the grid as a default, as there were no services (gas, hydro, etc) at that location at the time. This was in the early 80s. At the time, I considered this to be their "mid life crisis", but I'm now in the same age group (early 40s) as they were at the time...

I have memories of kerosine and propane lights, wood heat, an old fashioned wood cookstove, and a lot of manual labour. Had vegetable garden in summer, which was a short growing season in that area, so lots of canning and freezing of produce. Kept milk cows, some chickens, pigs, and raised a couple of lambs for meat at one point. Hunting for moose and deer, fishing, and a lot of cutting down trees and wood chopping.

At the time, remembering I was a teenager, I couldn't wait to leave. Looking back, there was certainly some satisfaction and peacefullness to that lifestyle. At this point, I can never see quite returning to that sort of isolation/independence (and would be far from the taste of my spouse, city born and raised!). Yet I do see the appeal of being off the grid, and like the idea of solar/geothermal, etc. Maybe I'll have my own "midlife crisis" of sorts after my own kids are gone??

I made it! I had one potato chip, that's as bad as it got. I took advantage of the anti-pasto platter - lots of salami, turkey, ham & cheese. I also had two chicken wings, no sauce. The only thing I drank was Coke Zero. Obviously, not completely Primal, but no grains! I'm proud of myself. I didn't even have any birthday cake OR any of the dessert I brought! Woo-hoo! Now I'm going to bed because I am exhausted!

This thread is such a relief to me! I was a little freaked out about my period, since it's being wacky right now, but it seems to be being wacky in the same way others are reporting!
I've always been very regular with shorter cycles (25-27 days, usually) that are very painful on the first day with IBS and sometimes clots. They usually last 5-6 days with the last day being spotting, basically.

Well, this one is totally different!
I spotted on day 28 and then stopped for a day and spotted one more day. Then I started my period on day 35- completely snuck up on me. No warning cramps and after it started, I had zero cramps/IBS (a miracle!!!) I'm so stoked that I had no pain (I had thought this was impossible after trying everything under the sun over the years without success!)

It started out light and then became a normal flow and the flow has been consistent every day (instead of waxing and waning throughout like usual) except I'm now on day 9 (!!!) and still flowing away and I've had a couple of gushes/clots come in the last few days (that used to only ever happen on days 1 and 2).

Maybe it's just my hormones readjusting (or maybe my uterus is cleaning house, LOL!) I could def. use some hormone adjustment after years of luteal phase defect!!!

Hello Minxxa, you and I have a lot in common...I'll be 42 next week, have 2 teenagers (boys, 13 & 14), and a military husband. Can most definitely relate to the stresses of his deployment and homecoming. However, I also know it from the other side, as I'm military too (7 months in Afghanistan in 2008 and I just returned home nearly 3 weeks ago from 6 weeks in Haiti). Don't worry about everything being perfect for his return, he'll not notice half of your efforts, if he's like most men! He'll likely be happy enough just being home and with you.

In the meantime, also try and enjoy the next week and a half, his return can throw an unexpected curve in your primal efforts. I recall when mine returned from deployment a few years ago, I had been on a fairly regimented food and workout routine (more CW than primal then), and it quickly reverted to old habits after the homecoming. You'll need to remain diligent and dedicated.

I'm looking forward to hearing how this works for you, hopefully the primal way is easier to stick with (am new at this myself at the moment).

I haven't read it yet, but I will eventually.

I'd imagine that if there's friction there, it's over the the use of the word "Primal" in the title. Mark was using the word before she published.

LOL, i can't actually say exactly when. First because I only have an idea, or range of times-- and it can change, and usually does. But also because of security... we're not supposed to ever communicate dates/times of anything over phone, or internet. They call it OPSEC-- operational security.

Just eat eggs, ham, beef!

But if you can eat fatty, protein healthy goodness before, you will be less likely to go off the rails later. I'd vote against an IF leading INTO it. Eat healthy before, avoid the carbage as best you can, then IF after.

I would absolutely love to live far off of the grid. I want a cabin in the mountains of AB, with a herd of free-range cattle... couple good horses, no dependence on anyone but myself.

It's good to hear other people have gotten a lot out of it too. I have to say though that getting into the second section I found the some of the information less convincing, maybe its just me.

Awesome! While off-grid living is my ultimate goal, right now I'm just working on gradually replacing on-grid items around our house with off grid ones. Our furnace will need replacing soon, and I'm looking into combustion wood burning stoves. I think we could use our timber and lumberyard scraps to heat our home. I am also working on getting some rain barrels and using that water for whatever I can. I am convinced that solar panels will eventually become affordable and we have great sun exposure. Once the student loans are paid for, those are next on my list. We already have a well, two very productive apple trees and several maples. Chickens and goats are on the horizon.

We have almost 5 acres, 3 of which have great loamy soil. As long as we work full time, my gardening is only going to grow gradually but ultimately, I have a 10 year goal of self-sufficiency.

I don't know that we could give up internet and cable, though! But we do get our internet from a local co-op, so I like that.

Okay so this weekend hasn't been so great, but I don't feel like death either. Have definitely eaten way more sugar than I should have, but I have also dropped another pound and feel as if my body fat is shrinking tremendously. I wonder how much more weight I would have lost at this point if I didn't succumb to my sugar obsession... Oh well.

Today I woke up late, was talked into having some fresh maple syrup that my brother and Gramma had boiled... Dangg that stuff is amazing. So that automatically put the day on a bad angle - craved sugar and snacked all day. Fudge, chocolate, sweet potato fries, honey-garlic chicken...

Frig. At least I have been able to stay away from grains. I haven't really craved them at all, thankfully.

Keep on grokin'.

T.

I'm going to the in-laws over Easter and expect to the usual carb-laden temptations. Assuming that my carb intake will be 50-100% more than normal of 75-100g/day, I want to IF to counter the increased intake. Would you recommend doing this before or after (or both?). Not only am I a PB rookie, I'm an IF rookie. (Although now that I am on the PB plan, I've noticed that I can go until lunchtime without eating - strange.)

Thanks again.

After recently learning a lot more abut the dangers of soy I also hate seeing people make it a staple in their diet. My mother drinks probably 4-5 containers of soy milk per WEEK. And my friend that I mentioned is replacing meat with stuff like veggie pate and tofu and all that. I hate being confrontational with food though, especially since I am quite new to eating this way and was a pretty big believer in vegetarian diets before this.

I just read a fabulous book about Hashimoto's:
http://www.thyroidbook.com/

This doc approaches it not so much as a thyroid issue but rather an immune system problem. He identifies which immune pathway (TH-1 or TH-2) is dominant and traets that and he has also found that 95% of his Hashimoto's patients are gluten sensitive/intolerant.

Apparently, TPO resembles gluten molecules and when the immune system goes after the gluten, it also goes after the TPO in the thyroid and damages the thyroid in the process. Since iodine increases TPO production, it can accelerate the damage.
Just eating gluten once can cause an inflammatory response that lasts up to 8 months!
