High Cholesterol strikes!
I recently had my first physical in 10 years and all things considered, most everything came back good except my cholesterol levels. FBG was 80, BP 180/78.
CHOLESTEROL though was high.
Obviously, I have some things to work on. My primary concerns are:
1) I have no data to compare this against. My last blood work was 10 years ago, and I've been doing Primal for about 8 months. For all I know my levels were higher and plummeted, or stayed the same, or shot up. I just feel like a greater sample size is needed to determine what's going on.
2) Doctor prescribed a statin. My understanding is that they're generally considered safe by the medical community and family members of mine taking them. That said, there are significant risks and side effects and if it is going to be a life long commitment to taking them, I don't want to be on a drug for the next 50+ years of my life.
3) I don't exercise currently. I have improved my eating, but there are still additional adjustments I could make to be healthier. I feel like there are too many unexplored safer alternatives to justify jumping to medication.
4) My numbers may be significantly high enough that diet/exercise won't cut it.
I plan to ask my doctor to give me about 6 months to make life style changes to address the problem before I submit to medication.
I have been reading Mark's blog about cholesterol, and it is reassuring, although I fear my doctor won't buy it.
Does anyone have good experiences with this diet and bringing cholesterol under control? Am I pipe dreaming here to think I can do this without medicine?
