Ok, I've been on the primal plan for about a week and although I lost about 5 lbs in weight due to water in the first couple of days, I've gained back about 3 since then. I did so well on Atkins!!! So, I went back and reviewed how I worked the Atkins plan back in the day and what is going on now.
I was much more strict about the amounts of food I was eating. I measured everything and although I didn't officially count calories, I'm sure my caloric intake was low. I am currently trying not to count calories and use my scale, but I see that I do better with those tools rather than free-handing it. In addition, I don't think I was eating enough fat. I am still a protein ho and I think I was eating way too much protein and not eating enough fat. Carbs haven't been a problem though, so that's good.
So, beginning this AM, after pitching a bitch about the weight gain, I am back to using my food scale and taking a close look at calories. I am keeping a closer eye on my macros. I have become friends again with my measuring spoons and cups and actually, I feel better. I love my measuring cups, spoons, and scale! I am one of those who thrive better with control. Now, let's see how I do in the next couple of days!
@kreyes, I have not had my cholesterol checked yet because I'm only in my 5th week. Our insurance is not that good, we have to pay for all blood tests (a bit <$380). So I will wait until the next 9news health fair next year before I get mine checked. I'm also hoping that my thryoid will be better so I can get off of those meds.
It's hard to get rid of coffee. It's suprising that black is not bad. I was just like you. As for what I do with the loaded coffee, that's my way of getting fat into it. I love dairy and always have. :)
@allymd, I feel your pain, the first 2 weeks I lost 8lbs, put 2.5 back on then lost another lb. So, I quit getting on the scale because it's not very nice to me. I have read so many journals and it's not just us. Others have it too, but what was so inspiring for me is to see how their health improved each month. I did read that the slower the weight loss, the better because it gives your skin time to shrink with the fat, makes sence right? I am trying really hard to NOT weigh myself because I find it changes my mood if I do. I could wake up happy, step on the scale and be out of sorts the rest of the day. With reading these journals, people do so many things, fasting, carb retriction and I'm talking <20 or just at to really help with the weight loss. I love my veggies too much to go below 40ish. Do you know a whole avacado has 12 grams of carbs in it? That's a good way to get fat in as well. Lettuce 2 cups has 4 (red leaf). So, I just make sure mine are <50 or just at 50.
I think I mentioned this in this thread but the friend that turned me on to MDA and bought me the book because of my cholesterol. She is 4'11" and was a size 8, a year later, she is a 2. I have no finished all the journals because I'm reading from the beginning, within a year, all have significant weight loss. My friend does not restrict her carbs, although she does keep them <100. She does not count calories but does have a ton of fat in her diet, mostly coconut and olive oil. She buys the 25lbs at costco.
The scale is NOT my friend, so I"m concentrating on eating right with 75/15/10 or there about to make sure (it's more like 70/20/10) I stay primal all the time. Except for the weekend of grad parties, Memorial Day weekend, I have been completely primal. I was <10 days into it and after eating baked beans and having a couple of beers I felt like crap the next two days. So tired all I wanted to do was sleep. So I make sure to not do that again. I'm glad I did because if I don't want that stuff anymore.
I weight and measure still, somethings I just now know what the appropriate amount is so on some things, I don't measure anymore.
We got to do what we got to do, so the scale and measuring cups are my friends too!
@Ray, I think you and your wife are wonderful. Very giving with huge hearts!
Thank you it will be an interesting thing that we are both UBER excited about
Feel free to visit us at Facebook/physiquespecialists I am trying to get a blog setup and as soon as I get it there will be a link
Well I am a month into this as of today, lost 8 pounds then went back up 3 or 4 maybe, I did not weigh myself today as it was too depressing. :( It is almost my TOTM though (Sorry guys, TMI I know) so I am hoping it is because of that. I feel like a bloated whale carcass.
Last friday I had a tiny piece of my daughters birthday cake. That has been my only cheat in the whole month, but after I had tasted the sugar it was all I could think of. When I crave sugar but do not allow myself to have it I end up pigging out on other foods as a distraction, this time it was a few days of eating a ton of almonds. I have no idea how many but now the whole SAMS size container is empty....sooooo... I am guessing a lot, though Hubby helped a little. I will not be buying those again!!! Apparently I just cannot cheat. I allow myself some dark chocolate, above 80%, and an occasional glass of red wine but that is about as far as I can let myself go.
@RayDWeger, thankyou, I tried the 100% cocoa powder and it was blah :( from previous experience, adding bar chocolate to my coffee causes it to all float as a film on the top or be a yummy sludge at the bottom :) may try again though! I will buy some stevia per your recommendation... liquid and powder I guess.... we have some "stevia in the raw" and I remember it being horrid. I just looked up the different forms and seems that is typical of the raw varieties having a not-so-great taste. I tried Nectresse (sp?) a few weeks ago and it blew me up like a balloon!! Apparently I cannot tolerate sugar alcohols :) it honestly felt like I had swallowed a big rock.
@Ashley, I cannot tolerate eggs, so I am guessing all mayo is out, not to mention I hate it with every ounce of my being :) disgusting stuff, bleck! But thankyou! hahaha! I do eat homemade burger patties (with bacon or onions mixed in, plus spices) as an easy lunch though, I just put the patty on top of a bed of iceburg lettuce with some homemade ketchup and mustard plus some pickles and a dash of chipotle tabasco (love this stuff, when I buy it, I always buy three bottles!). Not a *really* similar meal... but somewhat the same idea
@Allymd, I am the same way, keeping track is how I do best though it is a hassle and I grow tired of it quickly. I do so love my kitchen scale though. I cannot imagine how I ever lived without it. I bought it so I could make homemade food for one of my senior greyhounds, go figure. Now I use it every day for one reason or another.
Went to a farmers market today, a small weekday one, and met a guy who sells grass fed meats (beef, pork, chicken, goat, lamb, everything) from his farm only 5 miles away from my house! So awesome, as we live in the middle of nowhere and were at least an hour from home where the farmers market was located. We introduced ourselves and he recognized our last name, he sells raw goats milk to my Sister in law :) how cool is that. He says we can order online and pickup at the farm, that is even closer than the grocery store. Now we just have to get to where we can afford it..... but I am excited
@ G & C
My bad for lack of info
I use the 100% Special Dark Cocoa Powder.... The bakers solid chocolate is BLAH!!!!!!!
Bummer on the eggs as they are almost a PERFECT FOOD..
Have you tried to eat either the whites or the yolk to see if it's a possibility ?
Sent from my EVO using Marks Daily Apple Forum mobile app
Never tried egg whites or just the yolks, was planning on experimenting once I was down to my goal weight just in case inflammation or side effects from eating them causes me to stall weight loss. Typically they just make me nauseous and bloated. The last time I ate them they came right back up. That was two years ago. I have also heard that if you can't eat chicken eggs, sometimes you can eat duck ones. There is someone local I think that sells duck eggs. I may try them too eventually. I really miss quiche, and crustless would still be worth it.
So, my weight loss is still moving but it feels like it's totally stalled out since quitting smoking. I seem to keep losing the same pound over and over again for the last week and a half. I know I'm not really officially in a plateau but it feels like one because of how much I was losing previously. Good thing is, I haven't gained more than that same pound since I quit smoking so that's something...
I had my physical yesterday and the results are in... no cholesterol meds for me at this point!! (Like I'd take them anyway...) We're going to re-evaluate again in another 6 months to a year because although my total cholesterol is still far higher than my doc would like, everything is moving the right direction. My high/low (or is it low/high) ratio is down 2 which is really good since it was over 8 in December and my triglycerides are down by over 120-150ish to a huge, middle of normal 74! My glucose has dropped to right smack in the middle of normal as well.
She also thinks my hot flashes and lack of sleep are due to the rapid drop in weight/cutting out all soy/strength training as much as I can and that my body just hit a temporary adjustment period so we're not looking at changing my hormone dosage and are trying some stuff to help me sleep until it passes. All in all it was a really good dr. apt yesterday.
@PrimalFreedom - That's a good question, I think I pretty much only "play" on the weekends. I tend to think of my gym time as play because I enjoy it so much, but it doesn't really fit my definition. If I think really hard about it, I don't know that I really play much at all...
@allymd - I think I need to get back to measuring like you are, thank you for reminding me! I tend to be majorly off in my estimations of things like how much an ounce is so even though I track what I eat I don't get the best representation of quantity and at this point I think that's my biggest eating obstacle other than getting more veggies in.
Hi! I'm new too!
I've known about the paleo diet for some time as I use to do crossfit, however I never took it serious as I felt it was unbelievable!! I'm still trying to change my mindset towards this high fat diet! I started last week so this is my first weekend on the lifestyle change.
Sometimes I feel like what I'm eating is detrimental!
But I definitely have noticed a change in my energy levels! I no longer get a mid morning or an afternoon slump! It's great! My main goal however is to lose weight. I have about 8kgs I need to lose. I don't mind if it takes a while, as long as I see little results!
Anyway, great to have another newbie on the same path!
@raikay, those results sound wonderful! Congrats. My weight loss has stalled as well. I seem to be doing the same, loosing a pond then loosing it again. Remember that our bodies can fluctuate 4 lbs of water weight a day.
@milba, welcome. We have a good group here and when we are on, always willing to help.
hopefully that pic attaches :) if it did, that is my Primal Bacon Explosion that I just popped into the oven to get ready for tomorrows Fathers Day brekkie!
