September 13, 2013 (Friday)
It’s Friday the 13th! Woo hoo! Often a lucky or special day for me.
Might as well get Thursday’s food out of the way. Coffee with coconut oil. The small burger and protein shake. A chicken thigh. After that it was all downhill on the old calorie count. Eating throughout the day, I polished off a pound and a third of the cheeses I described yesterday. And the fifth of tequila – I rationalized that by telling myself that I didn’t want it sitting around the house tempting me during my six week experiment. Cronometer shows that I ate about three times the calories that I usually do. We’ll call that my cheese and tequila refeed.
Amazingly, I’m okay this morning. I drank a lot of water yesterday in the form of unsweetened limeade, so maybe that helped. No headache. A little wobbly, so it’s a good thing I’m not a brain surgeon.
Oh, and speaking of brain surgeons, I’ve been watching a show called Do No Harm. I already knew that it won’t have a second season, but some of the networks are getting better about how they end a first season in case it doesn’t get renewed. Son of a bleeping bitch if this didn’t end leaving way too many questions.
A team of researchers who found that people think they are more attractive when drinking alcohol, have scooped an Ig Nobel prize for their work.
The researchers from France and the US confirmed the "beer goggle effect" also works on oneself.
Ig Nobel awards are a humorous spoof-like version of their more sober cousins, the Nobel prizes.
Winners have 60 seconds to make a speech to avoid being booed off stage by an eight-year-old girl.
Titled "Beauty is in the eye of the beer holder", the team were awarded one of the 10 awards (listed below) at a packed gala ceremony at Harvard University, US.
Other winners included a patent for trapping and ejecting airplane hijackers and a UK team scooped an Ig for observing that a cow is more likely to stand up the longer it has been lying down.
Stuff like that makes me happy.
September 14, 2013 (Saturday)
Ugh, I’m stuffed.
First a word about eating a 50 protein gram breakfast within 30 minutes of dawn or when one awakens. Unless you eat a single-item breakfast, or eat something cold, it’s not easy to prepare something and eat it in that time frame first thing in the morning. Dr. K must have a housekeeper or equivalent.
I’ve done it three days in a row, but I’ll have to sit down and figure some simple ways to accomplish it. The first day, I had the mini burger and the protein shake – pretty easy. The second day, I had a big honkin’ pork chop, but because I guesstimated the weight of the bone wrong, I ended up with 44 grams of protein instead of 50. Good enough.
This morning I thought I’d make a real breakfast. Chicken thigh meat, two eggs, and feta cheese all in a scramble. Cronometer says 53 grams of protein, so I calculated correctly, but damn, I’m stuffed.
IOW, this thing is going to take some planning. And until I get used to cooking before my brain is fully awake, I am going to rely on the protein shakes for at least some of the protein for awhile. Eating it all as whole food for right now is tough.
Okay, with all that pissing and moaning, except for feeling stuffed, this protein “dosing” first thing in the morning is feeling pretty good. It doesn’t make me tired, nor does it make me go searching for food like when I would just randomly eat whatever for breakfast. In fact that hungry feeling after eating was what made me give up eating breakfast in the first place. What’s the point of eating if it’s just going to make you hungry?
Since I’m giving up rice (waahh!) and potatoes for this experiment, I stocked up on mushrooms and greens – collards and spinach, so that I wouldn’t be eating meat with a side of meat for my meals. I also have an order of canned/jarred/vacuum packed tomato products on its way.
Trip to mailbox on way back from walk yields one issue of Vegetarian Times (thought I was done with those), and two issues of Dwell. Yay on the Dwell.
As nymphs, young planthoppers have these gears as a way to synchronize their legs during propulsion. The gears on one leg, as it prepares to jump, cause the other leg to move as well which allows for a successful jump. Nothing worse than planthoppers spiraling out of control! Hey, Maw – did you get a load of that baby cicada – he was jest spiralin’ outta control! His gears must be faulty. Paw, shut up with all of that there science talk – it’s jest a stupid bug.
