wow guys - thanx so much for all your replies.
Sorry Crabbs - Whanau is our own Maori name for family.
Our DD is on a trip to Hawaii at the moment with the exchange group, so I will definately get her to take some sneaky pickies when she gets back. I was thinking a knitted blanket rather than quilted. I have never learn't to quilt, however it might be something to try when I get really old and dottery !
I am going to copy and paste all this advice onto a word document and bring it along with us to the States, then I have no excuse if I get alzheimic along the way !!!!!!!!
Vancouver is just a stop over this time. Last time we had a few days and loved it. I think we fly in, and get straight on the boat.
as for mosh pits Mr. Perfidy - Gwamma says NOOOOOOOOOO LOL with my luck I would end up in hospital with a broken leg !!!!!
Next question - I do not understand the tipping system. In fact when we were in the UK a few years ago, we ate at a restaurant and didn't realise that we had to tip - as we left we heard the head honcho say "bloody Australians" !!!!!!! We laughed long and hard over that one.... sorry Australia, Us Kiwis are happy for you to take the rap sometimes !!!!!!
Lunch: 15-20% of the total bill.
Supper: 20-25% of total bill. (I've tipped as high as 30% for very exceptional service.)
Also, as a favor to servers/waitstaff, if I pay on a credit card, I put zero in the tip line and then tip in cash. This is in no way necessary, but because of the way the IRS taxes servers on tips, I like to help them out (the servers, not the IRS).
At a bar, tipping can be at the end or per round. If you open a tab with your cc, you can certainly wait 'til the end. I'd stay in the 20% range, increasing or decreasing depending on service.
Thanx Joanie. Are the waiting staff not paid alot ????? Is that the reason for the tipping ?????
Minimum wage for tipping positions is like, $2.15/hr but a lot of places start as "high" as $6/hr
That is a very low wage! What is the minimum wage in America ???
$7.50 I think.
Minimum wage is bullshit though. I work with kids that make minumum wage, and if it were higher, we would just fire them.

Sorry, I thought you were talking about quilting. A knitted blanket would be awesome, and in such beautiful colours. Have you got enough time for such a big knitted project? You must be faster than me!!
Federal minimum wage remains at $7.25/hour for 2013. Servers are under a different law and make two-something an hour as long as the employer can prove that with their tips, they at least make the federal minimum.
States are allowed to pass a minimum wage higher than federal, but I don't think they're allowed to pass a lower one. The three states on the left coast (west coast) all have substantially higher than federal minimum wage, with ORegon close to $9. Of course trying to find a job in OR is like trying to find a potential husband in a gay bar. ;) They manage to pass laws screwing business every year. Pot stores - no (even though medical marijuana is allowed). A casino not on Indian land - no, even though hundreds of jobs would have been created.
Oops - far more info than required.
Crabs and Joanie, It will be fantastic, althou the hand brake is coming along !!!!!!!!LOL seriously thou, I cannot wait to get over there, but I just need to do my homework. Being farmers I can just see DH doing the "head on up some randoms driveway - just to say hi " !!!!! not quite sure how America wil take the heathens from the colonies..... but will soon find out !!!!!
I'm a farmer in Indiana... and I would LOVE it if you showed up in my driveway! I don't post much but I always enjoy reading yours!

Spotted Pony - how fantastic, where in Indiana, and what type of farming ????
Marthat - no I am not fast by any means, however I still have a few months. I am thinking knitted squares in different colours, then crochet around each square with black, then sew all together ???? the jury is still out.
Mr Perfidy and Joanie, that seems so unfair, such a low minimum, however what is the cost of living like ????? Always relative I suppose.
I remember when we were in Denmark, we couldn't believe how much it cost to buy stuff, however the wages over there at the time were huge.
