The problem with vouchers is that it is still taxpayer stolen and money and still ultimately under government control. How long before government starts passing rules, regulations, and attaching "strings" to any educational institution that wants to be eligible for voucher funds? Within a decade or so, the system would be indistinguishable from the one we have now. We throw the word "socialist" around but we have to understand that there are no socialists anymore. It doesn't work. Almost all socialists in the West have converted to Fascism. It is a far more subtle and effective, and at the end of the day, you get the same result.
The only effective solution to the education crisis in this country is to get rid of government schools and replace them with nothing. Unleash the power of the market to create a vibrant competitive education industry.
I think that could produce great results if we eased into it correctly. I feel like so many people are afraid to even talk of possible solutions to things such as this that don't involve total government control.
If there were a voucher program there soon would be many private schools that have no religious connections whatsoever. Government has proven over and over again that they cannot do a respectable job of educating our children. Wouldn't it be nice if even very poor parents could get there children out of a bad school and into a school of THEIR choice? If you would rather grind your anti religion ax than give PARENTS a real CHOICE in their child's future that is your problem. And please tell me how understanding that government, ALL government does hardly anything well makes a person "hateful".
Everyone is entitled to their opinion but I agree the way some of the way those views are expressed are hateful and I think venomous - such as,

I've been struggling with my 4yo over her breakfast/lunch for pre-K (at a public elementary school) and saw this story last night--it really upset me, the lightbulb went off and I realized why the menu is so effed up, particularly breakfast. I'm sorry, but sending little kids to class hopped up on sugar with no protein is just a BAD IDEA.
Here's today's lunch menu at her school (oddly, one of the better days):
Pork Roast - 3g (3 grams? That's all?)
Zesty lemon broccoli - 2g
Cooked Carrots - 8g
Brown Rice - 37g
Whole grain breadstick - 13g
Every day there's assorted fresh fruit/veggies and of course milk.
I pack her lunches, but she wants to eat what the other kids are eating, and her teachers assured her that what they eat is healthy too. I don't think she *actually* wants the food though, she just wants to fit in. I let her buy cafeteria food one day, and she came home starving because she only drank the milk and juice for breakfast, and all she ate of her lunch was carrot sticks and fruit. ::sigh:: Add this to the fact that she's ahead of the class and getting into trouble because she's bored...we're looking into a different school.

LOL, my school lunches were too, at least some of the time. Today was one of the best days on the menu this month--I'd probably eat that, minus the brown rice. Otherwise there's the usual popcorn chicken, hot dogs, pizza, chicken tenders, "pizza max sticks w/marinara" (??) and occasional classics like chicken casserole, spaghetti, or salisbury steak. What really got me about today's menu is the TINY portion allotted to protein vs. the rice.
Two words: lunch box
Not so fast. There are schools in this country that have started to not allow students to bring their lunch to school. Land of the free indeed.
