Of course; they are completely different things. "Chronic cardio" can lead to worn out joints/enlarged heart/etc. It is also (IMO) an inefficient form of exercise (with respect to time taken) and unnecessary if weight-loss or "general" (i.e. non-endurance sports) fitness is the primary goal. I do however think that a [I]lot[/I] of people on this forum set the bar way too low as to what constitutes "chronic".
If you like to run, run.
If you like to do CrossFit, do CrossFit.
If it starts to hurt, stop.
Isn't that really as simple as it should be?
Maybe. Unless, by the time it starts to hurt, the damage has already been done (knees/hips/etc).
