You first....a crushed rock surface is rather painful for running barefoot, since that is what is on the trails I go to, I wear minimal shoes.
Ok! I'll check Merrell out. Anyone have opinion on Vivobarefeet? I liked the vivo aqueous:

I love high tops, so I thought these looked sick.

My partner has webbed toes and loathes (jealous much?) my Vibrams.

+1 on the softstars. I'd get the 4mm soles instead of the 2mm soles. I wore a hole in the 2mm soles after wearing them daily for around 1.5 years.
Here's another one to look at: Altra "Zero Drop". I just got a pair of their "Eve" shoes, and they are very minimal--but they come with two different thickness insoles, so you can gradually get used to the pseudo-barefoot feeling. I've had them a few days, and they're very comfortable.
They also have running shoes with thicker soles, but without the elevated heel, so they're still "zero drop".
