Caffeine and blood sugar
Is there any evidence that black coffee or other sources of caffeine can affect blood sugar in a fasted state? I have heard that caffeine might cause blood sugar swings, but I'd like to have a second opinion. I love my coffee, although I drink it for the taste and not for energy. But I'm trying to get back to my old IF habits, which felt great. I just don't like the thought of playing with my blood sugar while fasting. Any thoughts/links/anything?

I am type II diabetic and have not noticed any blood sugar issues with my coffee. I did give up caffeine for a few months and did not notice anything either.

My husband is Type 1 and drinks black coffee every day, lots of it. It's had no effect on his blood sugar at all. You could always test your blood sugar before and after drinking it.

My best buddy back in Calif, a 77 y.o. diabetic Italian-American, (type 2) drinks non-caffeinated coffee every day, 1-3 cups a day. He says it does affect his readings, if he drinks caffeine. But I think for most people, it's a case by case thing. Putting milk or other things in coffee changes it. Some people report stevia affects their blood sugar negatively, while I've never noticed anything negative with it, after using it for years. Black coffee is not such a big deal imo, but again, it's only my opinion...

I use plain black coffee to curb hunger in the AM. I do not check my blood sugar, but I know what it feels like to have blood sugar go high and low, and black coffee does not create those sensations. Subjective, I know. But one more vote for "safe".

It's important not to drink coffee on an empty stomach, it should always be with food, since it increases the metabolic rate, and can deplete glycogen stores.- Ray Peat

Argh. Too many spam bots! Coffee is fine on an empty stomach. That's how most people drink it. Even if that's true, glycogen depletion is typically a good thing.

Really - how so?
And yes - way too many spammers... I suspect the Danny Roddy sugar thread was actually an ingenius marketing ploy by Peat ;)

I doubt that black coffee has any effect on blood sugars because I have a fasting blood test every 4 months, and I've been told by both the techs and my doctor that drinking black coffee is OK. Since blood sugar is one of the items tested, I doubt that it would be allowed if it were known to have any effect.
I was only told this after years of testing without drinking coffee, and there's really no difference in my BS numbers since I've been having my morning coffee first.

Glycogen depletion is like free exercise, sort of. It gets the fat-burning going with no effort. From what little I think I understand, anyway...
