tried it, it didn't work. the spammers are real live people so they just kept typing the captchas in

Easy ban their IPs. Ban whole blocks of IPs, problem solved.

Never heard of a proxy? Or a dynamic IP address? Or a VPN?
Those are three incredibly simple ways of changing your IP address.

In any case, if the spammers didn't know how to change their IP address, they do now. So we can check that solution off the list.
I agree with Jim - having a few select established senior users moderate would effectively solve the problem. The last thing anyone wants is per-post captchas!
