Please explain to me how it was beneficial to women.
Of course men are also descriminated against- but it was a matter of class not gender.
It wasn't beneficial to women. It was, however, possible for women to jump social classes with relative ease based on charm, wit, ability, and of course, looks (which I'm sure some would argue is fairly sexist as well). Men were more or less prohibited from jumping 'class', whether it be post-colonial New World culture, Old World Europe, or ancient Indian Hindu. In that sense, women had much more ability to improve their station than men.

hmm...no. it's hard to be specific unless you're talking about a specific culture/time period, but most highly striated cultures had either strict social prohibitions or actually legal prohibitions against jumping class regardless of the gender. there will always be exceptions, and women could act as prostitutes, concubines, etc. which would afford them a higher standard of living than their class would have. nevertheless, if a woman married up substantially, she and her family were generally blacklisted socially, which would effect everything potentially including her family's livelihood.
