I've gotten that same thing from a friend about looking tired. I was astonished, because I feel better than I have felt in a long time. I'm in bed by 9:30 and sleep soundly to 5:30 and wake up before my alarm sounds. I feel rested, so why would I look tired? Then in looking in the mirror I realized that I have lost a lot of weight in my face. It has lost its jolly roundness and become more...chiseled. So I wonder if that's it... Some people (who don't look very close) mistake facial weight loss as looking "drawn?"
The jerky thing is what prompted me to make my own, the commercial stuff is full of sugar and often fillers, nitrates and nitrites. How are you with canned mackerel and sardines? I bought a bunch of them (packed in olive oil) at TJs. They have proven to be very helpful for quick meals. Of course there is the smell...

Maybe freezing your ass off in your office makes you look tired?

I think you are both right! I definitely have some cheekbones. Where did they come from? Never had them before. (I am a chubby-faced person, even in thinner days.) But imagine all the calories I am burning trying to stay warm!
I am intrigued by making my own jerky - seems much more cost effective, for one thing. I understand I can make it in an ordinary oven, although it takes a long time. Can't figure out why jerky is so full of crap.
I love sardines and mackerel! They are not stealth food, it is true. The only problem with eating them at home is that I pretty much get attacked by ordinarily placid felines.
Still fasting, pretty hungry but manageable. It's only been 15 hours, however I have been awake for all of it. Now it is sleeping time, hurray!

We make our own jerky often and did way before we went primal. It's not hard. start with a decent cut of meat. buy or make your own dry rub. use a tad of vinegar and/or worcester sauce to taste. Cut up the meat, mix with flavorings, fridge overnight, lay out in oven or dryer for 6-8 hours. presto - jerky! We've used a roast beef type roast cut initially and it comes out great. Not fatty, which could be an issue, but it's pretty tasty anyway.

Home-made jerky. Now there's a thought. I've never been a jerky eater, but the granola bars I still pack in my purse are just for handing out to panhandlers. I won't give money, because I know what they'll do with cash, and I don't want to be an enabler. On the other hand, I don't really need pick-me-up snacks the way I used to either, so I haven't missed it too much.
Siobhan, I'm betting on the thinner face being the issue. Some people misinterpret what they're seeing. Hey, at least she cares...
I have always been jealous of my hubby's dimples (a couple of our kids and one nephew also got them) and lo and behold, I now have my own when I smile. Well, maybe they're laugh lines, but I'm calling them dimples. ;)

Yup, I know just what you mean, Fat Kitty (she was a rescue and never had a proper name so we call her this) will come running, (well waddling) at the sound of the tiny little "pfft" when the can opens.
I bought a reasonably nice food dehydrator to make the jerky, it works beautifully. I think it was about $150.00 but I bet one could get one way less expensively from a department store. It's not a real high tech thing. But an oven will work, I got mine in the summer and didn't want to be running the oven for that long, but in the winter it would be nice!
I've made several batches, but since I considered it a free food I ate it like it was candy. So since I am trying not to eat soooo much protein, I've cut back.

Okay, so jerky is on the agenda. Of course you realize I will probably consume the entire batch in an hour or so.
Fast is over! I had some broth that I gourmet-ed up with some butter, parsley, and seasonings. Pretty good. I thought I would start out with something like that to let my tummy know to start working again. Waited a little bit and then had some squash casserole and turkey. Maybe I should work some longer fasts into my life. I should probably fast at work more often, just eat one meal a day when I am in my working cycle. I have had that idea before but didn't work at it.
Realized that I'm not fat anymore. I'm not skinny and not at my goal weight, but I'm not fat. It was odd to realize that I am a normal sized person now. I don't look like I did when I was thinner and younger, say four or five years ago. Shapes change as we get older! (Stating the obvious here.)
One of my co-workers who is only 40 has had a small stroke. She is fine, but that is a bit of a wake-up call. She has a terribly unhealthy lifestyle, overweight, cigarettes, Red Bull, stress, stress, stress. She was telling me all about how she is on the South Beach diet but never asked me how I lost weight or mentioned that I appear to have lost weight. Funny because I've lost 30 pounds since April. Since she is facing some serious health issues you might think she would be curious. Oh well. I have no idea how other people think.

Theses spambots have been on a rampage across the journals today!

I am so sorry about your co-worker. I'm imagining she sees your healthy lifestyle. As long as she doesn't address it with you, she doesn't have to stop smoking or drinking Red Bull. But, maybe the small stroke will save her life if she comes to realize that her lifestyle is killing her. I hope so.
It is hard to know how other people think. Sometimes, I even wonder how I think:-) Hope you get a chance to be gentle with her and help her out.
I love jerky. My grandfather used to give me a huge cardboard box of his homemade venison jerky every year after hunting season. I read and munched on jerky. I can still smell and taste it! Enjoy that hour:-)
That is so cool you aren't fat. At 203 or something, I'll be overweight instead of obese so that will be nice.
I love hearing about positive steps.

I second the vote for jerky (or you could try biltong - South African type dried meat!!! YUM) but I have to agree that it takes more will power than anyone in our family has to stop yourself eating it as fast as you can! I have found that not only are there few choices on good protein at gatherings, but so often the salads and veggies are all carbs, pasta and sugar etc. I usually take a bag of baby carrots, a punnet of baby portobella mushrooms, some chunks of raw cauliflower and broccoli are all very filling and satisfying. I am with you - I am not, knowingly, ever going to eat grains again!
Glad your fast went well! I really hope your colleague can get to the place of trying to get healthy, it would be awesome if she would start asking questions of you! Funny that you mention how someone thought you looked so tired - I was thinking the same thing about myself yesterday, and I think that it must be something about the change in your face as you lose fat!! I am sure that eventually everything will even out and you'll look radiant and rested and youthful! Isn't it amazing how unhealthy the health professionals tend to be? That always used to amaze me even back in the days before I knew much of anything about nutrition!!
