Skipping rope is a good "bridge" to running in minimalist type shoes, even if Grok probably didn't do it back in his day. Mine are New Balance "somethins'" (can't read much of anything related to model on them anymore) purchased a year or two ago. All I can say is they're closed-toe, no cushion, orange and gray in color, and quite light weight-wise.
Anyway, ropework is lower impact than running and forces you to use a fore/midfoot strike by the very nature of the activity. Same as would be used on the road or trail in minimalist shoes. Be sure not to try any crazy stuff when starting ropework. Just a standard alternating footstrike at medium cadence and it should turn out OK.
Also, whatever your conditioning, make sure your first session with the rope in this type of shoe is only 5 minutes' duration. No matter how easy it feels during this first session, you will pay dearly if you exceed 5 minutes. Ask me how I know...:(
Anyway, minimalist running shoes are great!
