No photos, but tonight there was a paleo potluck at my CF gym. I got up early this morning and started a batch of bison chili in the slow cooker. By the time I got home, it was done perfectly. The chili was a hit, and the staff want to make it their recipe of the week :D
Other stuff today:
Breakfast: three pastured eggs, scrambled in coconut oil. Cold-brewed coffee with whole milk.
Mid-morning: raspberries, blackberries, and strawberries.
Lunch: BAS with mixed greens, turkey, tomato, feta, sundried tomato dressing.
Afternoon: Mackintosh apple from the first of this year's apples to arrive at the market, almond butter.
Dinner: potluck goodness! Had squash chips with guacamole for the first time. Yeah, I need to make some of those at home--so good!
Brain stuff: reading a really fascinating book about women, population, and environment in international development. I'm definitely getting a sense of my philosophy on development and the role of NGOs and aid organizations. Considering applying for PhD programs outside North America.
Avoid poisons: there was beer at the potluck. As a celiac, that's definitely poison to me! My sweetie had one instead.
Fitness stuff: not so much unless the flight of stairs to the second floor of my office building counts.
Play: the potluck. Had a good time laughing with the people at the gym. I'm getting to know folks a bit more now, and it was nice to have the chance to be social and hang out beyond our workouts. Not physical play, true, but humans are social animals, and most of us need connections with others to be healthy. Developing a strong social network is healthy and (hopefully!) fun too.
Sleep: not enough. Woke up too early this morning worrying about some stuff. I hate that. Not enough sunlight today either. The days are getting shorter quickly, and we had grey skies, rain, and even hail to add to the lack of sun.
Avoid trauma: Let's see...yup, all limbs present and accounted for.
Good for you, Owly on the socializing and networking! I hate that the days are getting shorter. I love fall, but I'm not a happy camper during the winter. I get too bored and I need the sun!
Our winters here are miserable. Months and months of cold, and the days are so short (less than eight hours in midwinter). I adore fall, but I hate winter. I am glad I'm escaping somewhere warm for five weeks this year!

Yeah.. people try to tell me to move to Mnpls and I say "well I might as well move to Canada!" ... I HATE the winters up here in the north.... I can't imagine what they must be like there...
I ordered a pig today. All of it.
There's a local farmer who pasture raises purebred Berkshire pigs. I buy meat from him regularly, and the quality is always very high. He sells half a pig for $4.00/lb or the whole thing for $3.50, which is a fantastic price. So I asked him today about getting a whole animal--it's about 100lbs of meat. We will likely split it with my brother-in-law. We should have our meat by the end of November (scheduled for when we get home from India). I am so excited. My freezer will be full of pork and elk. Now I just need to arrange for some chickens and a turkey for Christmas. I'm also considering getting a goose. Mmmmm...goose fat.
Also, I did Annie for the first time at CrossFit today. My double-unders are still pretty sad, so I did tuck jumps. I am pleased with my time: 10:50, which is pretty good for a noob (and I beat out some folks who've been doing this a lot longer!). Not a record breaker, but I am really proud of it. And then, after the gym, we were at the farmers market and I needed more cash. I ran a couple of blocks to the bank machine and back, no big deal: yet another sign that I am regaining the strength in my knee and rebuilding capacity.

*DANCES* I am so proud of your ANNIE!!! ... I can't quite do double unders either but they are not at the top of my priority list at the moment so I am just kinda... letting them lie and doing 4x reg jumps.

After I posted last night, I went to a fundraising event for a friend's political campaign. The event was a beer tasting (not so much for me, celiac = no beer) and dance party with this awesome local blues band. I danced most of the night, taking to heart the idea that one should "dance like nobody's watching" and having a great time. I love to dance! There's something so instinctive about just letting go and moving to music.
However, this morning my body is letting me know that Annie is hard freakin' work. Interestingly, the muscles in my feet are sore. I did the jumps in my Sprints, and I think I used my feet much more as part of the spring. I found the jumping itself much more comfortable in the Vibrams because I had to launch and land much more naturally than I would be able to do in trainers. The soreness today is post-exercise muscle soreness, not impact-type pain. And, of course, all those other jumping muscles hurt as well as my abs. It's tolerable, though, not to the level of "OMG what did I do?!"
I think this whole primal diet really makes a difference in my recovery after workouts. I'm pushing hard, but I hurt far less the next day than I did when I was eating a conventional diet. I think the fat is the biggest thing--I have done higher protein before, and it wasn't as effective without the fat intake. Also, the absence of grain-related anti-nutrients is likely a factor here. I also don't do the same panicked refuel post-workout like I did before. I now wait until I get home, and I don't eat the simple carbs like I did before. I try for a whole meal approach instead.

So I have really been failing at Law #5 the last few days. I am stressing over a bunch of stuff, which then leads to insomnia, which then affects my stress levels, which then...you see how this goes. I am running on five hours of sleep today, and the last few nights haven't been any better. I can't sleep in, either--my internal alarm clock is too strong. I'm hoping tonight is the night that I'm too worn out to do anything but crash. I'll be glad once [major event I'm planning] is over on Friday night so that I will have one less worry.
I'm doing okay in other areas. My eating is nicely on track, I'm getting to CrossFit, and I am taking time to play with my partner and our dogs. I just really need to get this sleep issue under control. Time for some meditation or something I suppose.

Herb and garlic chicken drumsticks, cooked in the slow cooker, with broccoflower and sweet potato. The weird stuff in the foreground is the garlic cloves I cooked in with the chicken. They were tender and sweet, and so soft that you could spread them over bites of meat. So good.
Cooking red cabbage with garlic, onion, salt, and pepper, in bacon fat. This is my first time ever using bacon fat for cooking. In our house when I was a kid, bacon fat was something you threw out!
