    LDL and coconut - testing my body!

    Alright, so the last time I had my blood drawn my LDL was really high.

    Chol - 315
    Glucose -83
    Trigs - 60
    HDLD - 83
    LDLD - 190
    Calculated LDL - 220

    That's after many months of regularly using coconut oil to cook, and using eggs to sop it into my belly.


    Now I'm going to replace the coconut oil with tallow for the next few months (Three? Maybe six? Or both!) and have it drawn again. I won't be changing anything else about my eating, just my primary cooking fat. Could be awhile, hang tight!

    That LDL just seems goofy high, even if the ratio IS within normal limits! I keep seeing people with 1 to 1 HDL/LDL and close. I know toying with these numbers isn't that critical. But my health insurance has begun to track my lipid numbers already. It's only a matter of time before I have to pay a higher rate for having "bad" numbers...

    In my opinion, coconut oil = refined industrial crap that should be kept to a minimum if hardly used at all.

    You'd be surprised how quickly your lipid panel can change. Mine changed drastically within 3 week time frames. One was cutting out things like coconut oil. Getting another NMR done in 2 weeks which is 2 months from my last.

    Why is coconut oil bad? Everything I have read says to use that for cooking. If we shouldn't use coconut oil, then what is a suitable replacement?

    It's not the coconut oil it's the saturated fat.

    When it doubles your LDL and potentially puts your LDL-P count around 2000, then yes I believe that saturated fat may be a problem for certain individuals.

    My daughter made cupcakes with coconut oil three days ago (special occasion-the oldest was leaving for college). We had no other oil in the house besides olive oil. They were the best cupcakes I have ever eaten. Just sayin'.

    Personally I think beef tallow tastes way WAY better than coconut oil. It will be interested to see what it does to your blood results though. Good luck with your experiment.
