    Frozen, slightly defrost, refreeze

    I have a "family pak" of large chicken breasts. They are frozen, in the pak, like a rock. I live alone and would like to cook just one or maybe two breasts at a time. Is it possible (or safe) to defrost the pak just enough to break the "glacier" of breasts apart then wrap them individually and refreeze them? They were bought on sale, .99 a pound, and there are 3 large paks in the freezer. I know I could cook them and then refreeze them but I'd rather just cook one now and then.

    If you thaw in the refrigerator (might take a day depending on how large the pack is), it should be fine to freeze one more time after portioning them out. If you defrost at room temp, or warmer than a fridge (40F), it will affect the quality (texture) of the meat. You should use it ASAP once defrosted (unless freezing again) as it probably won't stay fresh for as long as if it hadn't ever been frozen.

    Thanks for your input. As they thaw, I'll just keep trying to separate them and get them in the freezer again quickly.

    I have done this before. I used a hammer and a screwdriver to separate them.
    Disclaimer: I eat 'meat and vegetables' ala Primal, although I don't agree with the carb curve. I like Perfect Health Diet and WAPF Lactofermentation a lot.

    A butter knife you don't really care about and copious elbow grease works too.

    A better option may be to thaw them all, cook them all (grill some, bake some) portion them out and refreeze. That way you have a pre-made "meal" right out of the freezer......

    I would also just smack the frozen block on the edge of the counter, same way I break up frozen fish and such.
    Steak, eggs, potatoes - fruits, nuts, berries and forage. Coconut milk and potent herbs and spices. Tea instead of coffee now and teeny amounts of kelp daily. Let's see how this does! Not really had dairy much, and gut seems better for it.
