  • DIY sheepskin boots?

All being well I should have 3-4 organically tanned sheepskins in a few weeks
This first batch will probably go to family and friends as rugs.
However, I'm mulling over doing "something else" with them; such as moccasins / slippers / "uggs".

Does anyone know good sites to look at for "how to"s, or resources for stitching materials, soles, and so on?

Alternatively, I could try again to home-tan some rabbit skin and play around with that.

    All thoughts appreciated!

There's a set of patterns for Viking shoes reproduced here - see figures 30b to 30h at bottom of page:

    http://www.vikingsonline.org.uk/reso...asickit15.html

Those are for leather shoes, but i guess the basic shapes might work for any material. What I think you've got there are simple patterns with relatively few pieces that don't need lasts or anything to make them up.

Something like an Eskimo mukluk might also be possible. You might try searching under that in Google - or in YouTube

It's also possible that someone here has done some DIY shoemaking and can give pointers:

Some of my fondest memories were created on just such a sheepskin rug...in front of a fireplace...

I have made Indian moccasins on patterns from many tribes, but the finest sheepskin boot I have ever seen is the Ugg boot.

Check this link to see where you can see and handle some in the UK and maybe get some ideas.

Tan those rabbit pelts but don't make things that will get heavy duty use from them.

Forgot to mention, my daughter told me that she made hers following directions on YouTube.

            Happy stitching.

This second link is for a baby shoe, ut an adult version shouldn't be too different:

I really want to make some soft shoes for myself, they look so comfy. My 2 year old daughter wears soft shoes still. I am jealous, people give us a hard time about it, but they are so much better for her feet.
