  • study claims to link processed meats including bacon to heart disease

Comments from those much smarter than me on this claim? http://www.reuters.com/article/idUST...e=domesticNews

Our beloved bacon is included in the villians of this study.

This has been linked to a few times now. Here's my response from another thread (adapted):

Correlation does not imply causation. First, many of the store-bought processed meats contain less than ideal fillers. Check the label. Second, they didn't take into account the rest of the diet of those in both groups. People who eat a large amount of processed meats are also more likely to eat other things that are questionable for their health, i.e. processed grains, sugars, etc. which I'm assuming are the real culprits.

also, new age bacon isn't the healthiest. Homemade bacon however is.
I didn't like the rules you gave me, so I made some of my own.

How do you make your own bacon at home?

i did a quick search, the common way is to rub with salt and maple syrup throw in a ziploc bag and toss it in the fridge for a week to cure it, you can then simply cook or smoke for more flavour.

or you can just eat pork belly, which is bacon sans curing

Yeah, about a week in to eating primal my room mate (who is also doing a primal thang but trying to gain weight rather than lose it) looked at me one morning and said "dude, we've been eating bacon like it's a health food... maybe we need to chill out." I think bacon (especially bacon that's been cured in any way/pretty much any store bought bacon) should be a sometimes food. Even though it just looks like strips of meat, it is fairly "processed" anyways...

My family used to grow pigs when I was a kid. Maybe I should fix up the sty and talk them into buying some more. Pigs are the best garbage disposal units.
