  • Diabetes epidemic in China

110+ million diabetics and nearly 500 million pre-diabetics!

JAMA Network | JAMA | Prevalence and Control of Diabetes in Chinese Adults

    Very Keynesian actually.
Feed population with junk and then sell drugs. GDP everywhere goes up. Krugman should love this.
    Few but ripe.

Both, I'm sure. The rice is likely not the same wild rice used a century ago.

When I was over there I couldn't buy plain old water (I wasn't gonna drink the tap water).
It was a choice of traditional green tea or an array of sugar filled drinks.

I doubt it's the rice as the Chinese have been cultivating it for a long time. My roommate is from China and we talk frequently about the differences between the United States and China. In China, she says, the fruits and vegetables are so laden with toxins and pesticides that you have to soak them in soapy water for an hour, rinse them several times, and then cook them in order to make them safe to eat. Nothing is eaten raw for the most part because of the dangers. The same is true with meat. The Chinese rely on packaged and processed foods that are considered safer than fresh meat and produce. My roommate's diet reflects these practices. She will buy small packages of greens and mushrooms, but these are just to supplement her diet of mostly packaged ramen noodles and frozen pot stickers.

Rice may not be an ideal food substance, but I would hesitate to point to that first as it has been a staple of the Chinese diet for thousands of years and wouldn't explain the recent explosion of diabetes and cancer. Processed foods, coupled with increased consumption of American-style fast food is a much stronger factor, imho.
