    This is interesting ...

    New analysis of pottery at the transition to agriculture looks to reveal a taste for spices among hunter-gatherers.

    I'm not surprised. One gentleman in the Ancestral Health movement has a fairly kooky idea about the causes of obesity -- and a pretty minimal and risible historical knowledge. He thinks people who have tasty food available eat too much of it. Really, he does. I'm not making this up. This fellow has also in the past alleged that the use of spices is very modern.

    What! Why does he think the Portuguese were looking for a sea-route to the East back in the late Middle Ages?

    Anyway ... enough of this nonsense.

    It now turns out, what probably few people had suspected, that the use of spices goes right back, a long way before the medieval period, long before Apicius was recording Roman recipes, back, in fact, before the rise agriculture. Here we are:
