  • Um, the *other* Primal Diet?

I somehow ended up discussing diet in another forum, and I mentioned that I follow a modified paleolithic diet, also called primal. Well, my advocacy for meat consumption certainly riled one angry vegan who replied with this lovely quote:
    [quote]

If the Pineapple, Atkins and Cabbage Soup diets seemed extreme, then consider the fanatics worldwide following the latest allegedly detoxifying trend - the Primal Diet, an eating plan consisting of raw meat, eggs and dairy - preferably past their sell-by dates. The diet, the latest to hit Hollywood, was founded by Aajonus (pronounced oj-enus) Vonderplanitz, a 62-year-old nutritionist from California - and it can be only a matter of time before it's endorsed by a twig-thin starlet. The theory is that raw fats bind to the toxins in the body, which are then more readily transported out of the system.

At its most basic level adherents exist on 95 per cent raw meat, including chicken (made more palatable with a marinade of herbs and spices). When they eat out they can rely on culinary classics such as sashimi, steak tartare and beef carpaccio. The remaining 5 per cent is made up with vegetable juices and low-carbohydrate fruits, such as avocados. True aficionados, however, favour “high” meat (so called because of Vonderplanitz's claims that it inspires a natural high), with a small sideorder of rancid unpasteurised yoghurt and fermented vegetables.

“It took me a long time to try high meat because I was scared,” John says. “It does stink like hell and it tastes like an aged raw cheese. The first time I tried it I had to chase it down with a glass of mineral water and I did have a couple of days detoxing, with a bit of diarrhoea. But now my only regret is being squeamish for so long. I used to have all sorts of health problems but now I feel great. I&#39;ve heard of a couple of people with parasites from it, but I&#39;ve been doing it for seven years and I haven&#39;t died yet.” </blockquote>

I have no idea where he got it from as he did not provide a link. I did find a website of Aajonus here: http://www.wewant2live.com/site/811618/page/884188

Has anyone heard of this? I was quite quick to respond that in no way was I espousing stinking, rotten meat consumption.

I&#39;ve heard of raw paleo... and I&#39;ve heard of certain stinky local delicacies... but never a combination of the two!

No offence to the vegan but it sounds like a good "strawman argument" i.e. picking on an extreme, exaggerated version of something and using its flaws to dismiss an argument.

How did the vegan respond to what you *actually* do/eat?

Wow, Shine. That&#39;s some nasty stuff!

They should call it, "The Road-Kill Diet".

I love very rare meat, but rotten? Bleah.

Yeah, I&#39;ve heard of Vonderplanitz&#39;s raw primal diet - it said to have cured him of cancer or something like that.

That&#39;s what he stated in the video. I&#39;m glad he&#39;s better now--- but I&#39;m wondering why he feels his rotten meat really has an advantage over raw, fresh meat.

I must confess, I almost lost it watching that video.

                        wow, that is disgusting.

Eating lots but still hungry? Eat more fat. Mid-day sluggishness? Eat more fat. Feeling depressed or irritable? Eat more fat. People think you've developed an eating disorder? Eat more fat... in front of them.

Wow, I could not even finish watching the video. That is just incredibly revolting.

So the vegan is still claiming that my diet is just a fad diet, similar to a late-night infomercial that is "out to make a buck." Funny, since I have not spent any money on the primal or paleo diet since I started it. Nothing I say will matter unless the validated by the Mayo clinic or Harvard School of Public Health.

*Shrug* I was just irritated that he posted that quote for obvious sensationalism; anyone who had quickly scanned my post would be led to believe that I was condoning rotten meat.

Hah! Shine, just disengage from the conversation with the Vegan! Save yourself some frustration, potentially. It certainly is irritating.

That is a bummer, and an aggressive tactic the poster took. Straw man, indeed! Northern... got that right on the money!

Paleo/Primal is one heck of a fad diet, over 2 million years and running. Some fad! And there is nothing to buy, but food. Not food-like products, just food. The vegan going after you would certainly benefit from eating food, even if only vegetables and fruit!
