    I think they're correct that Ca supps aren't needed....if vitamin D supps are taken.

      I heard this on NPR this morning - was definitely wondering what the Primal community's reaction would be since I know several people take D supplements in amounts several times higher than the upper limit posited by the people who held the panel.         i love all the talk about getting d from sunlight. i live in ohio & work 9-6. the sun doesn't come up until eight, & goes down at five. someone want to explain to me where i can get sunlight from september through april?

        ugh. i upped my d to 8000 a day, & i've never felt better. my SAD has yet to show its ugly face this year, & for that i'm grateful.

          My reaction...there's a grain of truth in this article, but the rest of it is ludicrous.

          The grain of truth: just because levels of 80+ ng/ml can be achieved solely from sunlight by lifeguards in Florida doesn't mean that it's an optimal situation that should be replicated by all of us. It's frankly unpleasant to sit out in the hot sun all day, and I'm sure Grok sat in the shade whenever he could. Science has yet to show that 50-80 ng/ml is better than 30-50. (The Vitamin D council says otherwise, but I'm not convinced by their evidence.) Science has, however, shown that 30-50 is better than 20-30, which is where most people are without supplementation or with the standard 400 IU of supplementation.

          The rest of the committee's report strikes me as a conservative reaction by the establishment. You can tell it's a knee-jerk reaction because their reasoning is dumb: "Oh, no one's getting rickets, so everything's really fine. Anyway, we don't have much research on what the optimal blood levels are, so no one should supplement at all until we know for sure if higher blood levels are better--which we're not going to bother finding out because no one's getting rickets, so everything's really fine."

          I think micromanaging your exact blood levels is counter-productive anyway because there's probably a very wide range for health. If you clearly don't get enough sunlight, and I think we all know whether we do, it's obvious that you need a supplement. Choose the dose based on your lifestyle, your weight, your personal symptoms, and your tolerance for "risking" a higher dose than the establishment thinks you need. Most of us are on this path because we fit the last category. ;-)

              Superb summary. Also I wonder if there's some attempt to make large doses unpopular, preparatory to making them illegal.

              I think I'm in a cynical mood.

                You beat me to this! That was delivered this morning to my inbox via the AAPA (American Academy of Physician Assistants). This report makes me sad because it's what's wrong with medicine in general.

                What about the the 4000 IU upper limit?

                      Oh yes, except for that. OK, rephrase the summary - 'if they need supplements, we'll be able to tell because they get rickets, which can mostly be treated, so everything's really fine.'

                      I wonder if this is another 'This is what we've always said, so we must always say it' case. They've always said you can get all the nutrients you need from a 'balanced diet', so they have to wheel out some people to say it again, to save face. It's a politician thing, isn't it?

                          Actually, Wikileaks is doing banks next, and then the pharmaceutical industry. So it could happpen.

                              I also am curious. I live in northern Canada, and we get very little sunlight all winter...
