Baby if you time travel back far enough you can avoid that work because the dust won't be there. You're too pretty to be working that hard.

My lactation consultant said I could have the occasional glass of red wine while breastfeeding. That is nice. When I'm having a particularly horrid day the half glass will help me chill out a touch. But I'm not entirely sure I agree with drinking while pregnant. That idea still squicks me out.

To be fair, there's a big difference between the odd half glass and a wild night of debauchery

No. They are obviously exactly the same thing. Please call child protection immediately.

I don't think consuming a glass or two of wine while pregnant will be more harmful than stuffing oneself full of grains and sugar.

Official advice remains that women abstain completely during pregnancy.
I so agree with that. No one knows at what level alcohol consumption becomes problematic and if there may be genetic differences in the levels of sensitivity.

It's so not worth the risk.

First trimester: If I even think about having a drink, I'll puke.
Second trimester: Oh, look how civilized a nice glass of wine would be. Too bad I'm pregnant!
Third trimester: God, I need a drink.

We have a good friend who is an Obstetrician. She drank the occasional glass of wine during the 2nd and 3rd trimesters with her 2nd. It was really funny to see her school two gossipy women sitting at a table behind her one day. Especially the look on their faces when she handed her business card to them.

This too could be one of those CW type things.

They do have "test strips" for breast milk to see if there's any trace of alcohol in them. A glass of wine now and then does not get passed to breast milk in detectable amounts. If anyone's in that position and wondering/concerned, I recommend looking in to getting those.

I hate to see women eating garbage while they're pregnant. I have a coworker here that's very pregnant and has gained a ton of weight and a lot of it is not in front. The foods she's eating here are sugary and garbage even by non-primal standards. I would imagine that her baby will be born over weight. Personally I think that eating a healthy (although I'm not even necessarily saying primal) diet with a bit of wine would be a much better start in life.

Yes it does! It's the same concentration in the breast milk as it is in the blood. Over time, that concentration drops just like it does in your blood, so if you have a glass of wine and TWO HOURS LATER you feed the baby, then there's minimal amounts in the blood.

It is a concern if the baby gets the same buzz as the adult because their liver can't metabolize it efficiently so they're stuck with it for longer.

Having said that, I'm totally fine with an occasional social drink during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Just time the breastfeeding one properly! (In pregnancy, the liver issue is moot, because the placenta/mom's liver is doing almost everything--the baby's liver is not processing much.

Oh, and as I said in another thread: I think if you're feeling the need to buy test strips, you're drinking too much!
