If you have food that won't fight back or run away, that you have to just reach and pick up, why bother hunting something ? They most likely hunted more in winters when other food sources were unavailable.

    I think it would come as intuitively to early man as it would to us that a mix of food is best, thus some would hunt, and some would gather.
