  • Brown eggs are brown because they took the "other" route out of the chicken, right?

Stories like that make me realize how disconnected some people are from food. As a chef I once worked with a gal who when offered fresh eggs from our chickens, declined because of the very fact that they were straight from our chicken coop not from a grocery store. Apparently that reminded her that the eggs came out of chickens rather than magically appearing in the refrigerator section to the supermarket. She didn't like to think about where her food came from. This gal had trained at the SF Culinary Institute and grew up rural CA. Where the heck did she think eggs came from?! People like that probably aught to just eat some sort of human engineered "food" substance.
Life is death. We all take turns. It's sacred to eat during our turn and be eaten when our turn is over. RichMahogany.

      • Doing my bench workout, I asked for a 50-ish dude to stand there on my last set just in case. Gave the instructions not to touch the bar at all unless I was clearly being crushed to death.

Him: "How many are you going for?"

Me: "Three at least, I hope."

Him: "Son, you'll never get strong lifting something just three times."

Me: [Looking at the 245 pounds I was benching with a 2-second pause on my chest each rep] "Uh...yeah."

Well food (or the act of consuming it, I guess!) is a psychological experience as much as anything. Can kinda make sense of where she's coming from, but she still sounds pretty crazy for passing up such good eggs!

Ask him to explain robin eggs, or really any other bird egg that has markings on it. There are chickens that lay blue/green eggs. Still taste fine.

            • My mother never was a crazy diet and health food fanatic who never kept chocolate in the house, just carob candy, which I never cared for. My father would buy us real candy sometimes for a treat. If my mother had chocolate, it was always milk chocolate. When I was in my teens she realized that the reason she didn't like dark chocolate was because when she was a kid, she had walked up to a piece of dark chocolate on the pavement, and her father had told her to get away from it because it was "dirty". And so she always associated dark chocolate with filth.

Obviously she was shocked so I grabbed a thing of Kerrygold, threw it in her basket, and told her that when you are eating REAL butter, it's creamy and sweet and lovey and that she'll understand once she switches.

Two hours later I get the following text, "THAT BUTTER IS THE GOLDEN CRACK OF THE UNIVERSE!"

                • [QUOTE=Abyss;1504650]It's a histamine response to a hormone from the mother cow. Clarified butter might be safe but since I get two weeks of discomfort for consuming dairy, I have not yet tried. I believe that it is safe for me to consume goat dairy, but I've only found goat cheese in town so far. The health food store in town is not very large... I'll look into getting some goats butter shipped in if I make an order at a place like US Wellness. Or maybe visit the Asian market.

CW gripe: most of the food shipped in to Juneau follows the SAD! I'm lucky that grass-fed is catching on, but other stuff is still fringe. Good luck getting marrowy bones, for example.[/

Have you checked the Asian market for soup bones?? It's seems they carry a bit of everything.

I believe with chickens there is only the one route.

                          • I finally got my dad to watch the documentary FatHead, I know, there are better ones out there but baby steps, and he liked it which actually got him to listen.

Today, he walked over with two Payday candy bars, his favorite. He tosses me one and asks for help reading the label, peanuts, sugar, corn syrup, non fat milk, palm oil, salt, carrageenan, mono and diglycerides, egg whites, soy protein. I think he was most shocked about the soy protein being a bad thing. Slowly I am chipping away, and the CW soda loving monster that has my dad, slowly.

                            • I love how they use non-FAT milk (aka sugar water), plus sugar, corn syrup (more sugar), palm oil (fat) and mono- and diglycerides (fat), egg whites (because no fat), soy protein (because cheap and subsidized farming).

CaveBug, do you think you could come up with your own PayDay recipe?

                              • they are trying to introduce a star rating system for food in Australia, based on nutritional value...

                                wah wah wah waaaahhhh

Based on eth food pyramid. So a piece of bread 'low fat, low sugar, high fibre' will probably get 5 stars.
