  • If I see another advert for cereal/oats companies holding cholesterol/weightloss challenges I'm going to burn my TV.
I've eaten bacon pretty much every day in the past 3 weeks and lost 2.5" off my waist. I know what I'd rather eat for breakfast.

For real. Bacon every day = 50lbs lost. Oatmeal never did that. Neither did shredded wheat. And bacon tastes a hell of a lot better.

      • I still buy bread for the rest of my family (although I have noticed their bread consumption has spontaneously gone down since I've switched them to mostly primal!).

Emblazoned on the package this week is:From Grains to Glory. As part of their promotion for the Olympics and their sponsorship of the team. Yay for the athletes, but I really disliked the implication that grains will help you win glory.

Then I thought, perhaps I should I view it as "Rags to Riches', and the grains are the pathetic start?

        • Exactly. Many of us have gone from grains to glory!

          • Not funny, just sad... This quote was pulled from an article about McDonald's campaign to start listing foods under 400 calories on their menus.

"A lot of people still think of McDonald's as fast food, and they are doing their part to provide the right items … to create balance and variety," Tristano said. The underlying strategy is to get very health-oriented consumers to recognize McDonald's as a good-for-you restaurant and to go with frequency, he added."

            The article is here:
McDonald's promotes medium fries and Filet-O-Fish as menu items under 400 calories - Chicago Tribune
It makes me sad that people are trying hard to do the right thing but failing because they have the wrong information.
Without question, bacon is the most interesting meat in the world, and if it were capable of original thought, we wouldn't even be having an election this November in America. We would simply appoint bacon as our forever leader and live dutifully under its rule.

Eating at McDonald's already makes me "go with frequency". Oops, that not what they meant, huh?

              • I was listening to the radio yesterday and the announcer was talking about getting protein for cheap/eating healthy after gastric bypass. She recommended skipping things like chicken for "protein rich" grains and beans to save money. Then went on to talk about purchasing protein powder online to save money.

So you basically paid how much money for a surgery that requires you to drink protein shakes. Seriously- skip getting cut up and just eat protein powder.

Or better yet, try paleo or primal.

This month's Muscle & Fitness had an Olympic Profile of one of the male gymnasts who is primal... so basically, all the really good athletes use McDonalds... but only to pay for their Primal!

Who was the athlete please? I love reading about the ones who follow this way of life.

                        • a girl asked me at lunch if I'm following any sort of special diet. I said "yes, Primal, it's similar to the Paleo diet if you've heard of that" and I explained a little bit about not eating grains or processed foods, eating whole foods, lots of good fats, etc. she said "oh yeah, I do that too!" and I got excited for a sec, until she said "it's like, you just eat all gluten-free versions of stuff, right? I bought this great gluten-free pizza and gf muffins! you HAVE to try them"

... no, that's not the same.

                            • The stories of people seeing but totally not realizing reminds me of a story I read somewhere. Not that I believe the story, but its just funny, and makes you think.

Story is that when Columbus's ships pulled up in the new world, that the Native Americans couldn't see them, because they had never seen anything like it, and just couldn't comprehend what in the hell even the idea of a ship. So, essentially, the whole fleet was just invisible.

But one of the older men of the tribe noticed that the breaking of waves and such in the water wasn't right, so he sat on the shore for a couple of days, just staring, because he knew something was there. And then, suddenly, he could see them. And with someone they respected telling them to look, and giving them the description, the rest of the tribe was eventually able to see the ships as well.

Don't remember where I read it, but reading this thread does seem to make it seem plausible.

                              • Someone close to me wanted to start Primal when i did, 13 weeks ago. I bought PB and Paleo books, which i read and shared with her.

She only lasted a few days and then told me she didn't want to buy 'all that food' (but will quite happily buy chocolate, biscuits, bread and low fat yoghurts every night in place of a meal). I really tried at the time to help her and we had some good discussions, however, i think CW was too strong. She's still the same weight and announced to me yesterday that she will be going to the gym every day now in a bid to lose weight. Ahh maaan, makes me wonder if she did actually read the books!
