The food I buy for my girls is about $40 for 12lbs, and it lasts the two of them 2 solid months. $10 per cat per month is really not too bad.
I was thrilled, especially when it passed the taste test! I was starting to see signs of aging in the older cat (the one attached to The Boyfriend), and I'm hoping to reverse or at least slow that down. The other cat, the one that has become more my cat, used to be borderline feral, so I have a feeling she had a few other food sources that were a bit more wild... and probably healthier for her.

    • my guys have been on taste of the wild almost from the start, zero grains at all including rice because one pup is allergic. 13$ with tax per bag bugs the hell out of me but the complete lack of dog farts and smelly poo is worth it
      beautiful
      yeah you are

Baby if you time travel back far enough you can avoid that work because the dust won't be there. You're too pretty to be working that hard.

We just tried the Taste of the Wild Buffalo/venison dog food too for our stinky Rottie. We bought 2 kinds and put them both out to see which one our 4 dogs preferred. 3 out of 4 eat the Taste of the Wild. It beat out the Evo Red Meat Diet brand except the Rottie likes that one best. Bigger pieces. We were buying the Blue Wilderness Chicken but were having trouble finding it in stock. Grain-free costs more but we save on vet bills. I think the Rottie will always be known as "Sir Fartsalot" no matter what he eats!

        • I have a cat that has some skin issues. He has a vet visit in the next month, but I wanted to change his food and see if that makes a difference. He was eating Iams. I bought him Before Grain dry and wet food. He likes the dry but loves the wet. I think I'm going to make the wet food a special treat because he was yelling at me this morning for more.

          • My cat is still living at my parents house until I"m sure I can afford to feed her. She's always been quite fat and I'm curious if a raw diet (or at least grain free) would help with that at all. She's healthy aside from that, and does hunt on her own (though she'd have to stay indoors at my apartment).

Arachidonic acid. Cats need it, dogs don't. Cats also need a more calorie dense food than dogs. Dogs just get fat on cat food, but a cat will eventually sicken and die if fed only dog food.

              • Cats are strict carnivores! Cats should eat ONLY meat. 95% of the packaged stuff is crap, wet or dry!

                • Colleague, in fairly good health and size, trying to loose a few pounds. He partially quit eating candy (I say partially because he went from eating 20 times a day to 10 ) but still eats/drinks lots of processed crap, including "fruit flavored drinks".

Started talking today at lunch that his "fruit flavored drinks" has no added sugar (said so on the label) but still has x grams of sugar on the label. He deducted it's from the fruits in it (couldn't have been, the drink had 1% fruit and smth like 15g of sugar on the label, but I was too lazy to read the rest and see where it came from).

Anyway, another colleague wonders if there are fruits with less sugar content.
Me: Well, sugar content from fruits is not really something you have to worry now, maybe first quit the chocolate chips on your bread with margarine & the full-of-chemicals-drink you have in your hands?! But anyway, if you reaaaly want to know, there are fruits with less sugar, for eg. avocado.
                  Him: Avocado has fat!
                  Me: --- stare ---
                  Him: That's bad for you!
                  Me: ---- stare ---. No it's not!
Him: Yes it is. Fat is very bad for you.
                  Me: No it's not!
                  Him: Yes it is.
                  Me: Eeerm, whatever!

Please note, we were not even talking about fat from meat but fat from f***ing avocado?!

                  • He missed the memo 12 years ago from CW that said that fat from avocado, almonds, and olives is good for you. Even fat-phobic *I* got that memo.

Feeding a cat or dog dry food of ANY kind of quality is like feeding yourself organic grassfed meaty Kix. It's processed food, plain and simple. Am I missing something that indicate otherwise?

                    • Yet another ridiculous chain email from my uncle:

                      WHEN to Drink WATER.
Correct Time to Drink Water....Very Important...
This is interesting!! I knew you need your minimum water to
Flush the toxins out of your body, but this was news to me.

                      From A Cardiac Specialist!
Drinking water at certain time maximizes it's effectiveness on the body
2 glasses of water after waking up - helps activate internal organs
1 glass of water 30 minutes before a meal - helps digestion
1 glass of water before taking a bath - helps lower blood pressure
1 glass of water before going to bed - avoids stroke or heart attack
(Not sure about this one-I would be up going to the bathroom several times)
Please pass this to the people you care about!!!

at work, we have a family friend who comes in and brings pastries from the grocery store. He brought some apple danish coffee cake and I said i'm dieting and no thank you. he was like "but it's low calorie! It has apples!". I look in the box and it's of course sugary coated apples with a flaky pastry with more sugar on top of it. mmmmmmm breakfast of champions! It's low calorie and has APPLES!!!!

i took my bag of bacon out of the fridge and munched that instead, and i feel much better lol

Seconded! I love pets and I honestly do find this discussion informative and fascinating but it should get its own spin-off.

At my work, we have someone--i have no idea who--who will bring in the shittiest of the shitty bread products and leave them in the kitchen for people to share. And its a huge load of them! Like, cheap, flavorless rolls AND crappy trader joes breadsticks AND a bag of white bread. And its not like theyre bringing in leftovers or something; they obviously go OUT OF THEIR WAY to purchase these food items, new, and bring them in, every other week or so. I mean, its frustrating on a carby level of course, but even when I ATE bread I was always flabbergasted, since its bland tasteless bread with no offered toppings or anything, not even peanut butter or margarine.

About a month ago, my mom wanted me to talk to my brother about how it was unhealthy for him to eat so much meat.

Okay, now I positively KNOW you didn't read the book I sent you.
