        • My DD is 6 years old and in 1st grade. A mother of one of her classmates has taken it upon herself to wrangle all the other parents up to supply a daily classroom snack. I've steadfastly remained quiet and didn't participate. I supply DD with her own personal snack (sliced apple with a wedge of cheese and sometimes a square of dark chocolate) because I got tired of all the cupcakes, cookies and other 'healthy' snacks the other parents were bringing in.

Well it's the start of a new year so she's trying to get all the parents to participate again.

Here's a quote from her first email:
Our children return to school on 1/3/2012. This is a short week. I will do the snacks for this week. Are there any volunteers for any weeks in January, February, and March. I would like to schedule volunteers up until spring break.
Please remember that there are 22 students in the class, so each week
you will need 110 snacks and 110 juices. I think it is easier for Ms.
XXXXX if you find items that are indivisually packed. I purchased pop
tarts, cheezits, cookies, snack bags - chips, pretzels, cheese curls
etc., and fruit snacks. As far as beverages I purchased the juice
          boxes. Please remember NO PEANUTS
DH and i just rolled our eyes and didn't reply.

          Today she emailed again

If you did not volunteer for January please email me the date or dates that you can provide snacks for the classroom. If you cannot provide snacks due to financial reasons please email me in confidence and I will make sure a date is covered in your name. MY only concern is the children. Please remember that we would like as healthy as possible snacks and juices. Please refrain from fruit and any snacks high in sugar.
She hurts my head. Refrain from snacks high in sugar but I'll buy poptarts?!? WTF? I was tired of seeing that crap in my inbox so I emailed her to remove me from the list and that we won't be participating. Waiting to see if/how she responds. I was polite in the email.

            • Co-worker 1 to Co-worker 2: "Oh, I learned that if you take more than 600 mg of calcium at a time, you're just wasting your money! You're much better off if you take your 4 calcium tabs spread out throughout the day. And it doesn't matter when you take the vitamin D, it'll help it absorb at any time!"

I swear that I could center this whole thread around the CW nonsense-of-the-day this lady spouts! Again, I refrained from commenting or visibly face-palming....

              Started 7/5/11 at 274 lbs
              Now 214 -- that's 60 lbs!
Goal 160 lbs -- last time there was in junior high!

That is insane! I yelled at my screen at her second email. No fruit?!? Really??? WTF???? She is in serious need of some mental recalibration, most likely achieved through the removal of nefarious wheat.

                  • Talking to a good friend and this is what he said after explaining my paleo diet.

I suspect the reason that people didn't have to contend with obesity, cancer, cardiovascular disease, etc was because they lived a tough hard life, and died before they developed diseases that are common in today's middle age population.
I don't deny that we eat way too many processed foods, particularly carbs. I just don't buy the proposition that the paleo diet kept pre-historic man disease free.

I think I would have copied the nutrition data from soda and then from the poptarts and the rest of the junk she was peddling and asked her which was the "lower in sugar" one that she recommended. And then offer to bring in the soda because it has less sugar than the candy she's peddling.

And then smile and point her to MDA.
