  • Overheard a little thing today, which I got a bit 'writey' with.... here. Also, I was in the car driving to TKD training with a friend (who was wasp-thin at uni but now, some seven years later, is expanding a bit) and somehow the conversation got around to me always going for steak cuts with a slab of fat on the side, and how I always request (and get) the fat from others who are eating steak at the table. My friend said 'Urgh. Eating all that fat... you are going to get fat.' I told him that actually dietary fat doesn't make you fat, it's basically sugar that does that. His response: 'Oh... well, I guess I'm screwed.'

Obviously a desire to change is not big on his list of qualities...

    • My friend and I made plans to go have dinner together tonight... I said something about chicken wings and burgers... she said "I cant. I'm on a diet."

I was like "sucks for you... those things are on my diet"

My advice for stocking up for a rainy day, make a big pot of Primal chicken (or beef, pork, whatever) soup, and freeze individual portions in the freezer. Whenever I make something in the crock-pot, I try to freeze a couple of portions so that I have a few meals saved up for when things get tight.

          • Today at work I decided to have a coffee with cream and I put in one sugar pill (to compliment my freshly made chicken salad and strawberries). My colleague asked if I was allowed "normal" sugar on my "thing". I replied, "if I wanted it" (I no longer bother trying to give comprehensive answers because people give me blank looks). She proceeded to exclaim that I was crazy and having one sugar pill was soooo much worse than having normal sugar. Meanwhile, she's plastering a massive bread roll with a 2cm layer of what looked like cream cheese, following it with a "low carb" protein bar. Lol.

                • My mother had a tumor removed last year. Post-surgery, they bring her to the hospital room and take her off the IV drip, then bring her a 'healthy' meal with 'solid' food. It consisted of one container of low-fat pudding, one container of low-fat jello, and one container of low-fat applesauce.

                  In the HOSPITAL!

                  • In that case, I agree - I think real sugar is better than any kind of artificial sweetener. But that's another thread for another day, I guess!

Here's our funny CW moment for the week. DH had an incident with putting something on a tow hitch and nearly guillotined his fingertip. (Not the funny part.) He didn't go to the ER till the next morning, where the ER doc couldn't believe he hadn't keeled over from pain (it didn't really hurt), & wasn't infected. He Rx'd antibiotics & painkiller, neither of which were needed or used. Friday DH went to a hand specialist who reacted likewise, did surgery, & prescribed more painkiller, not needed or used.

DH is very Grokky & in his exceptional healthy, mystifying the medics.

                    • I'm in Minneapolis for work this week and the supposed best steakhouse in town is touting its "corn fed beef" all over its windows. I get that they have a farm and all, but it just struck me as something funny to post in your windows. Cow: now with even MORE corn!

                        Whole grain potatoes? Really?

                        Comment

                        • Well, it doesn't say potatoes on the can, and they aren't primarily potato. It's just chips that are Pringle-shaped. (I'm not saying that's a good thing, just... saying.)

Here’s the ingredient list: Rice flour, vegetable oil (contains one or more of the following: corn oil, cottonseed oil, soybean oil, and/or sunflower oil), dried potatoes, corn flour, maltodextrin, wheat starch, modified rice starch, sugar, and triglycerol mono-oleate. contains 2% or less of: malted barley flour, wheat bran, dried black beans, salt, and citric acid.

It is deceptive -- I don't see anything in there that I'd even call "whole grain".... rice flour? Everything else is in the less than 2% section. But even if they were totally honest... Yeah uhhh. Pass.

                          • Oh and recent CW conversation with my mom. I let slip that I'm trying to defocus from grains and eating veggies instead, explained that my OB suggested it in order to prevent gestational diabetes.

Mom: "Sounds great, but of course you still need whole grains."
Me: "Why, when I already get the same amount of fiber or more from veggies... which also have tons of vitamins and minerals?"
Mom: "Wh, buh you need whole grains!"
Me: "Okaaay. Well. I'll eat however I need to and I'll listen to my doc, who said this was a great approach. If it helps me avoid diabetes now, it can surely help me avoid diabetes in general."

At least I had the Official Doctor to back me up. But... Siiigh. Maybe later after I have more dramatic results to show off, I can get up the nerve to suggest PB to my heart-disease-and-diabetes Dad...

                            • Multi-grain = more than one grain. Doesn't have to have any whole grains at all. It's a phrase that the grain industry has been using to get people to buy products (counting on the "multigrain" vs. "whole grain" confusion) for years.

                              • Heh, see, I was so easily fooled that I misread it as "whole grain". Marketing win, comprehension fail!

Either way -- it's sketchy to even imagine those ingredients count as multigrain considering it's rice flour, potato (not a grain eh?) and... a tiny percentage of other stuff.
