I LOVED my primal Thanksgiving.. primal Christmas should be delicious too, but maybe more relaxed. Of course, its just my mother, my dd, and me.
My family is all CW freaks, I'm not eating dinner. I won't even bring my own butter. It's just gross what they serve as "food."

    Thanks weight watchers.

    • My mother just had lap band surgery (which is another issue within itself)
Yeah, wow, seriously. I was at the doctor recently and was put in a room that is used by the gastroenterology department as well as general medicine. I saw that they had informational pamphlets on gastric surgeries, so while I waited I picked up one to read it.

Holy. Shit. The whole thing was like reading something out of a body horror story, talking about cutting up the digestive tract, moving things around, redirecting things, taking things OUT. And of course the discussion of the side effects, while trying to paint a positive slant on things, was still chilling. Also there were a lot of colored-pencil sketches trying to show a variety of "normal" seriously obese people talking to doctors and taking walks and things, but somehow these sketches--rather than being reassuringly human--looked scary, overdetailed, and macabre.

I couldnt believe that people read that and still decide to go through with it. I guess it comes down to their doctors telling them that they have to lose weight or die (thats probably true) and that this is the ONLY way that they will be able to do it (Gahhh! No!!)

She's had a tummy bug for the last 2 days and the pain has gone away. This prompted her to think it might be something she's eating. So now she's limiting herself to toast, spreads, veges including potatoes, and commercial yoghurt. No more meat for her, because everyone knows it causes inflammation. This is the woman who bought the Primal Blueprint when she saw how good I was feeling on it, but tried to follow the primal woe while keeping bread. I tried the head*desk, but really I just feel like crying. I tried suggesting bone broth and cutting nightshades, but it didn't make an impression. Sigh.
You might try her on the Wheat Belly book, a lot of the examples are people who stopped having painful arthritis very quickly after only giving up wheat. Obviously, dropping all grains is best, but if she can see some improvement by just switching to gluten-free junk food it could help her move to being more primal.

My mother just had lap band surgery (which is another issue within itself), and my sister just got home for Christmas leave and we were talking nutrition. I told her I wanted to talk to my mom about paleo/primal and try to urge her to focus on good quality food/calories since she can't eat that much.
Sister: "Oh don't worry, she's been eating a lot of vegetarian chili."
          Me: "Huh? Why?"
          Sister: "For the protein".
Me: "Where is there protein in VEGETARIAN chili?"
          Sister: "In the beans."
Me: "Yeah, that doesn't count. Why doesn't she just make it with meat?"
Sister: "She's trying to cut back on fat."
Me: "But fat isn't bad for you."
Sister: "Yeah, we're not having this conversation..."

Facepalm indeed! Not only would eating fat make my mother feel more full, but protein would help minimalize the extensive damage that's going to be caused as her body eats her muscles because it's starving.

First Christmas home and Primal. Going to be frustrating, I can tell already.
According to the only person I know with a band, fatty foods hurt. Also a lot of vegetables can cause pain too. Stupidest surgery ever and I'm sorry your mom is going through that.

          • at lunchy with my mom the other day she was talking about going to a spaghetti place for her ladies dinner with her friends.
she got a vegetarian type pasta because she didn't want any 'heavy meat'
it was hard not to snicker.
if anything, pasta is the heavy part of the meal! esp when paired with meat. but just meat and veg, i feel light as air

            • Co-worker had a colonoscopy yesterday and regaled us with ALL the gory details of the prep, 'waking up' on the table and the totally loopy feeling she had for the entire rest of the day. They didn't find any polyps this time so her crowing comment - deliberately voiced loud enough for me to hear across the room - was;
"Now I know that I just have to keep up with those whole grains and other roughage to keep me cleaned out. They encourage this at the GI center and all of their papers and stuff say that roughage is really good for you!"

~face*palm/desk/wall....but I managed to keep my mouth shut. Sometimes a 60-sumthin person (or GI centers wanting more business) just won't change despite all evidence to the contrary!
              Started 7/5/11 at 274 lbs
              Now 214 -- that's 60 lbs!
Goal 160 lbs -- last time there was in junior high!

Yeah, well all that roughage she's eating didn't keep me out of the ER, but I guess there's something to be said for sheer luck.

I'm just not lucky I guess.

                • Also in the "not funny but heartbreaking" camp, my grandmother is in the hospital due to heart arrythmia. She finally got a tray of food, and while I can understand the lean pork, mashed sweet potatoes, and steamed cauliflower, and I sighed at the sight of the "Smart Balance", skim milk, and non-dairy creamer, I was super annoyed to see that her salad dressing consisted of high fructose corn syrup, soybean oil, and craploads of other things I couldn't pronounce.

But then, being my awesome 90-something grandmother, she did what I expected. She poured it over her salad, took a bite, and made a face. "No," she said, and pushed the salad away.

I told her I'd smuggle in some bottles of olive oil and vinegar if they kept her past tomorrow.

                  • Has anyone seen those commercials where the dogs are complaining about processed dog foods with cute little signs around their necks? Makes me so mad... like "its totally awful to feed your dog MSG and fillers and corn starches....but its perfectly fine for us" I want to make a commercial that has me with a sign around my neck that says Maureen doesn't like monosodiumglutamate.....I cant believe we treat our dogs to stuff that we wouldn't even consider giving to ourselves. Like health.

Now if you really want to blow her mind, make sure to tell her that 2 cups of strawberries have more fiber than 2 cups of oatmeal.

They put fat free on Candy Corn as well. As if that makes a bag of processed and shaped sugar with food die healthy.

I want to scream and pretend i'm a crazy person and snatch it out of her hand and run off. At least i know she wouldn't be able to catch me. FML

Fresh vegetables have plenty of roughage and you probably eat more of them than she does.

                              • I was at the grocery store last weekend and a perky little woman was handing out free samples of eggnog. I was initially happy because eggnog is one of my favorite holiday treats. Just as I was about to take a drink she chirps "and best of all it has no fat and 50% less cholesterol than traditional eggnog!" I replied "then what's the point?" and put the sample back on the tray.
