My bread-and-soda loving mom has been hearing a stream of health messages from my brother and I over the past few months, but I didn't think it was really sinking in. Well, tonight she was telling me how this is "nutrition" week in her kindergarten class, so she's supposed to teach the kids about the food pyramid and appropriate serving sizes. She decided to "rearrange" the old school food pyramid they were using to put fruits and vegetables on the bottom and bumped the grains to the same level as meat. I thought this was pretty cool.
Their school also has a grant now that provides fresh fruit or vegetables for snack in place of the crackers or fruit snacks they used to get. The kindergarteners really enjoy this, and they're exposed to some pretty "exotic" fruits and veggies like mangos and jicama. Most of these kids probably wouldn't get much if any fresh food otherwise, so this is good to see!
