  • Is this IF?

During the week I tend to eat at 6am and 6pm only. Is this sort of like IF?

Lunch is so not worth it. lol

Yes, some people think it's only all at once, but you are "intermittently fasting". I follow a version of that too, basically if I'm hungry I eat, and the rest of the time I'm fasting. I usually only eat once or twice a day myself. It takes a while to digest that food!

What are you guys typically eating during those 2 meals? Are your calories still adding up? How much success have you had from this as far as weightloss goes? Still trying to lose about 15lbs and it seems that even with the lower carbs it isn't happening so I am trying to figure out if there is something else I should try.

I'd say that not eating while feeling evidently hungry qualifies as IF as long as we don't go into starvation mode

Lindsay, I am down to my last 15 - 20 lbs and I find that the ONLY way to kick it is with IF for 8 - 24 hrs, zero alcohol and fasted workouts.

For my cals, I don't worry. I eat until satisfied and only intermittently fast. If I fasted longer than 16 hrs at a time, for several days on end, then I would worry.

Personally, those are the methods that work for me.

My issues are with my brain on the weekends ("I've been good, so I deserve this", yada, yada, yada...psychological crap that I buy into...)

SS, how do we determine we don't go into a starvation mode? Reason I ask, I IF regularly but I want to make sure I'm not going into a starvation mode. My calories are all over the place, sometimes low, sometimes high.

I can't lay my hands on reference I have, but fasting mode starts at somewhere around 14 hours and starvation mode at roughly 2 days. To get the most out of IF you want to sit in the fasting mode for as long as possible.

Eating at 12pm and 6pm is much better than eating at 6pm and 6am if you can do it. This is how the fast 5 diet works.

I agree with Tarlach. I read that 48 hrs = beginning of starvation mode.

I don't know the exact science, but that's what I've read too.

You won't reach starvation mode doing IF, you'll constantly provide nourishment everyday. Personally I don't follow a regimented IF schedule, I just eat when I'm hungry, then "fast" the rest of the time. basically I just think to myself "am I really hungry? or am I just craving something bad? or is it habit?". If I can picture a primal meal and I start to really want it, then I know I'm hungry. If I think of a pizza and really want it, then switch to thinking of chicken or a steak and I'm not hungry, it's a craving/habit.

Tarlach, I agree re: the 12pm and 6pm. My problem is that I work and lunch is inconvenient to pack and then stop and eat. I am able to eat much more thorough meals at home when I have access to my stove, refrigeration, etc.

I find that going a whole 24 hours, while do-able, is not something I can do very well if I have a busy work day with a lot going on. for one, it's sort of embarassing to have my stomach growling all the time. lol

Eating in the morning is just one of those things that I feel best if I do.

We'll see...it's good to think about and ponder this stuff.

I've been IF quite a bit recently and I feel really good from it. I normally do it 2-5x a week but I dont really think about it too much now - just sometimes I really dont fancy breakfast. I have found I've been getting slightly better results if I up the carbs slightly such as adding the odd small sweet potato, making honey and mustard marinade for turkey/pork, or eating berries (I can't seem to get too excited by any other fruit!)...oh and I have a post workout shake with a mix of whey and some carbs (in the form of pineapple and coconut smoothie mmm) and maybe some added cream (seems to make the shake more easily digestible - guess the fat slows it down?).

I've found that if I eat in the morning, I find it much harder to IF until later - so I don't have brekky and can make it through happily to either a late lunch, or make it a 24 hour fast. Not that I've done this in a while. I think I might give myself a kick up the backside and do it tomorrow, as I've been a bit weak-willed of late.

Jamie - I think that counts for an IF, for sure!

just wanted to chime in re: starvation mode. i always laugh when someone tells me if one day my cals are under 1200 then my body auto kicks into "starvation" i just smile and laugh. some people never learn! seriously i'm 5'4 115, i'm not rotting away nor is one day going under or at maintenance sending my body signals into a downward spiral. gotta love CW
