That's right. My grandma used to feed oats to pigs and lamb to fatten up few months before slaughter.

Mark's suggestions for oats can be found in this blog entry:

I couldn't find anything specific about oats in my search of the archives. But oats are a grain, and I don't think any better than any other grains--maybe just revisit: http://www.marksdailyapple.com/definitive-guide-grains/

But there was a post for oat-free oatmeal if you really wants some, not long ago.

Here's a link where Mark talks about them as an occasional indulgence. It's over a year old so maybe his position has changed since then.

Oats are a terrible trigger food for me - I can't have them in the house. I've been known to destroy boxes of muesli and granola, not to mention flapjacks. They may not be as bad as wheat but for me, personally, they're a disaster.

Oats are often contaminated with gluten since they are usually processed on the same lines as wheat and other grains. Since I am gluten-intolerant, I often react to oats in the same way as wheat, so the contamination must be significant. There are gluten-free oats (processed on separate lines) but who needs any grains anyway?
