  • PB friendly snacks for kids (or kid's at heart)



    Some simple, inexpensive and most importantly primal friendly snack suggestions (for kids and kids at heart).


    Ants on a Log:


    • Celery

    • Nut butter

    • Raisins


    Wash celery, spread nut butter inside the ribs of the celery, top with raisins. Sunflower seed "aphids" can be substituted for raisin ants.


    Deviled (Green) Eyeballs


    • Hard boiled eggs

    • Mayonnaise

    • Mustard

    • Olives, (preferably black) whole or sliced

    • Optional: blue food coloring


    Peel and cut hard boiled eggs lengthwise. Scoop out yolks and mix with mayo, mustard, and blue food coloring to make a green paste. Dollop mixture back into egg whites and top with black olives.


    Chunky Monkey


    • Banana

    • Nut butter

    • Chopped nuts


    Peel banana and place on plate. Spread nut butter to coat the top and sides of banana. Sprinkle chopped nuts over the nut butter coating. Enjoy with a fork.

      Stuff that gets requested a lot around here:


      banana 'ice cream' - frozen banana blended with some hemp seed or nuts or nut butter and a little cream.


      munchie plate - sausage slices, veggies, nuts


      almond butter on a spoon (great for when he is hungry and whiney and needs a few calories in him before supper is ready)


      smoothie popsicles (make your favorite smoothie with lots of fat hidden in it and freeze in popsicle molds)

          This looks like a good snack from Primal Blog:


          Pumpkin seeds

          Sunflower seeds

          Sesame seeds

          Chopped nuts (not too many)


          Be sure the seeds have all been roasted to make them a bit crisp.


          Mix them in whatever proportion you like

          (I put about 1 ½ cups pumpkin seeds,

          ~1 cup sunflower seeds,

          a fistful of sesame seeds


          In a sauté pan, melt butter and coconut oil in equal amounts (quantity? enough to coat the seeds once you put them in). Pour in seeds, being sure they are coated with FAT. Pour back into the bowl and salt right away so it will stick while fat is still warm.


          Then put it all in a container with tight lid, and SHAKE to mix


          Eat as a snack, savor and ENJOY!!!

            After reading the suggestions for nut butter and bananas I tried them last night.


            Almond butter and bananas = Awesome!

              I luuuv banana coated in almond butter. The only thing better is to sprinkle crushed walnuts on top. I am going to have to try that "banana ice cream" idea. I have always wanted to find a tasty treat that incorporated frozen bananas and that sounds like just the ticket.


              Another idea that I tried today and loved (more for grown-up tastes):


              sliced apples dusted in unsweetened cocoa powder and then scooped into nut butter. The bitterness of the cocoa powder is balanced nicely with the sweetness of the apple and provides a wonderful chocolaty redolence and flavor. Combine with unctuous nut butter and you have one delectable treat.

                Also possible to do shredded/flaked coconut instead of raisins for the "Ants on a Log." Though I suppose you'd have to call it "Termites on a Log" or "Moths on a Log."

                  Chocolate pudding:

                  2 small ripe avocados

                  1/2-3/4 cup blue agave nectar (or whatever sweetener)

                  1/4 cup raw cacao powder

                  2 tablespoons coconut cream, concentrate

                  1 tablespoon alcohol-free vanilla

                  1 dash sea salt

                  1 dash cinnamon (optional)


                  -Place everything in a high-power blender or food processor and blend on high until very smooth. You may need your temper /spoon to move the contents a little so the motor doesn't bog down on you.

                  -Keep stored in an air-tight container in the fridge if not eating right now.

                  Chocolate Pudding

                  2 tablespoons cacao powder

                  1 1/2 avocados

                  1/2 vanilla bean

                  1/4 cup flax seed oil

                  5 dates

                  3/4 cup water

                  1 tablespoon raw honey

                  1/4 teaspoon celtic sea salt


                  Put everything in a blender and blend until smooth.


                  Personally, I love coconut water - from a young coconut. They can be tricky to cut though! Just make sure they're ice cold, it's very delicious.


                  Raw Applesauce (so it retains all its vitamins!)

                  •3 large apples

                  •2/3 cup water

                  •1/3 cup dried apricots or other fruit OR 5-6 large dates


                  Preparation:

                  - Place the dates or dried fruit in a small bowl and cover with the water. Allow to soak for at least 15-20 minutes. This will soften the fruit and make it easier to blend.

                  - Remove the core from the apples, chop into several large chunks each and place in blender or food processor. Add the fruit and the water and puree until smooth, adding a bit more water if needed.

                  - Garnish with a bit of freshly ground cinnamon if desired.

                    Sub dried cherries for raisins as your "ants".

                    Carrot (sticks) & nut butter.

                    Frozen fruit mix warmed & mixed with nut butter, chopped nuts, coconut, cinnamon... be creative.

                    (that's more of a sit-down dessert type option)


                    I need some suggestions for my friend's 2yr old with tons of allergies (nuts, eggs for starters). If I can get them more PB-ish, will those allergies dissappate?

                    (I know my brother & sister outgrew theirs)

                      @jpippenger, try frozen banana chunks covered with Almond butter and then rolled in crushed nuts - very kid-friendly and primal too.

                        How about making your own jerky? My kids could eat jerky all day long....

                          I always enjoy cutting a banana in half the long way, and putting the two halves together so they're "spooning". I then cover bothe halves with a mixture of almond butter, honey, and cinnamon. It's pretty awesome, and my favorite "meal" before a workout.
