    Try this rendered pork fat if you live near a German market or deli. It includes the little brown bits of fat (the "Grieben") remaining from the rendering, and is seasoned with onion, thyme and marjoram.

    Delicious on boiled veg, lean meats etc etc.

      @ CavemanJoe, I live in California, and have only done a minimal amount of shopping in Germany. Any reputable Metzgerei should be fine. Not sure if it is a regional specialty or not.

        Easy enough to make. My (German) husband has made it for years: render some duck or goose fat, fry up a bunch of bacon, crush the bacon into little bits, fry up some small chopped onions, mix with duck/goose fat with salt and pepper.
        It is incredibly good stuff...
